2. I'm surprised it lasted this long. I unsubscribed back in 2004 after one particular member decided being alpha male meant repressing or undermining any views that didn't agree with his own.
3.
In one way he's right. If you're selling any product the punters need to have confidence that they know what they're getting. If One Direction went on stage displaying tattoos, greasy hair and somehow managed to put on a heavy metal act, they could be finished. Their "success" could be over. If The Rolling Stones went on in "Boy Band" gear, they'd capture the front page of every paper in the country. David Jones proves Mr Dunnery wrong though, or maybe he proves him right too in a perverse way. In the 70s he invented a character and played that character on every album. Yet he re-invented that character on every album. On the other hand maybe his "thing" was that "David Bowie" changed all the time?
The technique is known as 'mirroring'. It's one mechanism that can be used to influence people - in the sense that if your audience believes you share their values/ideals/tastes and trusts you then they'll be more likely to accept your credibility. Typically this operates at an intimate, interpersonal level but its also applied as a sales technique and politicians, of course, are roundly chastised when they DON'T do it...although in that case it's called being "off-message". One clear example I can think of in real life is those f***ing bright trousers that were all the rage last Summer. I thought they looked dreadful but clearly the people wearing them thought the trousers said something important. Apparently they had roots in middle class perceptions of rural aristocratic life along with the anoraks and checked shirts. So of course it made sense (in my own mind at least) that thousands of middle class, status conscious, London hooray henries and henriettas would want to associate themselves with something class-related and aspirational. There again...maybe others wore them just because they thought they were fashionable.
4. OK so I've had a chance to review the results and they're definitely interesting and may even be relevant to other active discussions. We had just over 350 responses which was great and provided an insight for us who was actually engaged with the site at the time the survey was open. I'm going to post just Section 1 today with other sections being posted over the next week or so. I know some of the text is hard to read - my apologies for that, I haven't managed to find a way to download the displayed results yet. It's something I'm working on. Question 1 - How long have you been a member of Basschat for? Clearly there are a lot of member who have been part of the community for a long time! Question 2 - Whch age range do you fit within? In some ways, this was a bit of a surprise - a very strong peak in the 45-54 range and a slightly lower but still significant peak in the 35-44 year range. This is consistent with the age distribution of who generally shows up to Bassbashes. BUT I was wondering where all the younger, just starting out players were though. They seem to be under represented considering so much of what volume musical instrument manufacturers produce is aimed at beginners. Question 3 - Which of the following best describes your level of playing confidence? No real surprises here - a nice standard bell curve. But again, beginners might possibly be under-represented. Question 4 -How did you find out about Basschat? Twelve percent of you are the geniuses that legends are made of. Otherwise, no surprises here. Other methods? No comment. Question 5 - Silly question: Do you approve of silliness on the forum? And...if so, why not? Some fairly serious replies. More to come over the next few days.
5. Judging by the headstock logo at 1:05 its a Tobias. But there's not enough light to tell what model it is.
6. Hmmm, Nick Beggs is in LB...I wonder if he takes on students.
7. lol He was flat sharing with Paul Gambaccini for a while too - but they were never in a relationship together. http://www.dailyreco...-my-fans-969372
8. Seems like their management was giving them some bad advice at the time...but it was nice to see them all reconciled.
9. This is a fascinating video - regardless of whether you like the band or not. They all seem individually very nice, so how the hell did they end up falling out? Also - I've decided Nick Beggs must be immortal. Not a line on the mans face after 20 years seems incredible...cliff-esque even. Smooth operator too with Limahl in private...
10. Or if cloning isn't an option: Vox1 - Beverly Knight Vox2 - Kate Cebrano Guitar - Nile Rogers Bass - Sharay Reed Keys - David Paich Drums - Jeff Pocaro (or if we're talking about the living) - Sheila E
11. Vox1 - Prince Vox2 - Prince Guitar - Prince Bass - Prince Keys - Prince Drums - Prince
12. Wal's are wonderful. One of the few instruments I've played where there is really some indefinable magic about how they sound and feel. And they're so consistently good as well. I really don't know why I never owned one.
