BB basses from the 80's can have pretty chunky necks but they have a fabulous P bass sound. Little River Band's bassist Wayne Nelson was a big endorser during the 80's (and sported one of the first BB5000 5 strings when they came out). The RBX series left me a little dead but are also good instruments. The TRB through necks in the 90's are also stunning value although I've found the string spacing to be very wide. For 40 quid you did extremely well.

Welcome. That's a fantastic collection of 6 string, short scale, piccolo basses. What amps do you use with those?

Toby Pro basses (with the wenge laminate necks) are very good value used and, with a change of electronics, transform a good instrument into almost a pro level.

I was surprised by the listed value of their assets. Its a shame that a company goes like this after the history its generated.

Give Hevos a look - very high quality handmade class D amps and their latest line up includes an amp with dual inputs. They're not over priced either.

Jon has decided to push his own builds before the end of April so I'm booked to go back in on May 12. I'll get at least one done for sure...hopefully both but the precision stuff does take a long time to set up, especially when tired. I've also been thinking about maple and wenge necks as on the instruments I've played, they have the mids that I'm looking for. But we'll see how the steinberger necks go first.

I did a bit of Youtube surfing yesterday - the Fender 30 and 60 combos (around 1980) have the Fender sound and (in the US at least) seem to be ridiculously cheap.

I've done a bit of research on the Yammie SA models too - very well made!

Marshall overdrive seems fairly easy to achieve...even with just a pedal. But they sound kind of flat to me. That bouncey, chimey Fender clean tone is pretty dynamic. When I've played through a twin in the past, the slightly compressed highs made me feel like I was interacting with the amp...it was so very far from flat sounding and I got a lot of satisfaction from giving the strat a decent spanking. But twins weigh a tonne and are too loud for my needs.

Although he has a very strong set of personal values, I'm not sure what Prince's tactics are commercially. If he's attempting to maintain value of his product by restricting supply, it seems as likely to create frustration in his fan base as demand. Looks like he's over here on Feb 3 for a short series of impromptu concerts in London. Unfortunately I have a formal dinner on Feb 4 to attend and need to pack for a trip to China on Feb 6. Here's hoping something is planned on Feb 5 and I'm within reach of tickets...his 2007 after show gigs were a life changing experience for me.

He nearly lost it on a train late last year.

I have two NS5CR FMs and they both replaced Ken Smith BSR5GNs. Same growl, more midrange and I customised them with Wizard pickups, Noll parametric eq and coil splits for a bit more versatility. Amazing value for money and one is definitely a keeper. For a while, I also owned a Euro 6 with a spalted maple top and alder wings that came out of the Sound Control sell off. It was also a nice bass that I gigged for a while but it didn't have the mid range growl of the all maple NSCR5.

It's a complicated issue. Some of the live bootlegs have no commercial value at all yet can become very valuable archives. Also Prince has to balance up the negative publicity of suing a fan and the positive profile that bootlegs give against his potential loss of royalties...assuming that there is a direct relationship between live bootlegs and the loss of income he might have gained from publishing recorded material at the same event. Some artists seem to be like King [s]Midas[/s] Canute - trying to control something that ultimately can't really be controlled. A more astute and pragmatic way to use illegal downloads is to use them to help identify new markets. Does it use 6L6 or 6V6 tubes?

My EBS Combo 60 can be used with acoustics anyway (according to the user manual) so I use it with electric too. Its a little too hi-fi to be honest but settles down through a speaker sim.
