www.madamp.biz BP1Mk1 Kit The BP1Mk1 is a pure tube bass preamp in a 19" enclosure with the following features: classic pure tube design with a wide range of sounds Switchable input sensitivity, from clean to crunch with gain and volume control active three band EQ with switchable bass and treble boost Mute switch and output for tuner (active, when preamp is muted) Kit with 19" enclosure (completely drilled and printed, tubes, and all electronical and mechanical parts Additional parts like Knobs are available This is the inside view of the amp, all parts besides the knobs are included in the kit. Soundsamples Samples coming soon Anyone made one of these preamps? looks like a Alembic/Trace ellliot preamp twin ECC83 with active 3 band EQ in a 1U rack looks really cool and an easy solder. I think I could do a better of job of helicoiling the wires though!!!! Cheers D
suprised it's actually active! Not the best implementation of it though. Could really do with being driven by a cathode follower and not having the gain infront of it, kinda negates the tonestack. nice to see something different though
On the subject of post power amp DIs, does anyone feel there's much benefit of this approach over taking a line out after the preamp if the amp is being played pretty much clean? I'm considering building a box using this schematic to use in between my head (a 100 watt Carlsbro) and speaker. This would be used when PA reinforcement is required, or possibly for recording if I like the sound. Though I could also use a standard DI box from the echo send (preamp out) of my amp.
the big power amp valves add nice harmonics and distortion and i like the way pentodes compress things to, also have to take distortion added by the transformer and frequency limiting into account to. Whether you'll be able to hear much difference though is anyones guess since they're all very minimal

look into the shuguang gekt88s

it's at the same point dark stars are still evading me! i really want to plug this in
Interesting stuff bheys. After considering the comments, I have started ordering bits to make a Firezog Line out box. It will incorporate a switch to shut the speaker off and a 100w 8ohm dummy load so I don't fry the thing! I'm not in to spending loads of money of stuff if I could actually make cheaper while learning about it. Will post up if/when I get it working!
make sure you had an adaquet heat sink for the dummy load a 100W resistor is only rated at about 25watts without a heatsink and fan
+1 on the Matamp, looks like an extension cab for the guitar combo, nice piece. Not many manufacturers bothered to paint inside their cabs too. Edit, I did initially think Hiwatt and looking close I think it's a Hiwatt, notice the white piping over the sides, Matamps go around the cab and the Hiwatt like yours goes across the top into the front.
i did to, they didn't use goodmans though did they? also didn't use that colour. I still think matamp

looks like an older matamp
I too love a tech war but the truth is that both are completely right. Bill's method will give you a post fade post tone shaped output. A DI box in the speaker line gives you the shaping caused by the output stages, which is the bit of the valve sound we still can't quite capture any other way but the speaker introduces a whole other level of distortion/sound shaping. It all depends upon what you want: clean and you DI before the amp, clean but with you retaining tone shaping, go for the BFM method, DI off the speaker lead and you get the valve distortion and tone settings. Mic' up and you get total control at the expense of a lot more fiddling and the expense of a mic. I'd go for the DI box personally, just because I don't like the idea of fiddling too much with classic old amps and I'm happy for an engineer to fiddle with my sound. That's just personal preference though.
Personally my ideal solution would to be to get the transformer rewound with a 600ohm balanced line out. Isn't cheap though and can make for a super hot output if not attenuated properly

8x10 is alot louder than a 1x15 so you wont get any sonic benefits

also, http://www.charlestongolf.com/lineout/ http://web.archive.org/web/20050627183340/...ond/Firezog.gif hope these are useful, and i'd also make sure the dummy load is rated for atleast 50 continous watts.
Power stage coloration is minimal, especially when compared to that of the speaker. If coloration is what you're trying to capture you need a mic.
i disagree, the coloration of power valves is worth capturing, the added harmonics and compression of power pentodes/tetrodes is very different to that of the smaller triodes and that coupled with the limited response and added distortion of the power transformer gives a notable difference that gives even more noticible as you crank it, especially with an amp like the one the OP is using.
Have a good tech install an XLR out. He only has to tap both sides of the inverter stage, capacitor isolated and resistor padded, with an output level pot for good measure. You probably don't understand a word of that, a good techie will.
not sure that'd be ideal, most splitters aren't to well balanced. I'd much rather just stick a voltage divider on the output and a transformer if you want the balanced output
Nice one and thanks for the avice.Would love to get a new pod but finances dictate I need to make the most of what i've got.I desperatley need a a svt 810-e tho. Gonna sell all my comics and all my G1 transformers and all my vynil to get one. Any idea on how much a secon hand one is.I aint bothered about my back or having a new one because after its been thrown in the van it'll look beat up.
why do you need an 810? there are much better cabs on the market that'd probably do a better job of what your after!
Is this because you like how it sounds or because you have experimented and make it to sound how you like. I don't understand this comment.
I've obviously experimented, i'm not gonna make gear i don't like haha. You seem to be putting across a kind've vibe that insinuates you think people who fuss about their gear are inferior.
-
I see you are selling some pickups. Are you one of these people still searching for that elusive "Tone"?
i build all my own gear so not really searching for it since all my stuff does sounds i like and i'm pretty happy with it. No need to be a dick about people enjoying finding the sound in their head.
-
i'm bored of these threads, unfortunatly different gear does effect how you sound and unfortunatly punters tend to like it more if it sounds more pleasing to the ears.
Bitten the bullet and bought a MAG600, which I intend to use (for now) into the pair of 15" cabs. The intention is to build a replica cab of the Acoustic and use the drivers from these. For bigger gigs I'll use both amps and both cabs. Then next year, I'll be looking at a Barefaced!
still should've just respeakered the acoustic, the increase in volume would have been much greater than buying the new head
All original condition valve 1967 75 watts valve head. A superb vintage amplifier. Very rare and unique. Must be great for recording. £600.
you could do with a bit more information than that, ie valve line up, output impedances.
I fitted a 3 way toggle switch to my p-bass which switched in 3 different caps to the tone pot. This works in a similar way to the 'varitone' arrangement. the result - slightly more treble cut on a bass that sounded pretty dark anyway as well as a light difference in ramp to the tone pot. Conclusion: insignificant change in tonal quality but it was worth 1/2 an hour with a soldering iron to try it out. I never use it.
proper varitone is a bit different to using caps to shunt high frequencys to ground
Problem with feeding a 4x10 and a 2x10 with the same impedance from the same amp is you are stuck with the upper limit of the 2x10, they'll both get the same power, but the 2x10 will only deal with half, and the 4x10 will be louder, potentiall drowning out the sounds of the 2x10 complaining. Better off with a 16 ohm 2x10 so each speaker gets the same.
power is equally distributed between all speakers, so it'll be seeing a third of the total power and the 4 be 10 2 thirds

Is there something wrong with me for wanting these?!

whats wrong with the jet king? they're great basses -
I had considered buying a more powerful head, more efficient speakers etc but to be honest, I was being a cheapskate and trying to use stuff I already have! The Power amp I have is a very basic Thomann job, so I don't think it has a parallel switch or anything. Keep the suggestions coming though chaps!
seriously i've got a 1X15 with a basslite that blew the acoustic out of the water volume wise, so if you put a pair of those into your cab it'll turn into an absolute monster and destroy your guitars volume wise, you may need to retune the port though for best results
