1.
Am I missing something or does the Electric Wood website make no mention of nut width and other spec?
No, it doesn't. That's because you can get the neck profiled to your taste should you wish. On a 4 string it's 42mm nut as standard as I asked Paul about that and neck depth and width before ordering. On the other hand, it would be useful for people to not have to ask.
 2.
I don't think Harkte "aren't trying" with the LH, it has a very specific design goal in mind and IMO meets it perfectly.
Yeah, it does meet a specific brief and it's one which I don't like due to the tonal inflexibility. So the issue is mine for that. However, I think when you compare class D products as a whole, the TX is going to be near the bottom due to it not being very loud. If one were cynical, one might say they went for the cheapest power module to keep the cost down as opposed to digging in and making something good. Like, arguably the LH series has a cheap pre-amp. That's my reason for saying they're not trying. I think were they to do the HA pre-amp as a midi controllable graphic eq with a 1000W power supply, I'd dig on that, but they won't because they're making things for a price rather than quality like the recent darkglass amp which would appear to utterly kill. But, of course, you're quite right about the LH series, it must work for someone or they wouldn't sell any.
 3.
I think that's a bit unfair on the LH series, it is a stonkingly good simple amp. As with all things there are plenty of people who like and plenty who don't but I don't think it falls into the Kilo or TX category
Quite possibly I'm being harsh. I suppose it's because I sculpt my tone a lot and I couldn't get to it with that amp and I found it infuriating. Like most, I know my basses and cabs well enough to get what I want as long there is a flat setting as a minimum. I tried for 2 afternoons with my Alembic and just wasn't happy with it. Hence, my somewhat scathing review as I feel Hartke can do so much better and they're just not trying to. Merely my experience though. I still think my ha5500 is one of the best amps I've ever played though. Pity they've not done anything as good for almost a decade.
 4. This thread is another sad example of Hartke screwing up big time. Firstly, we had the Kilo announced and then delayed for 3 years until release. Worse still, it had no flat position on the amp as the preshape couldn't be turned off. Idiocy. That's before we get into reported reliability problems.... Then we get the LH series. I mean, come on!! Try a little here! Rubbish. Again, no flat position for the eq and I found no position that I could get the upper mid response that I like because although powerful, the amps were very inflexible tonally with a mid scoop unless you ran the amp 2,10,2. Who's going to do that?!! Now we get to this. Underpowered TC Electronics lookalike nonsense. Why didn't they just take the pre-amp from the HA series and splat it in with a better power module? There you go Hartke, sort it out. It doesn't take much to figure out that they are on borrowed time. Such a pity, but I believe that they will soon be joining other bass amp manufacturers in the sky like SWR did and people will say "they used to make good stuff back in the day..."
 5.
+1 on this too. My formerly passive Aria SB700 has an active buffer preamp (the now defunct but nonetheles wonderful Hollis GX-10) added into the circuit. It just makes the whole bass sound rather more "present" without changing the actual tonality of the bass. And both volume and tone act as standard passive controls. Still it brings an already great sounding bass to life. In fact, at the SE Bass Bash, when Wolverinebass tried it out he was quite befuddled at its snap and clarity of tone until I confessed the mod to him...
That's an evil bass. Sounded fantastic as well, hence why I was curious as I was sure that model was passive and it didn't sound like one as it had much more snap. It still weighed enough to anchor the QE2 though. Ha!
 6.
A pal has a Subway and it's a wonderful little head, but the retail prices for Mesa in the UK are a scandal. I'm not knocking Mesa, but their UK importer appears to be taking the p***. US retail price for a Subway 800 is around 700 bucks (and that's including US sales tax - check out a few online ad's from dealers in the US). So why is it the best part of 900 quid here? By comparison, the Genzler Magellan, which costs similar to the Subway in the States, retails for £650 here. Seems to me the prices here for Mesa kit here are more to do with the margins of whoever imports the brand into the UK. They must be slapping on a serious mark-up, I reckon.
I concur completely. It's a joke. Just like Tech 21 pricing in the UK. The importer is scalping us. $1800 for a Dug Pinnick amp translates to a pre referendum (just so nobody points out that the pound is now worth 3 cents!) a whopping £2200. Sod. Off. I'm not playing ball with this crap. Allowing for VAT and shipping are they really trying to say that it should cost almost 50% more here?! The distribution for Mesa must be of the same mindset. Take price in dollars, change currency symbol to pounds, add at least 300 to the number you have and that's the UK price. Laughable.

