Vester Bass Guitar (or is it an Ibanez SR 5 String?)
winterfire666 replied to Jonnyboy Rotten's topic in Bass Guitars
Watch out on the price - I paid £100 for mine, but when I came to sell it a few months later couldn't get more than £80. That was a few years ago, but I doubt if they'll have appreciated since then.
thats silly cheap for the quality of the instrument. my vester argus cost me £350 brand new (i think it should have been £450 but i got a deal because of a tiny unnoticable natural wood blemish) and easily compares to basses in the £600-700 price range in terms of quality although i looked at the trade catalogue at the time and it was one of the highest spec models ill never sell it though :^) -
yeah, it seems like forever since the original order was placed but now the build is happening:^) it will probably be a few weeks before the pics start to come in though.
MB1. They did make a rather splendid Thumb clone.
yeah the 'clipper' i shouldnt have sold that one, better than the warwick counterpart in my opinion (with upgraded pickups that is) -
Vester Bass Guitar (or is it an Ibanez SR 5 String?)
winterfire666 replied to Jonnyboy Rotten's topic in Bass Guitars
i have owned 4 vesters and still own one now and i think a friend of mine had this exact model. they are built well but do vary from instrument to instrument. vester made generally good quality korean and japanese instruments and had a broad range of designs. eventually they got tied up in a legal distpute due to fender taking offence to their logo shape which was similar to the fender one and went under. (a shame considering the quality was on par or better than the fenders at the time and they were cheaper too) if the neck is straight and there is not too much fretwear then this is a fair price. -
oops forgot to add a link to the fine fellows wesite who has taken on the build for me http://xylembassguitar.com/ check his stuff out, it is not your avarage run of the mill stuff :^)
The Markbass heads, especially the F1/F500 and LM2/3 are notoriously 'flat' compared to most amplifiers for bass. There is barely any colour; something that took me some getting used to. The cabs however, are different. They all have their own voicings. Most the Markbass cabs have a more pronounced midrange to cut through, (although not all of them). They sound very 'punchy'. A Markbass amp through something like a Bergantino (again, they have their own flavours, but more 'your bass' orientated) is a great sound, and its pretty much your bass. It's night and day when you compare to something like a highly voiced GK or Ampeg amp.
i may have to try one through my barefaced S12t :^)
-
I'd say what you are hearing is in fact the character of the amps with the GK and Ampeg. The 'flat' sound of the Markbass is basically your bass with a little bit of warmth. The Ampeg and the GK ADD their own voice, but the Markbass leaves the bass as it is. If you want your bass to sound like your bass, the Markbass would be the way to go, all filters off and 12 on the EQ.
im quite enjoying this thread, i tried a puma 900 a while ago and was impressed and would like to try more out. but i have to say i couldnt disagree with the above coment more. i have tried many markbass heads and cabs and cannot get a tone im happy with at all and more importantly none of the markbass rigs ever sounded like my bass. i have recorded my basses using many methods and markbass stuff colours it more than most amps i have ever tried. i do think the coloration is quite nice when played alone and can see why it appeals to certain kinds of players, but it aint for me. so each to their own i suppose:^) (iv been wanting to say that for ages) back to tecamp, i would love to see a uk distributor, especially one with a NW outlet.

Bass POD questions (+ Rack mounted system etc)
winterfire666 replied to Bassection's topic in Amps and Cabs
i have had a couple of rack rigs and the best thing to do is decide what you need in terms of sound shaping(EQ, amp moddeling), effects(drive, modulation, ambience) and power. (although the same wattage rules apply, i found it handy to have a little extra headroom with a pa amp to get the same kind of volume) when you have a requirements list sorted there are literally hundreds of different options, and depending what you need you can source a suitably sized rack too, additionally i would be more than happy to discuss options directy if think a chat might help (just PM me) -
one good 2x12 is definitely enough for metal, i play in 2 metal bands and have never come close to bieng too quiet, in fact i dont think there has been a single gig where i havent beeen asked to turn down by the sound guy. (and both drummers really hit em) it does depend on the cab though, they vary a lot, if you do a bit of research and bide your time im sure you will be able to pick somethin up which is more than adequate for your budget, good luck with the shopping :^) a bit bigger but not heavy at all, it might be worth checking this out, great cab though http://basschat.co.uk/topic/211807-tech-soundsystems-4x12-nd-412-s-cover/

has anyone said Mr Bungle yet? if not why not? Mr Bungle - Mr Bungle, (the albums after this one get very odd indeed) Awesome bass parts and highly unusual arrangements too, lots of Fun Tyr - Ragnarok , very interesting Viking/folk metal band from the Faroe islands, very melodic, and wonderfull bass playing, hes definitely thinking outside the box, which is nice to see in metal (and he sings backup too live the clever sod)

i had a similar problem once with bass and it turned out to be the focusrite preamps, theres nothing technically wrong with them i just dont like em, at all. sold the focusrite sapphire pro 14, bought a roland quad capture, problem went away and balance is restored :^) a lot of people swear by them and im not focusrite bashing but when i swapped it the difference was night and day. or alternatively it could be a software problem

Do older strings sound nicer than new ones?
winterfire666 replied to BetaFunk's topic in General Discussion
No, dull, lifeless, just plain No. -
i honestly dont really know about the powered section in that version, i got mine before it was available so i have not researched it at all, i would recommend check out out the kemper forum, there is a lot of info on there about all things kemper related http://www.kemper-amps.com/forum/ there is a great questions section which covers most stuff too :^)
I'm a bit skeptical about any modelling kit's ability to capture subtle compression effects of tube amps though.
strangely that is what the kemper excells at, i dont like moddelers and the kpa is not a modeller. remember it cant capture an amp in its entirity but it can capture a snapshot of a particular sound or selection of settings and you can then further adjust the captured sound or snapshot in ways the original amp couldnt, which is pretty cool. i havent tried it yet on a all valve bass amp (as i dont have one) but it does really work for all tube guitar amps and bass amps with a valve pre.
Can it profile without a mic, say off a DI?
yup, thats the easiest way really :^) you can also add other processing into the signal chain for example if you have a session in a well kitted out studio you can create a profile of the complete signal chain, amp-cab-mic-desk-outboard all at once :^)
-
I'll be very interested to watch how you profile something, is it an in depth process?
its surprisingly easy, you tend to get best results in a proper studio with a seperate live and control room (just because of easier monitoring)but i have had great results im my loft. once you are set up it can take from 10mins to as long as you want to tweak, guitar profiles are a little easier than bass ones but the recorded results can be indestinguishable from the amp source. i would be happy to have a play sometime, im a bit busy for the next couple of weeks as we are goin away, but it would be cool to set somethin up after that :^) to see the process just check out youtube, there are loads of videos out there.
Just to bump this, how is the Kemper suiting you after a longer time with it? Wanna profile a Matamp?
I would love to profile a matamp!! i love my kemper even more, it really is an epic piece of kit and i honestly couldnt imagine life without it, if money was tight i would get rid of my barefaced/tc rig before parting with it, and probably anything else that i own (except my incoming Xylem bass of course). it keeps on getting better too, the new performance mode is excellent and new effects/features are added regularly (at no extra cost) im particularly liking the formanant shift (and intelligent harmoniser) which they recently added which lets me add a guitar sound over my bass part for those sections where both guitarists are harmonising a lead part and the rhythm part drops out. if anyone has any specific questions about what it can or cant do, just give me a shout. im gonna have to get to a bass bash for a play as soon as my new bass arrives too.