13. The problem with doing each fret is that its level will only be relative to its neighbours, not to the string. If you don't have low action, it probably won't matter though. But a flat beam will ensure a more consistent result .
14. 140w into a 2x12 cab of 103db sensitivity is perfectly adequate for pub gigs in my experience. Just keep the drummer under control and castrate the guitarist.
15. Also: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/196455-diy-fret-leveling/
16. Crowning the fret means less pressure is needed to make clean string contact. Also fret levelling is normally done with carborundrum abrasive paper stuck to a straight edge, not a fret file. Crowning fret files are cheap too - less than the straight edge. If you like low action, you'll be better off getting a straight edge that can slip under the strings while the neck is in tension.
17. Traynor are superb value. Otherwise, look for a Mesa Boogie Bass 400+ or a Buster combo but be prepared for a huge wait/weight (aha).
I came to the same conclusion as you and have just bought myself a 1972 Burman MPA Pre and SL100 Powerpak Slave. I'm preparing myself for their arrival by doing weights for at least an hour a day...
Was that the set advertised on Ebay recently? I was tempted but I have too much gear I don't regularly use as it is. There was a complete set for sale recently too - with vertical stakced speakers. Welcome to the club though
18. They look too much like a Wal to me...and they were launched when Wal was in decline too.
19.
You know when you get a cut inside your mouth and you just can't stop tonguing it? Well it's like that
I use clove oil followed by ibuprofen. Clove oil tastes nasty, but managing an irritation so it doesn't get worse is important.
20.
Where is this hatred? Whether or not the manufacturer is a BCer or not is of no relevance.
Apart from basic respect. Its not the opinions which matter but the way in which they are expressed which perhaps is the issue.
Feel free to quote me "slagging" Barefaced off - I don't deny it. My reasons are much more complicated that just not "liking" it.
I recall Alex has already had issues on the forum in the past with his enthusiasm and passion for what he does being misunderstood. This is why he has stated he has more important things to do with his time than fight petty point scoring battles. Others share his enthusiasm because he has developed a product that meet peoples' needs. His product speaks for itself. It's a position that many companies would deeply envy and a personal tribute to Alex's sheer cleverness. Keep it up the criticism though chaps, both of you come across as a bit vindictive because its just one issue. But you are also getting people passionate and excited in defence of Alex. It's great for Alex to see and great for Basschat!
21. I've never seen one in white ever...I really hope the paint doesn't hide stunning quilted maple!
22. Lee Jackson is well known for hot rodding Fender amps - a bit like Paul Rivera only he never worked for Fender.
23.
By the way, here are some pics of a Fender-endorsed '59 prototype. Presumably, Herbie's followed this... Yep - it has a Precision decal...
It looks like your Roscoe Beck....Surely shum mishtake?!
24.
TBH, I am struggling to give a toss here. Its a lovely old Jazz bass with history written all over it, played by a great bass player and it was made before everything was bar-coded and inter-webbed. So the best we have to go on is the word of the man who has owned it from new.
Exactly.
25.
OK, let's cut to the chase here. Apparently Herbie F said in an interview: "I bought the bass on Oct. 12, 1959, from Manny's in New York. If you remove the neck you can see Leo Fender's signature and because it's a prototype it has various bits that are not standard. For example, underneath the pickguard they installed what was tantamount to a fuzzbox but it was very primitive - a couple of resistors that cut the signal in half and fouled it up. It had a switch on it and when you tried to cut the roughness out it wouldn't cut out properly, so I took it out." That's a pretty black/white statement from him there. I bought the bass on Oct. 12, 1959. So what's the suggestion from the doubters here? Is he a bit confused? Is he a liar? What?
I agree. Herbie talked about this specific issue after buying me a pint. He gets visibly irritated when people challenge him over the date...as if he's lying or something. Whatever the books or theory says, if the man bought it in 59, then as far as I and he are concerned, he bought it in 59. He isn't comfortable with the idea that its a prototype either. It was an off the shelf purchase and that's all there is to his story. I see where he's coming from. Why Fender would want to ship a prototype from Fullerton to New York when they could have sold it in LA is anyone's guess and seems implausible. Maybe Fender started making them in 1959 and someone forgot to tell the authorities.
