I'm surprised that this bass is recyclable. Everyone knows that Hofner basses are stuffed with dead cats and sawdust. Much like DFS sofas actually.

At least since its recyclable you won't feel so bad when it quickly goes in the bin.

Bergantino vs Barefaced vs Vanderkley - New cab decisions
Wolverinebass replied to Wolverinebass's topic in Amps and Cabs
Sorry, I just reread this. I meant that the DI as it was fed into my Markbass cabs. The tweeters were on full blast and we're nowhere near as bright as Al Krows cab with the tweeter maxed and using the same settings. I didn't mean the Barefaced tweeter was harsh. It wasn't. Though, I was playing my Alembic through Si's rig. So possibly not a like for like test all round. -
Bergantino vs Barefaced vs Vanderkley - New cab decisions
Wolverinebass replied to Wolverinebass's topic in Amps and Cabs
Cheers Dan. I played one at the 2013 south east bash and remember I could almost walk in a 150 degree arc in front of it without the sound changing markedly. I was playing Si's rig with quite a lot of bass so it wasn't anywhere near the settings I would use, but it was very impressive. It's not just about clarity though. If you listened to the Sansamp DI from my 12 string it sounded like a buzzsaw with absolutely no low end. That wasn't what came out the speakers. When I tried Al Krow's Vanderkley, I did the same settings with the tweeter on full and it nearly took our heads off. Admittedly, there was still low end, but the treble was just as massively overpowering as the DI would have been. I'm quite torn with this. Plus at £1200 for a cab it makes it a distinctly difficult choice as they're all about the same price. Please, somebody say something definitive! 🤣 -
Bergantino vs Barefaced vs Vanderkley - New cab decisions
Wolverinebass replied to Wolverinebass's topic in Amps and Cabs
I am right in thinking that the Berg is more coloured than the Vanderkley with Barefaced being least coloured? When I asked Mark Vanderkley what was "flat" for the tweeter, he said it was "taste." I'd been running my Markbass cabs with the tweeters full on so nothing was cut, but I couldn't control the treble quite to my own taste. What does everyone think? Do the other 3 allow for this type of control? -
So, up for sale is my Markbass stack of 2x10 and 1x15 cabs. I've had these cabs a long time but both are in pretty much pristine condition with no rips to the carpet or other such things. They have been gigged, but not massively and have mainly been living in my smoke and pet free studio. These are the original B&C speakers and of course have been made in Italy. No trades. Straight sale as I'll be using the cash to replace them. I may consider splitting at £320 each, but I'd prefer selling in one go. Pickup only from my studio in SE London/NE Kent. I'm not shipping as the packaging has long since been recycled. You're welcome to try before you buy of course, just let me know and we can arrange a time.

Bergantino vs Barefaced vs Vanderkley - New cab decisions
Wolverinebass replied to Wolverinebass's topic in Amps and Cabs
To clarify, when I said 12 and 8 string basses, they're Kings X, Cheap Trick variety (triple and double coursed 4 strings), not the super low E to whatever you'd tune up to. I won't be tuning any lower than drop C in all likelihood drop D being typical of this moment in time, so the massive bass extension is less of an issue than the treble. -
So, after many moons using Markbass, I think it's time for a change and I'll be putting my stack up for sale to free up some funds. Thread to appear later today. So, What I'm after is a 2x12 one cab solution like most people it would seem. Preferably light (naturally) with as faithful a response as you can get. In an ideal world, what I want is the signal which goes in sounds exactly like what comes out. I appreciate that's not possible, so I've settled on the 3 brands above as possibilities. As they all cost about the same, I'm not bothered by that aspect of the equation. So with this in mind, I come to 3 choices - Bergantino HDN212, Barefaced Big Twin 2 and Vanderkley 212LNT. From my own point of view they each have their plus and minus points. Bergantino (it was a CN212 I'm basing this on) had a very pronounced low mid profile and maybe less treble extension? This was in the cab shootout as played by Lozz at the SE bash a couple of years ago. My thoughts on Barefaced are of the cosmetic variety and I just don't dig on the looks. Yes, I'm that shallow and I admit it. I played a prototype one at the SE bash in 2013, and thought the dispersion was great, but not using anything that resembled my own settings it was difficult to gauge quite how it was relative to me. Lastly Vanderkley. I've heard that some think they're a bit bright. Is that accepted wisdom? Having played Al Krow's 2x10 I was very impressed. I also had a go on another 2x10 at last year's SE bash. Very loud. The treble extension is very important to me as I quite often play 12 or 8 string basses, which are distorted in the upper edge for more bite. That is the acid test for me and indeed my own unique criteria which probably nobody on the forum will look at as something they would use to subjectively measure something. I can't really try before I buy and I won't have any gigs for some months due to holidays of the various bands I'm in. I'm just wanting the switcheroo to happen before everything kicks off again. I appreciate that everyone will have a tendency to recommend their own stuff, however, has anyone moved between all or some of these? Thoughts? Opinions? Missed anything? All advice is welcome.

