Valve Amp (Orange/Matamp) into a Barefaced Compact
umph replied to danweb22's topic in Amps and Cabs
Matamp GT200 will be enough into a Compact. The Orange has a theme of sounding amazing if its your first big valve amp. They aren;t even close to a Matamp. The output is the same as long as the impedance switch is in the right place, but there are a few accounts of the Orange AD200 not making its stated output when tested, might have beeen fixed on the new ones though.
nah they use a transformer with the wrong primary so it only does about 160W -
Wasnt having a pop . What I meant was most self build amp projects go for the logical in one end and out the other approach, which kinda makes sense. Like I said, whatever works for you.
haha sorry didn't mean for it to sound grumpy. Yeah i prefer it that way, looks better and is easier to keep all the noisey bits away from the input -
Bit unconventional having trannies at opposite ends, used to seeing them close and the signal path going from one end of the chassis to the other. Still, whatever works for you. Looks a nice job . Were the transformers and chassis easy to come across ? I've never seen any advertised anywhere.
Look at an amp thats not a marshall or a fender, they're pretty much all laid out like how i've got it. Chassis was ebay and i drilled it all out myself and transformers were from a chap i know -
SS rectifier makes sense if you're going for no sag. 12.6v shouldn't make any difference with DC if it's properly regulated and filtered, but can't hurt I guess as a little ripple will probably creep through.
Yeah the preamp heaters are all in series so it's easier to run them at 12.6v to. -
Cool project. Valve rectifier? What pream tubes? Why 12.6v heaters? Some serious voltages to get KT88s singing. ~600v on the plates? Eek!
Nah keeping it SS The extra bases are there if i fancy turning it into a 200W. 12.6v heaters use half the current and thus produce less noise, although it doesn't make to much difference with dc. in regards to transformers, theres enough seperation for it not to cause an issue, only really matters if you have them right next to each other. Having one facing the other direction would mean more noise due to the magnetic field messing with the valves. -
Is looking good, have you taken this out of another amp or put bits and pieces together? Either way it looks good. How did you get the depth to work in terms of selecting the frequency?
nah it's all parts i've got lying around. Depth control is just an rc filter so wasn't to hard to work out. Simple but effective. -
Thats one good looking bass! love the neck end bit

either than or donate it to my new studio ;D
Looks well thought out! I'm curious about the tone stack - is it based on a James/Baxandall type or something else?
tis the james stack centred around 600Hz. i may still change it for an active bax though -
That's looking very promising. Gotta love that iron! How about calling it the 'Hernia 100'?
Haha, it's not that heavy, it's still an easy one handed lift at this stage. The iron is awesome though, flat down to 20Hz, which is pretty brutal. No idea about pricing yet, i'll have to work it out after i've found someone who can do me faceplates / enclosures. Edit, yeah the roost is coming down with me on friday for some doom. -

Also heres a picture of the final prototype in a roost case, on top of my cabs of doom for good measure! -
Right as some of you may know i'm a total amp nerd and i've been planning to start building amps etc. for a long time now. Basically been putting off finalizing things though because i've never been quite happy with the design and i've yet to think of a good name and design a logo for it. Think i've got to a stage where i'm happy with the design though! Specs so far on the head. Low / high gain inputs (read active / passive) 5 controls (depth / gain / bass / treble / master) Depth controls the bass roll off frequency - great for tightening things up Gain control is spread over 2 gain stages, making it pretty easy to dail in just the right amount of grind. Preamp heaters ran off seperate 12.6v dc supply, to keep things low noise. Speakon outs for 4 / 8 / 16 ohms. 600 ohm balanced, post OT transformer balanced line out (subject to tweaking till i find what sounds best) Running this one with a pair of kt88's in tetrode mode so it should be good for 100 - 120 watts. Totally over speced power supply, to avoid sag and keep the massive low end. Transformers hand wound in nottingham to HIFI quality. There are probably some things i've left out so feel free to ask me. Here are some shots of the very slow progress, although you can expect to see more happening soon! chassis lay out before drilling. everything drilled and fixed in. start of wiring, looks bit of a mess atm but should be alot better once everythings tidied up!

Reissue Mullards - Any one know / have experience of these?
umph replied to mattjones_81's topic in Amps and Cabs
they cost more than the old mullards, think they're made in russia to. -
What's the hell's going on? From the pics it looks like there's no gravity in your house. And is your cat a jeweller, or what?
my cat is a sultan and has very high class tastes. Also i'm pretty terrible at photography haha. @roonjuice i could maybe be persuaded to part with it, did you have an offer in mind?

Bit of fun in photoshop with a laney cab and TB500.

who you getting to do your badge? -
Marshall cab is gone, heres a link to the selmer tv12 - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140687333417?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1558.l2649 In great nick. havn't got any pictures of the tv15 just yet, totally need a different speaker for it since i realised the one in it is non original and the wrong impedence. Obviously i can do this for a bit less minus the speaker. The only selmer PA left atm is the one that needs the PT rewinding. Can do this one for pretty cheap if anyones intrested, it's one of the earlier metal back sv selmers.
The SVT is a great amp, but, virtually the same sound can be obtained with your PF500 by using a DHA (Dave Hall Amps) VT1 pedal. It warms up the sound to that classic "just breaking up" sound that valve Ampegs such as the SVT have. I had this set-up for a while, and it was very authentic, but without the backache. In this setup were a Barefaced Compact & Midget, and have to say, they are very good at putting out what you put in - so if Ampeg sound goes in, it comes out uncoloured. The buzz about the Super 12 seems very good at the minute, so worth checking out.
Don't really agree with that. Don't personally like svt's that much but thats maybe because i've had to service some of them
Not entirely. Some years back when I was much more active building amps we had a debate about this on 18watt.com. I had a few pairs of valves sitting around and decided to experiment using liquid nitrogen that was available at work. The first valves I tried were some Sovtek 6L6s which were a bit dull sounding. Both valves from the pair sounded similar, so I marked one up and treated it, first freezing to -80'c, the immersing in LN2 for a couple of days in a small volume dewar vessel, which was allowed to run dry and gradually warm up (slow warming is part of the annealing process). To test whether the difference was real or not I had my wife swap various valves around in a single ended amp I'd made while I was out of the room, and to make it a little more fun, we included an EL34 and a 6CA7 too, along with the pair of 6L6s. In each case I was able to identify which valve was which, and differentiate the cryo treated 6L6 from the other as well as the EL34 and 6CA7. What difference did it make? In each case, and with every valve I treated afterward, it made the valve a bit brighter and a bit more open, and the effect remained after several hours of use. Some valves were affected more than others, with the biggest difference in the 6L6s and EL34s I tried, very little difference in some Ei EL84s, National 12AT7s and Sovtek 12AX7s. IMO the value is in brightening a dull valve, if that is a problem for you, but it will not make a modern valve sound like a NOS Mullard contrary to some claims. Larger power valves seemed to benefit more than small valves. One other thing was interesting: none of the nay-sayers were willing to accept that a difference was possible, and none of the guys in the UK were willing to take part in a blind controlled study where they tried valves before (to check a pair sounded the same) sent them to me for treatment & I sent them back for re-testing. edit for spelling.
Did you do any measurements with gear?
-
cryo treatment is snake oil. theres been a resurgance in valve popularity lately so i think they'll be sticking round for a while yet. Can't imagine neo will be vanishing either

you got a new face panel for it and got ridda the green? how rude
