Ah my favourite topic! Check out these fantastic bass/amp combinations some time: Jazz + SWR SM400 + Goliath 4x10 - v crisp and deep Stingray + Boogie 400+ + 4x12 - loads of chest thump P-bass + Ampeg + 8x10 - round and brown Smith BSR5 + GK 1x15" combo + 2x10 cab - very even, growly and full (sounded good thru Rich's Eden WT400 but not so good through my WT800) Status Series 2000/Stealth + Hartke 3500 + Hartke 4x10 (or same as a Trace rig)- loadsa growwwwl Any other fave combinations out there?

Sounds to me like your music had precisely the RIGHT effect, if he had to leave after 10mins and all the punters who were having fun stayed. What's to be bothered about? One less tosspot in the audience is a GOOD thing.

I'd ask Gene Simmons whether he'd sell his grandmothers remains if someone offered enough money.

I can tell you from my experience presenting to large rooms of people professionally, as well as the usual gigging, that nerves are VERY much a state of mind. There are some things you can do to help increase your confidence and the most important is PREPARATION. Simply put, its not possible to over prepare for something. Secondly, it does get easier with experience (especially, as has already been mentioned, when you start to understand what the audience DON'T hear). Thirdly even if I still have nerves then I find it helps to at least act like someone who is confident even if I'm not. That means taking some time out to put yourself in the shoes of someone who is relaxed and confident and visualising how you want to come across, so that you get the audience reaction you're after. Again, that gets easier with experience. At the end of the day, smell the fear. Then do it anyway.

I started on drums when I was 12 then switched to bass at 14. I can still give the drums a decent wallop but I'm not too steady these days. This year I decided that I'd done everything that I could realistically do on bass and so decided to diversify. It was a great decision and I've decided to start by learning 'funk guitar' so its lots of minor 6, minor 7 and 11th chords for me! I got a beat up Custom Chandler Strat, cheap korean made Ibanez copy with a walnut facing (which is for sale for £80) and I'm looking for a 1x12 valve combo (preferably a Burman) to go with my Lexicon MPX-G2. I'm really happy with that set up when I've used my Burman heads. I've also got a rack of synths including: EMU Virtuoso EMU Vintage Keys Pro EMU Vintage Keys Classic (for sale but not listed yet) Yamaha CS6R MIDIMAN 24 channel rackmounted mixer and Yamaha HS50 monitors Roland PC200 keyboard controller which I need to upgrade as it doesn't have enough keys. I'm looking for an Axon AX100 pitch to midi convertor for the Shuker midi bass I'm about to commission, which will be on its way hopefully before Christmas. Last thing will be to get a Roland or Yamaha electronic drum kit but I don't have enough room for it at the moment until I buy a 2 brm flat.

Ladies! Life's too short, please lets keep things positive ok? There's a lovely feature on this forum called an ignore list. Go to your PM messenger inbox, fourth menu down on the left called Options. You'll see a link called 'Manage Ignored Users'. It works brilliantly - you can even use it on the mods, although that's probably not a good idea if you like undermining sales ads or arguing over grammar.

The best speaker combination I've ever tried is 2x10 and 1x15. Regrettably, I've found every Epi cab I've tried to be way too boomy, but very warm and crisp nevertheless. Nothing's managed to persuade me away from GK yet though. They're very articulate, with good warmth without sounding boomy. Adding a 2x10 to my 1x15 combo adds oodles of crispness and punchy midrange meaning I can pitch myself easily when playing fretless. I had that set up going at rehearsal on Sunday, I looked at the amp as I was playing and thought, for the first time ever in my life, that there wasn't a bloody thing I could do to make it sound better. The only hitch was that the amp was looking for an 8ohm load and I'd given it a 4ohm 2x10 load instead so it was seeing a total load of something like 2.67777ohms (ouch). Too bad they don't make Acme cabs with a linking jack, eh? Otherwise... ...oof!

For example, if the youtube clip of the MM playing really gets you off, then why not get a used Fender Jazz? (Watch the pickup spacing on the jap made MM isn't the same as the 70's basses though, but the Geddy Lee Jazz is). Hearing the sound you like will give you pleasure and satisfaction, helping you to stay motivated. OK, so its not going to a do-all bass but it's still going to give you an broad range of sounds to play with from p-bass-ish all the way to Jaco's fruity parping via Marcus. Thats pretty damn good for one instrument and I think there's a lot of common sense in going with a jazz as a only bass.

As I mentioned earlier, drop us a PM with specifics on where there's inconsistency if it's a real concern for you, and we can discuss things in more detail.
