1.
But that's one of the beautiful things about the Kemper, you can make your own profiles!
While it is an amazing thing, the point I'm making is that for live gigs...so what? The difference between a Kempler SVT profile and a NI or iOS SVT profile is unlikely to be meaningful on stage. It's like a well known amp manufacturer releasing a super hi-fi studio quality bass amp in a stack format for live use. Complete overkill for the situation.
 2. I think the Kempler has its place but only in a studio situation where very precise profiles of amps and their dynamics can really be appreciated. There are plenty of cheaper alternatives that can provide ready made amp profiles that will do the job live.
 3. I've been using a laptop with Native Instruments Guitar Rig Kontrol for 5 years now which means I could take my laptop to a gig instead of multi effects (assuming I didn't mind risking some plonker spilling beer on it at some point).. I'm not clear on how the iOS is an improvement, can anyone enlighten me?
 4. you're new around here...tsk
 5.
^^ Sweet Jesus, what did I start?
Had one of them creative urges again and it needed scratching. Haven't been inspired by you for a while
 6.
Mind you, that could mean 'Yes we've got one, except we haven't got it in the shop and it's still somewhere in China'.
Reminds me of the Python Cheese shop sketch: Sales assistant: "Welcome to the National Acoustic Guitar Shop, sir. Is there anything I could help you with, on this marvellously fine day?" Customer: "I was sitting in the car on the northbound lane of the A34 just now, listening to the Nolan Sisters greatest hits, and I came over all...musical." Sales assistant: "Musical, sir?" Customer: "Euphonius." Sales assistant: "Eh?" Customer: "Mellifluent!" Sales assistant: "Come again?" Customer: "Eee ah felt raht ooplifted an' inspayad! 'Ad an attack of the Demis Roussoses!" Sales assistant: "Ah, inspired." Customer: "Exactamundo. So I thought to myself, a light caress of the catgut might be just the thing. So I abated my Nolaning forthwith, made haste and impregnated myself in this very establishment." Sales assistant; "Y'what?" Customer: "I want to buy a guitar!" Sales assistant: "Ohhhh...I thought you were complaining about the bass player slapping in the background sir." Customer: "By Rowan Atkinson's vibrating rubber genetalia, all forms of low frequency embodiment send me off into divine paroxyms of ecstacy!" Sales assistant: "Come again?" Customer: "Eeeeee, ah laik a flappy bass line ah do." Sales assistant: "I see, sir. Certainly gives the cobwebs a clearing!" Customer: "There better be more than cobwebs between your ears too my son. Now then...how are you on Fylde?" Sales assistant: "Just sold the last one sir, another shipment won't be ready until next month I'm afraid." Customer: "Well, not to worry, I'd like to try an Everett." Sales assistant: "We've been out of them quite some time Sir. Low volume production runs and only when he's got the wood in." Customer: "I see, clearly I'm the victim of unfortunate timing. How about a Brook?" Sales assistant: "Normally sir, yes. But the hamster powering the delivery van needed replacing and they'd run out. Bit of a global hamster shortage at the moment I'm afraid. Nothing we can do about it." Customer: "Cort..?" Sales assistant: "No." Customer: "Epiphone?" Sales assistant: "No." Customer: "Taylor?" Sales assistant: "No." Customer: "Martin?" Sales assistant: "No." Customer: "Yamaha...?" Sales assistant: "No." Customer: "Larriviee?" Sales assistant: [Pauses]"No." Customer: "Guntfuttock, you can't go wrong with a decent, English brand like Gruntfuttock, can you?" Sales assistant: "Yes we've got one." Customer: "Ah!" Sales assistant: "Except we haven't got it in the shop as such, sir." Customer: "What do you mean it isn't in the shop?" Sales Assistant: "It's somewhere in China." Customer:"China?" Sales assistant: "Well, China-ish. It's still being built...from parts sourced in Burma." Customer: "So you don't have it?" Sales assistant: "No, not really sir, sorry." Customer: "And its not exactly English is it?" Sales assistant: "Not any more sir, they needed to stay competitive by cutting costs." Customer: "Do you have any other guitars?" Sales assistant: "Yes sir, Washburn, Takamine, Ovation, Gretch, Guil-." Customer: "I mean, do you have any of them in stock...?" Sales assistant: "Aaaah...not, as it were IN the shop, in a literal sense sir, no." Customer: "So just for the sake of clarification, my good man. Is this, in fact, a guitar shop?" Sales assistant: "Oh yes sir!" Customer: "But you don't appear to have any guitars in stock." Sales assistant: "We do metaphorically sir. In the sense that we still engage in the process of selling guitars..." Customer: "I'M NOT HERE TO BUY A METAPHOR MY LAD!!" Sales assistant: "No sir, but we can certainly sell you a guitar." [Laughs nervously]. Customer: "How can I make an informed purchase decision when you haven't got anything to play...?" Sales assistant: "We're actually an online business, sir. We rent a cheap shop front on an abandoned, provincial high street just to appear more sophisticated. We can place an order online if you like, sir?"
 7. Too bad it doesn't go to 11. That's one louder than 10.
 8. I tried a few Arias in the former bass centre shop and the E strings sounded consistently dead. I couldn't determine whether that was due to the strings or the construction of the bass though. Has anyone tried one with new strings?
 9. Distance Selling Regs allow for a cooling off period on purchases made from legitimate businesses (not Ebay private sellers). They're regs not an act though which may explain why you couldn't find info on them. Try these links: Horses mouth Legal opinion Which magazine
 10.
That is what we used to call 'A man's rig'.
If I asked to see a womans rig, would I be risking a slap in the chops?
