1. Larry nails this topic on the one. Great demo, he's an awesome groove player. Its all about balance.
  2.
I've been having a bit of an 80s flashback of late and have found myself lusting after a Status again. Bloody GAS! I can't help it, it's the graphite. There's only really one I've got eyes for and that's an all-graphite Series 2000, preferably in that greeny/grey tint. Anyone got one? Any good? Am I out of my mind? Going for a lie down now...
I've sort of lusted after one on and off as I love the feel and playability of graphite. The only thing stopping me from buying one was that there was absolutely no demand for that kind of sound in any of the music I played. Its got a particularly distinctive tone which probably hasn't dated that well. I sold my long cherished Jaydee Mark King for pretty much the same reasons.
  3.
I think I'm just on a bit of a downer about by my whole situation really. Never mind, hope to snap out of it soon.
Hey, you're in the right place at least.
  4.
I do have obligations to the rest of the band and I believe I fulfil them but that's not why I play. I get pleasure playing to audiences
Hmmm. OK, I have to admit to having a similar issue myself with bass. I've done pretty much all I feel inspired to do with the instrument. I still get a lot of satisfaction out of my playing experiences and hearing the bass fit perfectly into the mix but that revolves mainly around the team work aspect and being part of something that is bigger than each of the component parts. I'm not interested in being able to widdle Flight of the Bumblebee or whatever. I had a crack at trying to emulate John Patitucci but I lack the self discipline and inspiration to sustain technique at that level anyway. My work life is too stressful for me to sit down and focus patiently on a complicated piece of music and I marvel at some of the stuff I see being played by everyone at the Bass bashes. I can't see how a lot of advanced technique fits into funk and soul genres I play though. The person who has come closest to inspiring me with technique is probably Michael Manring, he never seems to lose sight of the music and I reckon Billy Sheenan is pretty good too. But I am absolutely not interested in sounding like either of them. Thats why I'm interested in your situation. Seeing Prince play live really fired me up and diversifying musically and taking up funk guitar has given my interest in performing music a new lease of life, but I see you've already done that as well. What about playing drums?
  5. Kiwi

    Ive got my 9

Yeah, lets see/hear some clips of you playing that thing
  6.
I would Steve, I love playing live and TBH, it's the only reason I play an instrument but it isn't what it used to be. I just know if I'm not in a band doing gigs, I'd never pick a bass up again. I sometimes wonder if my constant equipment changes are really my way of sustaining interest.
Man, thats a sad situation. Are you saying you're only playing bass out of a sense of obligation to the band? Is there something now uninspiring about making loud low and powerful noises, in the pocket? (Now I just KNOW I'm going to regret saying that...)
  7. anyone got a shot of them wearing a pork pie hat?
  8.
I think that was probably the best choice you could have made dude, great rig.
+1 *applauds* Shame about the band tho. Wouldn't you miss it?
  9.
Sorry Steve, but no..there isnt any 'telling' in me posting publicly,or uninforming anyone,of anything, mods or otherwise...it was simply a thread, with a question....that was open......to the people...for they're opinion, with a poll added later,If there was a problem,it could have been shut that morning later, but it was not,and the 'mods' seemed to run with it..... regardless of yay or nay they didnt seem or the publicBasspersons either to have a beef. I felt, and still feel its a better more open way of discussing things, rather than a few saying 'What WE say goes' (I know its not like that,it isnt REALLY like that here, but I use that as an example) on such a fringe, left field subject..hey I can just ask,but I want to ask everyone... I never saw a protocol on this site,or anything.......,as long as no-ones posting kiddy porn,or whatever, posting something seems ok,I dont see the problem. Or attention seeking,by having and enjoying the support for what I would really love to see, that being a seperate subthreadetcetcetc. To unquote John,It seemed to be a reasonable question. The way it was presented was democratic and fair, and without any political subtext (why would I want to run something, that runs well, but needs tweaking?) No ones gonna hate my playing today,or tomorrow...they may by feb 08 when I use the ERB onstage, but jealousy is another sin,I left far behind. and at that last word,I say thankyou for your time, forgive my kneejerk reaction. I play Bass,I make good Stir fry,I sing in tune.
Meh. Regardless of whether you're ignorant of the policies (which are there), if you want some input into how the forum is managed then it stands to reason that the most effective way to do that is to work with the management. If you choose not to cooperate with us then you're not going to make as much progress, are you? Common sense really, innit?
  10. Wasn't a thin neck one of the specific requests of Chris Squire? Do you think you've made much on the deal? Nice score, Sir if you did!
  11. That bass sounds pretty sweet - even nicer than my own Smiths in some respects. The single coils are a little thinner sounding but there's some lovely upper midrange growl and clarity.
