Don't Stop Til You Get Enough - Jackson 5 Loads of lovely fills that you can stretch out on and a groove that tests anyone's ability to play behind the beat. There are quite a few Stevie Wonder songs that have lovely unison fills too - Do I Do, Superstition, Master Blaster etc. Very satisfying to play.
BBNE2 is reasonably priced... apart from in the UK. I remember I bought one brand new at £1150 off the Yamaha rep when they were about £1800. Just look at them now
At one point they were available to the UK from a Japanese retailer for about £1400. They're priced pretty steeply in Europe too.
Yamaha basses have been solidly good for as long as I have been playing. Having said that, pretty much everything made by them from instruments to motorbikes and everything in between are spot on.
They're my pick too - very solid and dependable instruments, always reasonably priced (apart from the BBNEII).

Wow...is Sharay playing London...? -
Wals are lovely but have you tried these yet? Pedulla Pentabuzz (loads of sustain with lots of bright mwah) Ashbory bass (Rubbery sound a little like an upright and very even response) Godin Acoustibass (light weight and very resonant) NS Wav upright (long scale add huge depth and bloom to the notes) All of them are standard setting fretless instruments in their own way.

£500 raised for charity too, which is outstanding. Thank you Nik and Colin. -
Does this mean you have an infestation of basses?
-
Yeah, but all I'm saying is that this was the prevailing opinion after the novelty wore off. IIRC 1212L's were pretty popular back then and the other models may not have been given the same consideration. Lozz mentioned prominent mids during the summary so it seems the tide might be turning - mid hump or not.
-
When Schroeders were new and trendy (about 2007/8), they eventually fell out of favour because they had a mid hump. If today's shoot out is any indication, the mid hump seems to be seen as something positive again. Just goes to show that just because something is technically efficient and well engineered doesn't mean it sounds better than less efficient cabs. BTW, I got the name of my cabs wrong. fEARfuls are the cabs available on plan, fEARless are the cabs I brought. Sorry for that but I'm pleased they got such a positive reaction from everyone. If anyone is considering a fEARless purchase, the builder is Tricky Audio in Kent. Drop the owner Guy Trigg an email, his email is . I love these basses - very warm and light, growl if you need it too. The fretlesses are my second fave behind the Pedulla Pentabuzz.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252013671392?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&var=550875728494&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT I used these strips but in longer lengths to decorate the soffit in my lounge and dining room but the power adapter was a little bulkier as the strips fed off 240v mains, could change colour and flash with a remote control. The strip connectors were not very successful and I ended up soldering the connections directly. Gluing tinfoil alongside the strips can provide additional reflectivity.

Peavey Classic 50 head - stunning value for money compared to Fender and chronically under appreciated. Nile Rodgers has a pair given to him by SRV back in the Lets Dance days. http://www.ebay.co.u...=item4d389a1513 I like my Burman a lot but it doesn't do doom metal either It does some nice crunch but needs an attenuator and high gain 12AX7's to get the best dirt.
For bass, I'm looking for clean headroom. My Hiwatt 200w valve amp, with 4 x KT88s, does this. A less powerful valve amp, or most guitar valve amps, won't do this (I tried a Peavey guitar head once; I'll not do that again...). To get clean valve headroom, a couple of EL84s won't do it, so what works for an AC30 doesn't work for bass, or at least, the clean tone I want from an amp. SS amps can do the job, but only if we 'up' the power rating, and thus more expensive cabs able to handle the watts. Typically, a guitarist will be looking, in an all-valve amp, to 'bend' the o/p stage valves. For bass, I don't want this at all. The price to pay is big bottles, with big transformers, which means heavy and expensive. So be it. I could have chosen to play the harmonica. Subject to completion, correction and/or contradiction from others.
This. Bass is power. Powerful valve amps are heavy and expensive because valves are not efficient, (and as already stated) there's low demand and they're expensive to mass produce for that demand. 100-200w amps are around and reasonable cost. Think Fender Bassman (135w), Mesa Boogie Buster combo (200w), Marshall Superbass (100w), Matamp if you can find them, Soundcity heads (120-200w). Above that, Mesa Boogie Bass 400+ heads are fantastic and can be had for between £600-1000 depending on whether you import from the US or not. Otherwise you won't get much change from £1200. Besides which, unless someone is playing large venues, the low end from valve heads tends to be overwhelming for small venues...in my experience at least.
hey Kiwi, space still available by any chance? I live in Walthamstow, but could get to anywhere in SE London, am only taking one gigbag with me. Just googled public transport and it doesn't look good :/
You're looking at three hours total journey time from Walthamstow if I take you but spacewise, it shouldn't be a problem. It'll take you 1.5 hours to get to somewhere near where I am and the drive there will be another 1.5 hours. I'm leaving to collect another chatter from Horn Park around 10:30am and we're aiming to arrive shortly after 12. -

Anyone need a lift from SE London? I'll have some spare capacity. -
Gibson 335 or something similar - just so funky and sweet sounding. Would happily swap an MSG for one.
Meh, I've given in and commissioned a replica of Nile Rodgers' Hitmaker. Yammie MSG will be available to play at the SE Bassbash if anyone is interested...otherwise will be posted in the classifieds at the end of November.
