You might even have grounds for a professional complaint to the [url="http://www.gmc-uk.org/"]General Medical Council[/url] if you have reason to believe the doctors are profiteering.

[/quote] My first bass had a ply body...and so did my second. So I upgraded to a Jaydee and never looked back because the ply bodies dampened a lot of the lows and didn't sustain anywhere near as well as the Jaydee. I've not tried the multi-hued ritter in RR's post above but generally I would take a solid body of super cheap meranti over "birch ply" any day. The Kubicki necks are laminated but the laminates are a lot thicker than those in ply wood. It's probably not doing the design any justice to call the neck plywood any more than calling it is to call a steinberger 'plastic'.

  7. One of these pedals might well be my Christmas present this year. The B3 was looking like a front runner due to the dual compressor patch and USB programmability but I realised they both offer synth patches with selectable waveforms. Unfortunately, the M5 manuals are a bit light on detail about the synthomatic patch waveforms, apart from saying 8 waveforms are available. Can anyone with the M5 confirm if the wave forms available in Synthomatic track the pitch of each note like the B3 does? Also, what waveforms are available? Square, triangle and saw in addition to sine?
  8. Rob, Aaron Armstrong here in the UK MAKES Ken Smith's pickups. He could have supplied something similar for your needs for about 90-110 quid a unit. I've got one set that has been slightly tweaked for my self build and plan on ordering another.
  9. We had a neck diving, japanese made copy of a Hofner 500/1 strung with flats that has pretty much defined ever since what I dislike in basses. (NB: The genuine article is quite nice to play by comparison.)

[/quote] I try rigs and basses out now and I still can't figure out how people can hear what notes they're playing, using flats and an 8x10. But I guess it makes them feel good. After owning over 30 instruments in the last 10 years, I think how instruments feel is probably the most under-rated aspect of quality.

  17. Ah, I take it back. Ped reminded me that Ben was doing some tidying up behind the scenes. We'd agreed this a month ago but it had been delayed a couple of weekends and I forgot that it was happening this weekend.

  19. I've asked myself the same. In an idealogical world I'd only own 4's for recording classic bass tones. But reality double hits in that I don't record very much AND I have three other basses (Alembic, Steinberger XL25A, Pangborn) that are collected and have no real role to play in a working bass arsenal anyway. So there's no room for ideology really, only the satisfaction of ownership...and I LIKE being able to play different basses as the mood takes me. So what the hell. I'll probably keep all the fours until I've both made my perfect bass (not too far off) and I find something non-bass related that is more satisfying to own (like a classic car).

I suggest there's no black and white position based on precedent.

  25. I love how tight they are although they're so tight with the stabs at times its bordering on OCD. I think they will gain more respect doing their own material than rehashing other songs because not all the songs they've played fit into their playing style. I wish the bass was fatter in the mix because the keyboards and drums seem to dominate everything which is a shame because Henrik is doing some interesting stuff..