I've tried it straight into a power amp. You'll be fine. Mine killed.

Darkglass, if you're reading this, something with presets. Midi compatability preferably. Do this and you'll rule the world.

Is Rickenbacker a dirty word..........?

By who? I'm really interested as it looks great. Pm me if you don't want the Ric police to see. -

Who made that? Looks rather nice. Is it all Rick parts? -
After not playing odd timings since being a kid learning piano, 15 years ago a band I was in had a song with a bit in 7/8. Well, that was it. I progressively (see what I did there?!!) moved further into it until I now find I almost can't play in 4/4 now as I feel constrained. However as for advice, I'd say listen to the melodic instruments. Guitar preferably. Don't count, just feel the pulse. Once you get it, it'll be a massive new string to your bow. Enjoy!

Is Rickenbacker a dirty word..........?
Wolverinebass replied to Chewie's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, I appreciate that fact. Your post was worded in a way that suggested genuine ric adverts on gumtree were getting pulled, hence my comment. Clearly Mr Hall is a tool and I'd imagine that were it someone else running the company, maybe a bit more "live and let live" might ensue. Most of the negativity associated with the brand appears to be interchangeable with him personally. I can see them going the same way as Gibson as the parallels are kind of obvious. Not as many people play them these days? Insane price hikes? Idiot CEO? All are ticked. Certainly, I'm a bit out of the loop of counter culture with the sort of music I do, but I am thinking they're well down the pecking order of current mainstream bands using them. I'm sure others with more knowledge will correct me! -

So they're now actively going after people selling 2nd hand ones not just fakes? That's a different level of mental. -

Unless you're left handed, they're about £2100 new. Go second hand then they don't get your money and you can flog it probably for what you paid for it if you hate it. -
Please tell me why I should avoid getting a Rickenbacker!
Wolverinebass replied to Al Krow's topic in Bass Guitars
I thought about getting a fake, then I realised that went against my artistic principles. I think I've been lucky in getting a good one as quite a few of the ones I've played previously, weren't great at all. -

Here we go. It's really good fun. Did the stereo recording the other day. Great sound. Lots of bite. -

Funnily enough, I actually went to the dark side and got one the other day. Neck is quite shallow in comparison to others I've played, but my only gripe is the bridge won't let me get the action quite as supernaturally low as I would like. So far nothing has fallen off or failed so I guess I'm lucky that I've got one that isn't a "Friday special." -
Of course they can. However raw active bass generally sounds crap which is why I won't agree to it. Furthermore, ever heard an Alembic pre DI'd then cut at 800hz? No? You shouldn't want to either. However, my general disdain for the approach of some live sound engineer's is something for another thread. Using effects? Oh well, pity that won't get transmitted to the audience then. In other news, I'm considering new cabs and Bass Direct are in the running to get my cash. As you were.
-
Lucky you. The number of times I've got into "heated debate" about my refusal to do that is almost beyond counting. I'll never, ever give the sound guy a pre eq so that they can cut off anything over 1khz and turn my tone into sludge. Happened a few times many years ago. Never again.

Every single Dingwall I've ever played has been amazing. I was sceptical on the fanned frets but after playing one I realised it didn't make any difference to me at all.

To add a slightly different view of the Peavey ipr1600. I had one in my bass rig. There was no way it was 600w per side. The thing clipped very, very early. 300w, yeah, but not 600w. Rather frustratingly, it broke twice. Peavey fixed it and the 2nd time they put in the board from the 2nd generation of them. I didn't trust it for my rig so it now powers the PA in my studio. The other thing that grated was it has a switch on the back to high pass the signal at 120hz. Even with it off, I felt like normal wasn't that much lower. The difference was very apparent when tons of bass was added in when I got my Yamaha power amp. My rig is midi controlled so it was the same settings. I might have just been unlucky, but it was quite irritating at the time. I hasten to say that I haven't had any problems since they gave me the updated board and that's 3 years ago or so.

Yeah. I like everything being slightly quieter.

I used to use the 15s. Nowadays, I use the 27s. They're brilliant and totally worth the money.
