i hope your taking that in for a full service, that looks like its going to need a lot more work than just a transformer rewind.
Hi, Lots of effects sap tone in some way or other, so I'm wondering what folk do to prevent it? Only buy FX that really don't negatively affect tone? Use a blender/line-switcher/looper? Use two separate amps (one clean & one effected)? Send two separate clean & effected signals to the PA? Something else? Personally, I've been looking at sending two separate signals to our PA - one clean & one effected - by splitting the signal with a DI before the effects, but that'd leave me with just effected signal in my stage amp. So I've started looking at using a blender instead - that'd give both my stage amp and the PA mixer the same blended signal. Obviously this isn't an issue for guys who don't use effects . . . Thanks, Mark
put a pedal with a good buffer at the start of the chain.

from looking at that i think it sets the gain i couldn't be 100% without better pictures or a schematic though. The trim connects to pin 7 right? Turn it up if you want more gain turn it down if you want less, i think it will already have been set to a good compromise though.

i love the om sound. Shellac are worth checking out to

modern 6550's and kt88s are quite similar, personally i'd wack some shuguang or JJ kt88s in there and call it a day.
"changed the cathode resistors on the input for LEDs" Do LED's offer enough resistance? Seems really unusual to swap out resistors for LED's considering LED's themselves need resistors to stop them burning themselves out, although obviously they can be used to replace normal diodes. Either way, that recorder looks partly like a work of art, partly like a bugger to work with, nice to see something being repurposed though.
it's not about offering resistance its about making the cathode positive in regards to the grid and since red LEDS offer roughly a 1.6v drop it makes them ideal for biasing 12ax7's etc! You also get the cool effect of when you hit a loud note the Leds fade.

It's a collectors item, collectors items command high prices.
You don't count being on fire as a problem?
no that was because i was trying to run far to much current through one wasn't the pot at fault. Normally bad runs on pots are due to them being the wrong type you want LOG for volume and LIN for tone.
When you see 40+ year old fenders with the original pots, what make are they? I always use CTS & put in a switchcraft jack socket at the same time.
pots shouldn't really ever fail unless you do something stupid. I always used alpha pots and i've never had a problem with one even when i've set them on fire.

started on the reel to reel properly today it didn't really work out to well as mic preamp so i've decided to turn that into a completely seperate project the things i've changed to make it more guitar friendly are; changed the cathode resistors on the input for LEDs - much prefer the sound as they seem to be a little less sluggish in the lower frequencys when overdriven and provide a much more natural sound. upgraded main power cap to 220uf since old power cap was on the way out - rectifier doesn't seem to mind and it's got rid of the sag. upgraded size of cathode bypass cap on elc82 which really tightens up the overdrive on the output and reduces sag. I intend to replace this with a current regulator at some point though which should sound mint and give the amp a bit more of a fixed bias type sound. added an input going straight into the 12ax7 and also one going into the pentode stage so you can choose to go for a more oldschool gain sound or a complete balls out distortion (may add a tone stack in here later on) disconnected internal speaker and added a speaker out - bit iffy since the internal speaker was 1ohm. Thats about as far as i've got so far apart from cleaning up some wiring etc. Still needs a complete clean out and some other parts changing, also need to build a lineout box at somepoint so i can use a DI for recording. It's really sounding great though and i'll do some sound clips of it at some point soon
I'm not sure what OTL design is? Just received in email from Ashdown:"the lb puts out full power at 8 or 4" though, so I'm happy
output transformerless, it's quite hard to do with valves can sound great though!
The amp will run at 30watts @ 4 ohms, and around 20 watts @ 8 ohms
what? Is the amp an OTL design or something? i thought it used a quad of el84's

i got wood and the reel to reel arrived it's full of mullards, score! been playing around with it it's already working out great as a little amp just need to do a few mods so i can use it as a mic preamp, it's sounding great though!

i'd love to see a schematic for this!

sorry guys i'd really prefer trades on this! yamahas and thunderbirds don't really appeal to me, i'd prefer something a bit more sexy to look at i'd be keeping this rick if it wasn't for the edges nackering my wrists! Also being a builder pedals and amps don't really appeal to me i've already got far to much of that stuff laying about the house.
Make sure you show the edges & all those laaarvly plywood layers! Seriously, I've had a couple of these and they can be pretty decent planks. Mid/late 70s & made by Samick in Korea who went on to make MIK Epiphones, amongst other things. BTW never superglue your knobs on! As soon as anyone uses switch cleaner on them, the acetone will melt the glue & make it run inside the pot - where it will then proceed to harden again & glue your pots solid. Jon.
ahh didn't think about that i'm sure there are better methods it might even just be cheaper to buy a new set of knobs really. I've been quite impressed with this guitar but i picked up a 80s b.c rich which while being a bit to pointy for me is far superior in almost every way! -
I'm unsure who made this as the person i bought it off didn't say, it's quite a good copy though it's neck through, has the proper rickenbacker bridge / pick ups and has the rickosound style wiring. What more could you want from a faker? ;o it has a really great sound pretty near to the real thing, i'd keep it but the rick body shape really doesn't agree with my playing style! It has quite a bit of mojo marking going on but nothing to severe, it's still a great looking bass and i've been complimented on the look of it a fair few times! trades wise i'm after something neck through with a similar pick up config to a tokai hardpuncher (p-bass + single coil near the bridge) something with lots of growl! any more questions or if you'd like more pictures just ask!
Matamp are oldschool made cabs, which means they are unpredictable, as each different shape/loading has a different sound. Probably a sound that will have a character that will be pleasing with an Ampeg.
+1 they'll do what you want, just make sure you know what you want!
