Wals are lovely but have you tried these yet? Pedulla Pentabuzz (loads of sustain with lots of bright mwah) Ashbory bass (Rubbery sound a little like an upright and very even response) Godin Acoustibass (light weight and very resonant) NS Wav upright (long scale add huge depth and bloom to the notes) All of them are standard setting fretless instruments in their own way.

Yeah, but all I'm saying is that this was the prevailing opinion after the novelty wore off. IIRC 1212L's were pretty popular back then and the other models may not have been given the same consideration. Lozz mentioned prominent mids during the summary so it seems the tide might be turning - mid hump or not.

When Schroeders were new and trendy (about 2007/8), they eventually fell out of favour because they had a mid hump. If today's shoot out is any indication, the mid hump seems to be seen as something positive again. Just goes to show that just because something is technically efficient and well engineered doesn't mean it sounds better than less efficient cabs. BTW, I got the name of my cabs wrong. fEARfuls are the cabs available on plan, fEARless are the cabs I brought. Sorry for that but I'm pleased they got such a positive reaction from everyone. The strip connectors were not very successful and I ended up soldering the connections directly. Gluing tinfoil alongside the strips can provide additional reflectivity.

Powerful valve amps are heavy and expensive because valves are not efficient, (and as already stated) there's low demand and they're expensive to mass produce for that demand. 100-200w amps are around and reasonable cost. Think Fender Bassman (135w), Mesa Boogie Buster combo (200w), Marshall Superbass (100w), Matamp if you can find them, Soundcity heads (120-200w). Above that, Mesa Boogie Bass 400+ heads are fantastic and can be had for between £600-1000 depending on whether you import from the US or not. Otherwise you won't get much change from £1200. Besides which, unless someone is playing large venues, the low end from valve heads tends to be overwhelming for small venues...in my experience at least.

It'll take you 1.5 hours to get to somewhere near where I am and the drive there will be another 1.5 hours. I'm leaving to collect another chatter from Horn Park around 10:30am and we're aiming to arrive shortly after 12.

The difference is remarkable. It's become a completely different amp! I'll probably bring it to the SE Bass Bash...

After being dissatified for a while with the gain on my Burman Pro501, I decided to replace the remainder of the chinese valves left in by the previous owner (from Lindisfarne) with Sovtek 12AX7 LPS valves. All I can say is that it transformed the amp overdrive from a cheesy sounding 70's fuzz box with a flabby bottom end from a Dave Stewart track to a nasty, raw sounding monster with a tight bottom end and loads of crunch. If you want to bump the gain up in your amp, I can't recommend the Sovtek LPS valves enough.

The words breaking down and Genz Benz rarely appear in a sentance together. My Shuttle 6.0's have been workhorses.