Maybe that's what could happen next year, we see how many of the exhibitors and manufacturers we could annoy by inviting and then everyone saying that they don't use their products.

 11.
On the subject of packing... I'm not sure the packing was quite satisfactory TBH. It *was* wrapped in a single sheet of 'big bubble' wrap. However the rest of the box was filled with just loosely rolled brown paper. Clearly it wasn't enough to prevent damage of the kind it sustained. However, in Wounded Paws defence, it looked like a really hard impact. I'm not sure any reasonable amount of packing would have saved the day. Only a completely over the top case with polystyrene corners and lots of bubble wrap would have slowed the impact to a level where the insides weren't torn by their own weight and impetus... Still, onwards and upwards! 😎
Did you have any joy in getting this sorted out? Am really curious to know in light of possbly taking the plunge myself....
 12.
Hi bass players and prog fans of the world! My friend Jonno sent me a link to this forum post and I chuckled to myself a bit... Jonno was the manager for Guitarworks in Reading before it sadly closed. He's also the bassist in my band 'Heights'. A proggy three piece from Reading. www.facebook.com/heightsuk My other band is Tesseract (I play drums). Not that it particularly matters but no one in Tess' lived in Reading (apart from me) nor did they work at Guitarworks. However, a few talented guys from local bands did work there, including Josh Middleton from Sylosis! Huge shame that place closed down really.
Just want to say, you were fantastic at Koko in February. One of the best gigs I've ever seen. Looking forward to the next Tesseract album, whenever that might be.
 13. Nearly 6 months on, I hasten to say I've still not found any band in the progressive metal genre that is advertising. It's pointless. There was one band I liked the sound of, but I'm not doing a 3 guitar band, or even a 2 quite frankly. Frankly, this is depressing in the extreme for me as its making me realise that I'll probably never play live again. I'm not ever going to be interested in covers and I want to be challenged creatively. Alas, everyone has formed indie bands starting with "the" and relocated to Horton to wear drainpipe jeans. Plus, I'm in my mid/late 30's now so age has become more of a factor. Even if my own definition of "progressive" is narrow, I just don't believe it when folk say there's a load of bands looking as they just don't exist.
 14.
Not sure about the piano but there is Alaska studio right opposite Waterloo station. Very central. Might be worth giving them a call.
They're grotesquely expensive. Beat up crap gear as well and where I had the "privelige" of playing through a peavey head which was only 2 years younger than me. Jog on, I'd never go back there.
 15.
Just to be clear we don't set the prices in Europe and actually make less money on our product shipped there. There are import duties, the cost of shipping from the states and VAT that our European Distributors have to pass on to the consumer. They in turn have to ship to dealers which adds additional cost. For some perspective, I've had a couple of Lehle pedals. My Dual SGoS costs $349 US here. Thomann sells it for 238 Euros which is $269 US.
Yeah, fair enough about import tax and VAT, but are you actually trying to justify the fact that your Dug Pinnick amp is $1800 in the US and £2200 over here?!! When I worked that out before brexit I grant you that made it £900 more expensive over here. So much so that I could fly to New York, pick one up from your factory and still have change for a transformer with cash left over when I got back. Which is all a great pity as you make really good gear. I would have thought you'd have some control of prices though.
 16. Adam Clayton was actually one of the reasons I play bass. However, I've had no time for him as a player for a long time. The reason being is simple. Everything post 1997 has been immensely boring. Look at everything up to Pop and there are a few moments here and there that are interesting. After that, there aren't any. I don't hate him for that at all. I'm just disappointed and it's very difficult to reconcile this apparent lack of effort to someone who wrote New Year's Day or Lemon. Maybe it's just that U2's output since then I haven't liked at all, but that's probably just a component of it. However, there are plenty of people who are much more suitable for derision as being utterly talentless and have made truckloads of cash. To name but 2, Paul McGuigan (formerly of Oasis), a man so proficient at bass that he couldn't actually play the songs and Noel Gallagher plays bass on Definitely Maybe. How rubbish must you be to not be able to play that?!! Secondly, Guy Berryman of Coldplay. I regard him as Adam Clayton's talentless nephew. The band's are kind of similar, but Berryman has never played anything even remotely interesting. Nor will he ever do so. I don't hate either of these guys, but I do think that they are without imagination. Which to me is quite depressing that they've got so far on that basis.
It's also that the one stipulation I have been given is that it has got to be red - otherwise heaven knows what I'd have come up with You can never tell until you start staining these things for real, but this is more like the shade it will come out:
Where do we place our orders?!!
