This neck is based on the Classic 5 neck with measurements taken off my own bass but with a narrow nut (43mm). The photo above shows my own commission, to explore the feasibility of offering fingerboard binding at some point in the future and to demonstrate what a wooden fingerboard and custom inlays might look like. I've been told the Classic 5 neck will also fit the 21 fret USA SUB5 as well (which was a precursor to the Classic 5) but not the 22 fret Indonesian made Sterling SUB5. Have a look below for options and upgrades.
Dimensions (Classic 5/USA SUB5 spec unless stated otherwise):
Nut width: 43mm
Neck depth at nut: 20.5mm (Steinberger profile: 19.3mm)
12th fret width: 60.9mm (Steinberger profile: 60.4mm)
Neck depth at 12th fret: 23.8mm (Steinberger profile: 22mm)
Heel thickness: 28.3mm
Width at 21st fret: 69mm
Neck pocket length: 72.5mm
Fingerboard radius 11" (EB spec)
Tuner holes (for open back tuners):
17.46mm (11/16") bushing-hole diameter (TBC)
14.28mm (9/16") post-hole diameter (TBC)
Necks come with:
PEEK fingerboard with MOP side dots, Luminay side dots are available for £10 upcharge. Rosewood, ebony and wenge fingerboards are available for a £75 upcharge.
Fingerboard inlays: MOP or abalone dots are standard, MOP blocks are a £30 upcharge. Abalone blocks are also available but slightly smaller than jazz blocks. Other options - please reach out to me and lets discuss what might be possible.
TUSQ nuts installed but not slotted (slotting requires a string gauge to be assumed)
21 stainless steel frets (levelled to a straight neck)
Double action truss rods (heel capstan wheel style adjustment)
M4x40 neck bolts and inserts will be supplied. (NB the necks don't come pre-drilled because neck bolt locations vary from bass to bass, the inserts must be used)
Tuner holes are drilled ( TBC) but screw holes for tuners are not (again, because different tuner designs have different hole locations)
NB: Dimensions are consistent with preEB SR4 and SR Classic 5 necks but are not Ernie Ball Music Man licensed products or in anyway associated with Ernie Ball Inc. obviously. There may be fractions of a millimetre difference due to manufacturing tolerances, we recommend having an experienced luthier fit the neck for the best possible fit.
