OK I gigged the GK 210RBH on Saturday and it was awesomely powerful at the gig - loads of oomph and it was all clean. Amazing. However I started missing midrange towards the end of the gig, not sure whether that was me or the amp. I'll have to rehearse with it just to be sure it wasn't something to do with the positioning of the cab (it was stacked for the gig but I've had better results with the combo when its been angled). It might also be that the cab needs breaking in a little. The other was an EBS 212 Neo from Loudandclear. I have to admit I was absolutely astounded by the weight (or lack of) of this thing. Truly incredible. Yet the sound is very full if a little sizzly coz of the tweeter. The Trace V8 has taken on a new lease of life with this cab so I'm looking forward to trying it out! I may end up looking for a matching EBS 210 neo and then just taking the GK RB700 head out of the combo and switching between that and the Trace V8 depending on what basses are needed for the gig.
Yeah man, the F Bass is staying put, although, getting the amp hadn't persuaded me to do that, i'd already realised letting it go would be a cardinal sin!!!
Mission accomplished then
However, if i cam across a nice P bass with a J pup in, i may be tempted...but my monies going to be waiting for a nice old Fender
Well, how about an old Fender with a p/j pickup combination? They do come up on fleabay and because they've been buggered about with, the prices are often quite reasonable - even for gigging instruments. Plus you won't have to be too precious about keeping it in good condition, in fact the occasional extra ding would probably just add to its mojo.
Did you end up with Flanker's Celindar P Bass as well as the 4 string Update?
Yeah, I've got both of Flankers 4 stringed Celinders plus the Stingray which gives me a full house as far as funky 70's bass sounds go. I never expected to use the Celinder Update P as much as I do but it completely nails the sounds on so many 70's soul, disco and funk covers. The Update J doesn't really get a look in at the moment.

I've pretty much got all the basses I've ever gassed for. Having said that, there is the Shuker MIDI 6 being made and I wish I didn't need to take 3 basses to a gig to cover all the different bass tones. So if there was a 5 string bass which could do a MM Stingray and a p-bass sound, that would be good... I do admit to having a weakness for well made English valve bass amps though.
Hi Steve, I still have the white Metro (so glad I didn't sell it) and to be honest there isn't much between them at all which is what I expected as Roger Sadowsky says that the Metros are as good as the NYC basses if you don't want any special features.

For gods sake don't let me near your Celinders as I have heard great things about them. Oh no is it GAS?!?... EDIT: Just a point regarding my opinion of Sadowsky basses for anyone who is interested and has heard one or played one and doesn't get what all the fuss is about. When you play them solo they sound good but I have heard nicer sounding tones on other high end basses depending on what you like. Where they excel is on recordings and live. They really cut through the mix so well and have great defined low end with sizzling highs. Steve
Well all credit to Roger for not trying to hype his US made basses out of the stratosphere. The Celinders are great for 70's bass sounds, I can't fault them on that front - great recording workhorses. But not too aggressive in the midrange - that's where I think Sadowskies have the edge as a live instrument.
-
lovely looking axe mate how does it compare to the white metro you had a while back? I thought that was a pretty sweet instrument.

So mate, the ampeg was a good call and we've persuaded you away from selling the F-bass, yeh?