 18. How much is this costing?!! I bet lots of folk on the forum would be interested in getting in on this. I don't even like Gibsons and I'd be up for this. Plus it'd beat paying £6500 for the equivalent EB3 Warwick copy.
 19. Will be along. I guess as Paul Herman will be there I should bring my Wal Mark2!! Should be fun.
 20.
It's ok for a classical quintet to use music stands. The likes of SikTh, Periphery, Meshuggah and other bands that are playing arguably as complex music, not so.
There is a reason for this. An orchestra is playing something that they have had no hand in writing. If you're doing a dep gig with ludicrously short notice then stands are acceptable too as neither of these scenarios are the fault of the performer. However, if Misha Mansoor went onstage with a stand, my respect for him would end and I'd bottle him. Immediately. I would then leave the venue and go home and burn my Periphery albums. Why you ask? Because he wrote the songs. I don't care how technical they are (I've been auditioned for bands by way of an instrumental Periphery song or even Meshuggah) if I can play them without charts or even vocal cues then the folk who wrote them can too. Plus in the case of a djent or progressive metal band you'd just look like a bellend going onstage with a stand. None of this is to say that I can't read music of course, as I can and could do a sight reading gig if I had to, it's just I consider for the medium I play in and write in, it's just wrong and I'd never be given sheet music.
 21.
Well... This is how it's gone.. amp arrived early this week after delays in customs, and Parcelfarce didn't send me the slip to say they'd got it. I had to phone around and find the depot which had it, pay them the customs charge and wait for them to deliver it. And when I unpacked it... f***ed! As soon as I unpacked it, I knew. I could hear some loose bits inside the case rattling around. Inspecting the case I found a shiny corner, indicative of an impact. One of the 'handles was damaged and bent inwards a few degrees too. Opened the bottom of the case... Found a loose IC chip, and a piece of plastic which would have been a circuit board mounting clip. And the circuit board was thusly not attached to the case... Disappointed. So the result is that I've had to send it back. The shipping back to Canada has cost me another £66 now. Plus a £30 customs charge, and at the moment, I have no amp. Preston, the guy at wounded Paw has agreed to pay for the return shipping, but I haven't heard back from him about how he intends to do this yet... And no doubt, when it's replacement arrives I will get hit for customs AGAIN! Until I get my working amp, I suggest you hold off on purchases. This is going to be a test of Wounded Paws customer service, I think.
That sucks big time. I presume that this damage was despite the amp being bubble wrapped and packaged within an inch of it's life? I'd ask for the shipping and tax back myself otherwise you'll have paid for the amp almost 1.5 times over once the VAT and stuff is taken on board. If it's insured then surely he's not losing money by refunding you at least the shipping? Refunding the tax as an act of good faith in truth would be nice and certainly put a line in the sand for customer service as it were. Hope it gets sorted for you squire. Keep us all posted.
 22. I'd be having one of those as a pre-amp only. Sounds devastating. Sound clips when you get it please just to feed some gas. The only thing that would make it perfect would be for all the knobs to be midi controllable with patch changes. However, one can dare to dream....
 23.
How do you rate it friend?
I think it's great. Bear in mind it's mono of course. I think as with all things it depends how you want to use it. How I use mine is that I send the treble end to a Digitech 2120 for distortion and effects above about 400Hz. In the main, I tend to use this most for 12 and 8 string basses to really get the best of the high end. I then re-combine it back to mono with a mix box that Max at SFX made for me. I don't change the crossover point much. I think the advantage it has over the Behringer unit is that it's 1/4 inch input jacks and it's really small. The Behringer will have more control over the frequency split, but it's a rack and you might not want that? Plus it's xlr input and outputs which is a pain. I would imagine that if you're using the crossover in a loop as I am, possibly the Behringer will be better for the most control if it's something that you are going to change a lot, but I doubt that you'll change it much though once you've found a point you like. If you're using it on a pedalboard with the bass signal before the amp, I'd get the Rolls due to the smaller footprint. Hope that helps.
 24.
The dudes on talkbass recommended me this http://www.rolls.com/product.php?pid=SX21 Looks PERFECT for me but it's only available in the US and I need a quick fix Any UK alternatives to this bad boy???
I use one. You can get it off thomann.
 25.
1000W not enough then ?
I wouldn't be using it bridged at 8 ohms. 500W at 4 ohms is an absolute minimum for me and my current Yamaha power amp is more than that anyway, hence why I'd like a marginal amount of more power for headroom if it's an upgrade, if you see my point.
