would a bad drummer make you quit a band? I just did :-(
Kiwi replied to mrtcat's topic in General Discussion
Isn't the whole point of the drummer to keep the timing? If he can't do it then he's no asset to the band. yes, I've quit over drummers like that.
Me too. And drummers with no volume control. -

Mark King's tone during Children Say on the Live At Wembley DVD/video was my standard for a long time. Over the years I've discovered it was from combination of the Jaydee bass, heavily pushed, mic'ed, 10" cones and DI feed into FOH. Not exactly something I could achieve in my home studio without disturbing the neighbours. Jimmy Johnson's solo'd graphite neck Alembic with Lee Ritenour is particularly nice, too. More than four strings...John Patitucci in the early days on his Smith was lovely. Ironically, Nathan East's Yamaha BBNEII has never impressed me on his recordings but I've played them in shops many times and loved what I heard. My Spector NS5CR takes the cake for tone so far though. Lovely, warm, growly sounds...I've yet to play it live but am pretty confident that it would sound amazing. My recent Status purchase has impressed me also - a surprisingly versatile instrument capable of some convincing p-bass tones as well as the classic Status snarl. While the Spector has more growl, the Status is probably a more suitable work horse.

Which lightweight power amp to pair with a valve preamp?
Kiwi replied to Freddie75's topic in Amps and Cabs
Powersoft do good reasonable weight Class D amps with plenty of grunt. Best check the secondhand options unless you have a hotline to Santa!
This - Peavey do some cheap (albeit older) Class D amps in their DPC range. The one you probably want to keep an eye out for is the DPC 1400. Alternatively Dood was selling a Powersoft power amp for reasonable money last month. -

I was mulling through photographs of my old kit and remembered I still had two of these that are surplus to requirements. I originally bought three of these sets for gigging live - two were in cases and one set wasn't. They've proved to be very reliable so long as you don't put rechargables in them. They're in great condition and each run on separate frequencies so you can have both sets running at the same gig on separate instruments. I'll have to confirm the frequency bands later in the week. Asking £75 per set or you can have both for £130. The science bit: No trades. I really need the cash for a non bass related purchase. First person with the money gets the pedal. A 10% deposit to secure either item is absolutely OK if you need to raise funds to purchase so long as the balance is paid within 30 days. Otherwise you risk losing the deposit. If it doesn't sell on here within 4 or so weeks, it will be sold on Ebay. Postage or collection is possible. Postage cost is additional to the asking price...allow about £10-15 but I'll need to confirm depending on your address and budget.

I've decided to embark on a rationalisation of my purchases over the last 10 years as the cash is needed for another aspiration. So I'm putting this wee cracker of a rack unit up for sale. Originally I got this for more control over mids in my rack set up. However I've moved away from a rack set up to a lightweight Class D based set up that is a one hand lift. Class D amps give me the mids I've been seeking. What you get with this unit is a two channel valve based parametric eq design for balanced and unbalanced inputs. Each channel has four bands (low, low-mid, mid-high, highs). So if you happen to gig small stages, this will help dial out the boom. If you have a bass that is excessively bright, this will help you dial into those sizzley frequencies. Alternatively...use it in the studio!

Continuously variable input and output gain controls (-20dB to +20dB)
Four bands of fully parametric equalisation per channel: LF: 30Hz to 1kHz, LM: 100Hz to 3kHz, HM: 1kHz to 12kHz, HF: 3kHz to 20kH
Each band offers 15dB of cut or boost
Each band features variable Q (bandwidth) between 0.5 and 5
More information is available here: http://tlaudio.co.uk...ucts/5013.shtml NB: The latest version has optical outs and pull controls, this version doesn't. I'll post more pictures after it has been unpacked. The science bit: No trades. So the cost of commission will be added to the cost of the amp. Collection from SE London is preferred. However I can deliver within London/Kent/M25 south for the cost of Zipcar hire (£8.50/hour) subject to availability. I can also deliver to any London mainline train station terminus (Kings Cross, Paddington, Victoria etc.) at the weekend or anywhere between Liverpool Street and Farringdon during the week.

I've decided to embark on a rationalisation of my purchases over the last 10 years as the cash is needed for another aspiration. This bass is the second J Update made by Chris in 1994 for Danish session player Christian Danstrom. It's designed to do the Marcus Miller thing and I actually preferred the warmer sound of this bass over the Skarbee J Update that I used to own. The bass has active and passive modes at the flick of a small switch. The original pickups were a bit weedy sounding so I ordered some Celinder upgrades that are more in keeping with a passive 70's jazz bass. I haven't measured the string spacing and the bass has yet to be unpacked but would expect it to be around 18mm. I will check and confirm. The neck dimensions are worth noting - the nut is half way between a jazz and a precision bass in width. Otherwise the neck is fast and slim. The condition of the bass is fair - its been someone's workhorse so has its own share of dings and knocks, a few go through to the wood on the edge of the bass. None are large than the fingernail on my little finger. I did think about getting the bass refinished but to be honest, the dings offer peace of mind - one or two extra knocks are unlikely to affect its value. Having said that, the bass has never been played outside the house during my ownership. The asking price reflects the condition. I've decided to embark on a rationalisation of my purchases over the last 10 years as the cash is needed for another aspiration. This iconic instrument needs no introduction, it was built in 1984 and is a early narrow width 5 string which makes it fairly uncommon. Basically, Steinberger fitted 5 string bridges, nuts (and modified pickups to cope with the wider string spacing) to their four string instruments ahead of developing wide necked 5 strings. The string spacing on this bass is a tad over 13mm but still comfortable to play for those who don't have fat fingers. The most suprising thing is the amount of low end this instrument puts out which is at odds with its diminutive appearance. The HAZ labs single pot eq boosts treble and cuts bass in one direction, and cuts treble/boosts bass in the other. One of the fattest sounding eq's I have encountered. No surprise that Steinberger XL2's remain popular with reggae/dub bassists. There are no issues and the bass is in excellent condition..I'm tempted to say near mint because I haven't been able to find any signs of careless use...or user wear for that matter. Even the paint on the tuning knobs is unworn.
