not a fan of that lead dress especially for the price point you'll be charging for a b-15 reissue
100W at that voltage according to the mullard data I have here, though I bow to your knowledge of how they are set up in the Sound City. I just remember what I measured into a dummy load because it surprised me so much at the time. This was in 1973 so they may have made changes since then. The transformers will give less current when they are warm. What is more important is whether you can get replacements. I have had to replace the output transformer on one of these long ago and no amp is completely bomb proof. I don't repair valve stuff any more so I've no idea about current availability but if parts are a problem then it is worth knowing before you part with any cash. I'm hoping someone can say it's no problem (unless it is) so this guy can make a good choice. Still it is nice to look at an old friend. All those lovely valves...
they're normally ran at 500v in UL which is 25w a piece. They definatly do more than the rated wattage though. absolutely great amps. Normally it's a case of a rewind if one goes since replacement ones of the same spec are hard to come by and expensive. Rewinds aren't to expensive and they shouldn't go unless you do something stupid like constantly turning the amp on without a load

download winisd for port tuning it's fairly straight forward to work out and i'd make the cab as tall as you want! Make sure you line the drivers vertically aswell to improve dispertion since they'll be driving the high end.

justin chancellor doesn't use his very often. They're lots of clones out there his is a jumbo one i think though so you might be worth looking at big muffs or the coloursound bass fuzz
Yep, that's absolutely fair It is always difficult to know how techie to be. Using decibels rather than watts is better because it allows for the efficiency of the speaker but this still doesn't allow for the difference in sensitivity to different frequencies. I've tried to deal with these issues in my article a bit. Each EL34 will dissipate 50W and depending on the exact circuit details and bias settings you will get more than 120W. The limit is the transformers which will warm up and limit the power if you crank up for long periods. Hence the 120W rating, I guess. It is 40 years nearly since I took one of these babies apart however so take everything I say in that light. I think it will be loud enough and if it isn't you need to look at your speakers. My worry would be about reliability and the availability of spares. How old is this amp and how much will it cost?
The transformers are heavily overrated they are partridge afterall! You'll get 50w from a PAIR of el34's not each one unless your running them with 800v on the plate and 300 on the screens which the soundcity isn't.
Good, glad everyone isn't irritated by it! Maybe it's the contrary Mary in me, but rapid range expansion and tailoring identical cabs to different boot dimensions smacks of an inability to commit to a design philosophy. If it's portable, make it small and light. If it isn't, make it huge and out of mammoth tusk, don't hedge your bets and cover everything. I want them to say "This! THIS is the cab for you! It's so good we've locked the designer inside his own ass so that if he tells anyone else how to make it they won't believe him! You cannot get a better cab. Fact " ... "what's that? A quadrilatrophobe? Oh, well how about this triangular version? No really, it's just as good, ignore my previous conviction." Having said that my nord player just bought the cmd121p, so perhaps we could get matching NY extensions..........hmmm
More like they cant be arsed to do the product research so just flung a bunch into the market to see what does best and then they'll produce more of those.
I think most people would know that a watt is a watt regardless of the amp. Especially after Alex Clabers posts on the topic.
a watt is a watt, but compression, different harmonics etc all give the illusion of it being louder. Also the difference between 150watts and 300watts isn't that huge
Hello! I play in a vey loud band, two guitarists who love to turn up and a drummer who hits harder than David Haye. I'm looking at getting an all valve head, the Sound City b120 in the FS has interested me. However, i'm worried that the 120 all valve watts wont be loud enough! I'm currently playing through a Trace AH300SMX which to be honest never goes up more than half way! Is there anyone that can help me in my little predicament who may have been in the same situation before? is 120 all valve watts gonna be enough for my needs? will be played through an ampeg svt410hlf
As i said before these amps totally bring the doom, if you're having problems with headroom you're doing it wrong. As i said to you you have to be careful with the eq as it can lead to phasing problems and sound like the amp isn't very loud.

personally i'd get in touch with wizard pick ups
No pain, no gain! Think of it this way, you don't need a gym membership, the average membership is £20 a month, times that by 12 months - £240, there's some tubes, maintainance sorted ... I have to justify it some how!
more is more and more is more awesome.
83s are fine if the maker designs the amp correctly. It's not necessary (or even desirable) to make a valve produce all of its gain, and it can still be attenuated afterward to prevent distortion in the next stage. And multiple non-distorting stages can add a very pleasant compression. Having said that, I like the tone of 12AU7s in some (guitar) amps, and the reduced overdrive doesn't do any harm at all.
83's do work but they're high gain rather than high current like the 82 which isn't ideal for driving valves cleanly up to their full power, saying that though 84's don't need a huge amount of grid current to get up to full voltage.

5 watt valve amp > 50watt 8ohm resistor on a big heatsink > power amp. is what i'm doing except i've wired a 600ohm balanced output into the output transformer
I know there's already a million of these threads and I have read many already. Just got an orange terror bass 500w head with the intention of saving for a decent cab and practising at home through a cheap 1x15 (thanks to yorick) while the band is not gigging. I have read alot of good things about the barefaced stuff and I did have it in my head that the big one or super 12 might be what I'm after. I don't want to rush into buying a cab that I can't actually go to a shop and try first though so I was hoping for a few suggestions for other cabs to go with this head. My requirements are punchy and deep sounding as well as very loud (for the 500w going in). My bass really growls trough this head and I would like to keep that element of the sound intact. Definitely only want one cab but thanks to the oranges design it can be 8 or 4ohm. I was hung up on getting something lightweight but to be honest so long as it's a one man job moving it and it will go in the back of a car with back seats down I'm pretty flexible, was thinking of a good 4x10 maybe. Playing rock mostly on an ibanez btb. As for stuff I've tried already, didn't get on with the orange sp cabs and am not a huge fan of ashdown stuff either. I demoed this head through an ampeg 4x10 which was pretty nice but I didn't try and move it so it could weigh more than the moon for all I know -anyone tried getting one of these in and out of the back of a car on their own? Is it even possible? Budget is about £700, anything else new or second hand I should look out for at or less than that price? If anyone around derby kind of area has one of the barefaced cabs I mentioned and would be willing to let me try it I would be glad to hear from you. Gareth
i'd take a punt on the barefaced cabs, i'd say you really wont be disapointed.