 11. I had a chat with Yolanda (and Steve L.) too. She mentioned that while it was flattering, being showered with praise was also a little overwhelming. If you guys will accept her as a regular member, hopefully she might pop back soon.
 12. If the preamp (Op-amp) chip is accessible (rather than covered by epoxy), they're cheap as chips to extract and replace if you can find a supplier. I replaced the one in my Jaydee circuit a number of times before going to a Bart circuit.
 13.
I'm actually suffering physical pain playing disco stuff . Last week we introduced Donna Summer's Hot Stuff in to our set. This is the first tune in years that has caused me any grief. It must be the galloping along pace, coupled with all the octaving. My hand feels like it's contracting in to a claw and the cramp starts in my forearm.
For plucking, I use thumb, plus two fingers in a clawhammer technique to get the triplets also. Works really well and no cramp.
 14. I noticed Rob Harris at the LBGS was playing through a new Fender Princeton Reverb. It wasn't lacking in volume for 15w and sounded pleasantly fat although the treble was a little sparkly.
 15.
Had my picture taken with Lee Sklar and realised i am getting more like him not shaving for the rest of my life is the easy part but i must practice more if i am really going to carry it off.
Was that your photo on Lee's facebook page? You look like brothers
 16. I have a graphite necked Panger too, unfortunately it's with Jon Shuker waiting to be finished. I thought the circuit in mine sounded pretty good, all things considered. But it did seem to be built in someone's garage somewhere. The main thing to be careful about is frying the preamp chip. Easily done if there's a short circuit.
 17.
Managed to recommend the Warwick Star Bass to another Basschatter (sorry name escapes me)
Pfft. I usually manage to make more of an impression than that...unless you were recommending to more than one, of course. I had to abandon the Ortega stand too. I don't know why they didn't swap with the hearing protection people out by the auditorium entrance...could have been better business for both!
 18. I have (out of necessity) a designated 'main' bass (the Spector 5) although, once the two self build 5 strings are finished, that'll be 3 basses depending on what the gig is. I have three basses that are slightly collectable but primarily recording instruments, plus a couple of purely collectables. That's enough for me in principle although once I start building my own there is always a chance of more experiments. Because I have some slack in my current collection, I'll be having a clear out of my stuff after I ship it over from NZ too - fewer four strings for starters because I just don't need them. Mainly this is because I know how to get what I want from a bass now and having something that feels and sounds right yet can be versatile when needed means more satisfaction than from other instruments. Its taken the purchase and sale of 30 instruments in the last 10 years to get there however.
 19.
Not sure where the "management got involved" came from cause they certainly never mentioned anything to me or the other guys as far as I know.
The organisers definitely knew there was an issue because I was told they'd recieved complaints. Because I was away at the Lee Sklar seminar, it wasn't clear whether they'd done anything about it. When I got back to the BC stall the atmosphere was noticably quieter and calmer...distinctly like the silence that follows a loud explosion.
In fairness there were two guys playing different rigs simultaneously but believe me loud isn't anything we aim for at the shows. I did speak to the organisers and ask them to police the quiet periods properly because three days at a show like this when it is loud is very tiring.
I watched Eden get a warning earlier in the day from management. I think the organisers could set aside loud rooms for rigs that are booked on a sheet in 30 min slots by amp makers in the same way that people wait for a pool table in a pub. Amp makers could roll their kit in on dollys for punters to give it a belting and at the end of 30 min, return kit to the stand. Alternatively, amp makers could rent out a dedicated loud room.
Hope the show keeps getting proper support from the bassists out there. The drum show will be doubling in size this year because of the commitment shown by the community and I would love to see the same thing happen with the LBGS.
From what I saw, the show got huge support from bass players. The auditorium and conference rooms seemed packed during the master classes. The industry though...? May be less so but Guitar Show in Birmingham probably didn't help.
I didn't know who any of the name players were...
I needed help at times also, I didn't recognise the bloke who plays bass for One Direction for example OR Neil Murray (and I was standing next to Neil at Earls Court for 15min holding my bass). I recognised Mo Foster instantly though - what a lovely guy. Great to see him and Lee Sklar having a bit of chat. I was a bit cheeky and asked Lee what it was like meeting the legendary Mo Foster. Mo got a bit embarrassed.
 20. I'm still in awe of the fact you guys sold every Fodera on your wall. That was crazy.
 21. XL t shirts on the Bass Gear stand weren't being sold by Basschat. But if you want to place an order, drop Ped a line.
 22. I just got back. Had WAY more fun meeting people today than on Saturday. I had a fascinating chat with Jason from Fodera about how they've shifted their business model from a 30 year old start up to a fully functional company. He said things were pretty serious for Fodera financially at one point a few years ago which was a complete revelation given the price tags. Also had a fascinating chat with Sheldon Dingwall about his approach to achieving consistency in the wood selection in basses...and I had a go on the Sklar signature which was pretty damn good. Gawd...my head is still spinning. It was just nice to see so many friendly faces, including the Basschatters who dropped by. Yes it got noisy, the Eden and Hartke guys had a volume battle at one point (when I wasn't around) and management got involved. The slapping in another corner did get a little brutal at times but there were people standing around enjoying it. To be honest, any one wearing ear plugs won't have a problem and in attending these events, there is an expectation that there will be loud low frequencies for certain periods of time. Eden did push the limits quite a bit though but any complaints to the management DOES sort things out and is ALWAYS an option for those who feel uncomfortable.
 23. If you do manage to make Sunday, don't be strangers. Please drop by and say hi. The tall, solid looking chap with the black and grey basschat longsleeve t-shirt is me and it's always good to put faces to usernames.
