fwiw Mark's new Mesa already has a Mullard 12AT7 in the drive position. I think it makes a great difference and made the EQ much more responsive. Good luck and look forward to hearing how you get on
+1 on 12at7 type gain valves for drivers
Hi Chaps, Many thanks for the links Nick. I'd googled various topics relating to Vox Tonebenders, but never came up with anything relating to them specifically. there seems to be a lot of info regarding modding fuzzfaces, but not Tonebenders I think you may all be right though, in that it's probably better to leave it stock if I ever thought about resale value. I'm not looking at selling, as I do get great tones using it in a blender. I didn't know they fetched such large sums of money.
wise decision, sell it and buy one of the many tonebender clones or buy a kit and i'll give you a list of mods you can do to it to make it great for bass.
This is such a stunning amp and I find it painful to have to do this but I need the dollar, so something's gotta go. My Gallien Krueger with Rusty Box pre-amp suits what I'm doing at the moment. So here goes... Orange AD200B mk3, roughly 18 months old, well looked after, decent quality fitted padded cover included. Re-valved the output in January this year and put an old Philips 12AT7 in the middle position of the pre-amp. This has just made the gain a little smoother, the amp sounds a bit more old-school for it but you can still get those very aggressive "Converge" tones from it when the gain is cranked. I had the amp serviced and biased by a professional (I can supply the invoice/notes from the service). It's currently at my practice place but I can get pics of it tomorrow when I bring it home. It's in immaculate condition. I think I still even have the original box! You're welcome to collect. Alternatively I can do fully insured shipping for £20. I'd prefer bank transfer or cheque, I don't mind paypal but please add 3% to the price if you want to use that. PM me any questions. Ed
do you mind me asking why the middle position? you'd be much better off replacing the input or the phase splitter valve!
Quite a lot of distortion pedals appear to be finicky about the impedance match between input stage on the pedal and output stage on the instrument, to the point that some work far better with passive basses than active basses. Therefore unless all your pedals before the distortion have true bypass (which in itself could add extra treble loss due to cable capacitance if you have a large FX board) then the distortion pedal will be presented with the low impedance output of a typical buffered pedal which will affect the response of the distortion. I think a big part of this is whether or not the distortion pedal has a nice buffer stage before the distortion circuitry. Alex
i'd only really worry about that with a fuzz face type circuit which was made with a low impedence input signal in mind, most more modern pedals have an inbuilt buffer like the o/p's
Very interesting - cant believe I nearly missed this! I didnt know you could get low voltage valves. Ive just done a quick google for data sheets for the 1zh1zb - I didnt get any hits. Where did you find these valves? Were they NOS?
the ebay link in the first post is a link to them, i don't think they still make many submini valves, there very cool
Friday morning. Neil in Customer Service is, I believe, just for customer service. He's sorted out loads of stuff for me. Think thats why they are much better at helping out. Yeah, the 500W is probably right for me. Im very interesed in hearing the SP cabs. The 2x12 and 4x10 are REALLY small. Get this, the 4x10 is only 63lbs! Which is pretty good for Orange...they like to make heavy gear! Oh, and for anyone who is interested, the 8x10 is using NEO SPEAKERS! Im quite shocked!
Slightly off topic but on the odd occasion I've looked at on board pre amp bits all the very best quality, lowest noise ICs tend to draw a huge current. As most people don't want to change their batteries every other week most pre's use ICs chosen for their low energy use rather than performance. Maybe more use should be made of pedalboard mounted power supplies - Alembic is the only bass I can think of that uses them.
aye i agree, if you use pedals anyway you can mod them to become the power supply, all you need is a stereo jack and cable.
The german-made Hoyer 25 guitar (three were made in the mid '50s) had a built in full tube amp and speaker. There are several '60s makers who used built-in transistor amps but this one is the only one I know that uses tubes.
bet that was a instant back breaker. i've put up clips now, will have to do some more with distortion and when i've not got 2 year old strings on the bass also!