  12.
Because then everyone will hate him
Well we can't have that. He probably just wants to be loved. Like Nellie.
  13.
Look,Im getting Pm'd about this ...people. I will be probably banned for this...
Ohh FFS ARGH, it should have been pretty bloody obvious from my PM that you're nowhere even close to getting banned, so get a grip and don't be such a drama queen. We have made it clear in the past that there are specific ways in which we will entertain suggestions. I think its very telling that you chose NOT to involve either Ped, myself or one of the mods before deciding to post publically about it. Hardly a good example of working together is it? If you want to attract attention to yourself, how about doing it positively by posting some clips of you playing?
  14.
I'm in Oxford and I always find them to be professional, friendly blokes. Rumour has it that one of the shop assistants is the son of Mark King too...
At risk of appearing like a total L42 geek, is that likely to be Darcy?
  15.
I'll bet a month's cider budget that Stuart C can!
Its possible to do it double thumbing, but it doesn't sound the same as 'chucking' it like 'Nard did. Keep a pack of plasters nearby, you'll probably need them... ...or just use a pick like any sane person would For me: Eyes Waterfalling - Level 42 plus anything by John Patitucci Jaco (apart from Portrait of Tracey) Victor Wooten and pretty much any other modern day Bass God. I have enough fun trying to copy Bernards feel on I Want Your Love - man, in a band setting that is one TOUGH song to play with the same relaxed precision and yet still mix it up like he does. He doesn't play the same riff twice through a verse but still stays right there in the pocket despite injecting subtle twists into the groove. Its playing like that which I tend to find inspiration these days rather than lots of fancy fingerwork. Just means I'm crap at showing off though. Can't solo to save myself.
  16. Some quality advice here and a good range of opinions and experiences. Nice thread Might be worth making it a non-wiki sticky?
  17. A simple demand for the public to see, & to those in charge of Basschat
Seemed a reasonable question to ask.
Hmmm. ARGH in the future if you have an idea, and you would like "those in charge of Basschat" to offer their full support, its probably a good idea to discuss it with them.
  18.
I accept clear defeat....
Oh I wouldn't say defeat necessarily. You've attracted a lot of attention to yourself, as usual.
  19. I've already used Mike on one of my gigs and he's brilliant. Knew the songs better than the rest of the band!
  20. I've owned all three types of neck. I think the construction processes do cause instruments to respond differently. But those differences can be ironed out to some extent depending on what materials are selected and how stiff the necks are. I've found that bolt on necked basses often do tend to have slightly more sharply peaked mids, but the same effect could probably be achieved through selective used of a mid prominent wood like wenge in a through body neck. Ultimately I don't think neck construction type could be used as a reliable indicator of what an instrument could sound like, by itself. Having only ever owned and played one bass with a glued in neck, I can't really comment but it felt a lot like a neck through to me.
  21.
Before I vote, I really must insist on another poll question: "What is the minimum number of strings for an ERB?" You could call a 5-string ERB if you wanted to - it has an extra string, after all... but for me, a 7 is quite normal... so where do we draw the line? I'm pretty much in favour of the forum, but not if we're going to be all vague about it...
I think that probably underlines the point I made earlier about dividing the community.
  22.
Its home and I've hardly put it down. I told Jon I wanted something that sounded like my 78 P bass but played like my stingray. Well so far it sounds as good if not better than The P Bass, Its got the extra Jazz PU to give me a bit more flexility and it plays fantastic! Way better than the stingray. It even slaps better (not that I undulge in much slapping - just Areoplane in guitar shops ) I've only tried it on my practice amp at the moment. Can't wait to unleash it on the Ashown rig in the week  Compared to the P Bass, its as light as a feather too.
Nice result
  23.
Personally i don't want Basschat to get like Talkbass or Dudepit where there so many different forums it just looks and feels messy. I mean, if we assume that ERB is 7+ (when i was playing 6's i didn't wanna talk about 6 string bass, i wanted to talk about bass), theres gotta be maybe 5 or so people with those instruments, then we'll need a forum for stick players, then one for 5 string upright players, it just gets a bit silly. Si
I tend agree with Sibob that we DO have quite a lot of forums at the moment. I'm comfortable with the number we have as they're all well used. I would be a little reluctant to start making distinctions between types of basses because it would divide the community rather than encourage its integrity.
  24.
Good Times-Chic Everybody needs somebody-Blues Brothers
+1 Pretty much anything that charted by Chic is a sure fire winner. Same for any soul numbers that appeared on the Blues Bros too. Whoever selected the songs for that movie really knew their zeitgeist.
  25. Welcome Paul. I'm guessing not everyone in Lowestoft likes The Darkness then?