Are some Basschat Topics & posts getting out of hand?
Kiwi replied to silverfoxnik's topic in General Discussion
I think its great that the membership is taking an active role in generating some genuine consensus over what is acceptable conduct. However, if the consequence of the membership taking more of a steer is that there's more open conflict on the forum then I still see there being a need for moderation. I have no problem whatsoever with responsible members taking responsibility for their own behaviour on the forum, in fact I applaud it. Regrettably however, its a fact of life that not everyone who contributes to Basschat is prepared to take on responsibility for the impact of their behaviour on other members. In fact I'm fairly sure that this is almost unavoidable with any forum that has a membership from a diverse range of backgrounds and cultures. However, to put some perspective on matters, I think members who have a more casual interest in the forum are likely to be put off by open conflict. Regardless of any political interests as far as freedom of speech is concerned, I think this is why there is a need for moderators. They have a thankless task sometimes and often do the dirty work of taking matters up with individuals to avoid the risk of open conflict. This makes the forum much less odious. to use -
I did a double take when I first saw him as he looked like someone who I thought I should know but couldn't put a name to the face.
Hello, did anyone else see Friday Night with Jonathon Ross? They had a few musicians on and they did the number "Oh My God" by the Kaiser Chiefs. What intrigued me was at first glance it looked like the bass player (not the regular Kaiser chiefs player) was playing an old fender precision bass that appeared to have a chunk missing from the headstock, so I thought perhaps it was a custom made bass with a quirky styled headstock, but at closer glance it looked like the logo of the bass had been covered up with a strip of black tape. I wonder why he would do this, any suggestions?
I saw that too. Maybe he doesn't want Fender taking a pic of him and saying he uses Fenders? Maybe he has another endorsement deal? Could be a load of reasons.

Now THIS is what a Precision should sound like..

Heh, my Celinder P bass just sounds like that, must get some sound clips up some time. -
Hey Steve, moving on nicely then, by the sounds of things? Can't wait to see the first pics of the body and neck!
Me too, it'll be really happening then!
-
Update: Neck is going to be glued up this week and left to settle over the Christmas period. Jon reckons the Wittman tuner suggested by Skelf is a great idea and it isn't going to suck much additional power so he can run it off the same battery for the turquoise LED's. We've agreed that the tuner will be located in the side of the top horn too. It's going to be interesting to see how much space is taken up in the chambered body by all this kit!

I don't know about in the last few months but you used to find Mesa Boogie Bass 400+ heads for about £6-700 on Ebay occasionally before they announced the production run would be finishing. Really great amp, the one I had was very reliable (and very heavy!). After a couple of Basschat owners, I think Tayste has it now. Mesa Boogie also made a much less popular Buster 200 wedge combo which might actually prove to be better value. There is a Trace Elliot V6 for sale in the Basschat Market Place as well which was around that price range and that would be well worth looking into. Just make sure you check the output valves out before you buy on any valve amp, complete replacement of a set can be expensive. I had a look at a Trace V4 combo like Ped's a couple of weeks ago after the guy tried selling it on Ebay. Half the output valves were dead and the other half were on their way out. I walked away from it, but it was a bloody nice amp. I can see why Ped likes his so much. Caveat: I don't like grindy sounding valve amps.

Whats your one bass that you couldn't live without
Kiwi replied to birdy's topic in General Discussion
I can't answer this. The prospect of losing them all but one fills me with morbid dread. I would be chucking as many of them out of the window as I could in their cases and hoping the cases could absorb the impact. And don't even get me thinking about how I'd deal with the valve amps... -
LOL So what did you study and would you recommend the course to others? Has the qualification proved useful?

Hi Dave, welcome aboard. Do you have any interesting stories from your time at BIT?
+1 to graphite reinforcement. Not for nothing are many slim necks so strengthened. As for fretboards; Ebony. Or a Phenolic/ Ebanol item.
Even a particularly dense and stiff piece of rock maple would probably do the trick.

How may Basses do we own collectively on Basschat?

You could get a new fingerboard put on it. Get the luthier to install graphite stiffening rods and ask him to make sure the fingerboard is from something very dense and stiff.
I don't know, so I guess that's a 'no'. I shall follow it up though. Ta, la. Dan
If its blue and red, its a Mk1, if its silver and black then its a Mk2. Mk1's need a replacement ROM, whereas Mk2's can be updated by flashing the firmware. I know there were issues with the Mk2 creating staccato notes which was fixed with a firmware update.

I have tried the Burmans and the Acmes together. The Acmes make the Burmans sound like they're putting 25w each!