No, all different circuits mate, the Llama is another classic, one of Tom Petty's favourites I'm told. Also known as the Tube Fuzz - better suited to lead guitar but a pretty good ranging fuzz for bass once a few caps have been swapped out.
the red llama is great another great mod to do is to add an input buffer stage and take a clean blend from that similar to this, http://runoffgroove.com/ubescreamer.html
EDIT: oh, and my guitarist has recently got some massive multi FX pedal that we'll probably try using rather than his amp next time we try recording. do you think that will improve the sound or whatever? sorry i haven't got more info of the pedal, he's only used it for one gig so i haven't had the chance to have a proper look at it.
that might be the problem, for a short and simple solution i recomend sticking a sm57 infront of a cranked valve amp

Bass wah like the 105q (no toe switch) but not sucking tone?
umph replied to 1976fenderhead's topic in Effects
I love my 105q but it sucks so much tone I decided to get it in a looper... unless if I find a similar bass wah that doesn't suck tone! And no toe switch and no giant footprint. Does it exist?
you could true bypass it -
I was about to ask if this idea had ever been commercially marketed and I am surprised that Sandberg had done it. I never quite grasped valves in the power vs tone area. I know older amps have post and pre amp valve sections and the newer ones tend to have just pre-amp so I guess this is trying to emulate the latter. Had been asking the troops for opinions on an 70s simms-watts all valve bass amp earlier. You always associate miniatuarisation with ICs rather than valves - is this a recent developement? BB
valves started getting very small and powerfully there was talk of IC style valves but then obviously transistors etc came along and won the race and all the research was scrapped bit of a shame really in one sense but IC's are alot easier to run
Have you got the pcb layout you used mate? I wont nick the idea or anything,i have been wanting to get into valves for a while and this looks a lot safer than messing round with mains voltage.
its on stripboard and i havn't made up a pcb for it just yet, i can draw up a schematic for you if you'd like though?
Are you going to vent the installation somewhere to let the heat out?
it doesn't really produce much heat, subminis are different beasts to your average 12ax7!
Cracking idea buddy, but the only issue i see is that if you have to have a floorbox, Would people not be more inclined to just use a valve pedal? Unless you do indeed make it somehow visible, in which case it would be cool as funk...
unfortunatly it doesn't glow, most of the subminis don't it only has 1.5v's on the heaters! well the floor box doesn't have to be very large at all just big enough to fit two jacks and a 9v input into it, so its not a huge draw back. It can still be powere off a battery if you wanted i just havn't tested the battery life yet i'm thinking it'll be about the same as a power hungry opamp though. the only advantage of having this in the bass and not just a standalone preamp though would be so you could play around with it on the fly, with this version i've made it very basic i've made it so it runs very clean and just has volume controls, but you could always add a bit more control so that you could have the valve break up a bit more and produce some distortion and also add some tone controls. think the main reason i did it though is just because i wanted a bass with a valve in it ;>

i've been working on a valve preamp to put into a bass for a while now and i've finally settled on a design i like that sounds great and is reliable. it uses one a russian 1zh1zb valve as the preamp, and currently i've only got it wired up with a volume pot for each pick up but i may add a tone control later on but as is i think it sound great without. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWNX:IT i got around the problem of battery drain by powering it via a stereo cable which means it has to be powered via a floor box (kind've like phantom power but using a 1/4 cable) but the added bonus is you can have a DI etc in this floor box aswell i have a DI and valve buffered effects loop in mine, sounds great! clip is bridge solo'd neck solo'd the both pick ups with fingers then the same again with a pick. and its recording going straight into the computer! http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songI...;songID=8001936 and some pictures of the cheapo 30pounds bass i put the preamp into! and the valve itself - exscuse the wiring its not the neatest i've done.
Another little pic to add... right that's the geekish soldering / non-photogenic side of the amp almost complete.
