Nice to see some love for my compatriot Michel Camilo, I remember that gig, it was my first Jazz concert ever. Thanks Bilbo for the video and the memories you brought back. To the people who criticise the music as being "soulless" I think you miss the point, to characterize that piece as soulless you need first to have listen to latin music and then you will understand the context of the tune, it is all about having fun. Because it doesn't contain any Rock, Funk or Soul element it doesn't make it soulless. I know that everyone to it's own but a bit of education goes a long way. Sorry if this sounded a bit patronizing lads.

Andrew Levy, Paul Denman and Tony Grey are other missing on the list of British finest. Looking at the list I come to the conclusion that Britain is the home of some of the finest bass players on earth. We are more than well represented in the world with those cats.
didn't see Later, but I can't tell Friendly fires apart from Bloc Party- same feeble singing over post-punk-lite Gang of Four-rip-off guitars. White lies were similarly pointless on Later- as if we need yet another Joy Division-lite Interpol/Editors clone.
That is called "The NME" syndrome all bands that appear in that magazine are made of the same material and cut with the same scissors. Haven't seen one of those bands that I can say that impress me. All of them sound the same, look the same, sing the same and in the same way, jump around like a bunch of tw@ts (the same) and even use the same basses and amps (P basses and Ampeg). The whole story short "Boring". Sorry rant over.

I bought a red cherry like the one on the picture, I have to say that is the most comfortable bass I've ever player. Being an active guy I dropped a Bartolini NTBT 2 band preamp in and it turned out to be a beast. I love this bass and definitely is a keeper.

Basically it's Billy Sheehan with an extr P pickup close to the bridge. Sounds very well though

Hi guys, Just scored this bad boy (girl?) on the Bay for a song and wonder what do you know about these basses, I know that they are similar to the Dyna basses (Made in USA) but made in Korea. This on is passive with twin buckers and vol-vol/tone-tone electronics. Cheers, The Mac.

Lets see, so Jazz has to be only trad or bop? I thought that the main concept of Jazz was that your imagination was the limit. Cheap shots are easy specially when your body of work can be written in a sheet of toilet paper. Music is art and by any means you can't talk about poor note choices when you are improvising. I tell you some people .......

Saw him a couple of years ago and that was one of the best gigs ever, full of energy and great music. BTW I hate his bassplayer his tone and touch are so ridiculously good that makes my blood boil. I also have the birthday DVD and that was another great gig too.

Or you can get an old computer or laptop and install Ubuntu Studio Linux in it, no latency problems and all the free software in the world. Oh did I forget to mention free ASIO and free software?

If I'm not mistaken Monk was the first to ever record a Jazz record with an electric bass.
This is endemic in the genre at the moment as far as I'm concerned he is not alone. I can't think of 1 'bass' album I would listen to twice. No music, just playing. I don't include bass players as composers/leaders in that, notable example of good stuff, eg Bass Desires Marc Johnson So does Marcus Miller.... no wait..... It's just business, they all want to capitalise on their 'name' and with companies willing to have a punt because they are, or have been, famous session dudes. I'm being facetious, but being great players and sometimes producers does not mean they are automatically going to create works that wil live on. I don't blame them for earning a crust in a fad but I am just not into the whole 'bass on top' thing apart from in a few very particular compositionally appropriate circumstances.
Exactly what I've always said about Marcus Miller and keep getting hammered by people. I will admit it I went to a MM gig a couple of years ago and ended up missing half the gig because I fell asleep! I couldn't stand the barrage of slap and pop anymore. I woke up twice once he started playing the clarinet and the other when he played some of Luther Vandross's stuff and the public started singing along to it. I grew bored of his sound and technique to me is all the same and with no quirkiness. I still like some of his old stuff though. As for JB I agree that his last efforts haven't been good at all, I think he is trying too much to be a soloist and not a bassist and that is where he is lost. I love the stuff he did in fusion but not much the present stuff.
MB1. Cant see what all the fuss is about here?,that Jeff Berlins done nothing since that "War Of The Worlds" thing!
Sorry mate you are wrong that was Herbie Flowers! Having read one more "Jeff is a douche" post it makes me really sad, you know why because I met Jeff twice (one in NY and another back in my motherland) and he was the most reachable and nicest of guys, we even were joking about what people says of him! He gave me lots of good advice too. What JB doesn't manage to do is to explain his point in a way that is easy for most people and sometimes he can sound really arrogant but I attribute that to some degree of frustration. Someone said that learning music doesn't teach you how to groove, well that is one of the most ludicrous statement I've seen, just think about 3 of your favourite players of all time and google a bit and you'll find that those guys learned music. Anyway JB comments are oriented to those guys who want to become professionals like Nathan East, Lee Sklar people who want to play professionally and not only one genre of music. One of the points Jeff made the time we talked was that once you know what you're playing your speed increases because you know where you are going on the fingerboard. Another person said that JB played 3 notes in SB's bass and then gave it back, well he actually played something (in reality he was just a bit of tune) and gave it back but the point he made was that he was able to play that unlined fretless because he knew were the notes are, that's why he said give me one night (I think it was). regarding Metronomes JB states clearly that they are not going to give you time and he is right, he told me that the metronome is only good to learn how to subdivide and if you want to get good timing you should be better of practicing with a drum machine. I guess that the main problem with Jeff is that he doesn't like to spoon feed people but let them discover things by themselves. Rich if you can get your hand on Alan Holdsworth "Water on the brain" to me that's Jeff's best solo ever. Just my 2p.

That is an old Yamaha BB those are really great basses, I always wanted one of those.

I would try the SeA-2 it bring the bass and treble in a concentric pot. I have one in my Encore P copy "Dr. Evil" and sounds very nice and clean. You can get them for £20 on evilBay.
Cheers. Yeah, the control spacing I didn't notice that for a while and we even thought of spraying the centre black when it was being built but I wanted it to still be its own bass and the maple is lovely. It cost me £600, I use to pay £25 every Friday evening after work and Keith would show me what he had done. It took almost a year to build but if I'd have waited 15 years I could have had a real Status when they finally started making lefties. The next bass on my list is a King Bass. Tell me O.T.P.J. has the neck profile changed between the Series II and S2 Classic and is the King Bass different again?
You know what? I like this body more that the real Status, you have a great bass mate and hope you enjoy it more than I'm enjoying it's looks. Keep the lows mate.
