Nice amp. Might help people to know whereabouts you are though. Think the last Sound City on here went for around £200 but that wasn't with Mullards and wasn't a bass specific one. Also, if you know exactly what valves are in it, that'd help too.
it had a mullard ;> and i don't think you'd need more low end from a soundcity 120! the active eq slays it.
Sounds interesting. Got any more information?
https://taweber.powweb.com/store/2head.htm i've wanted to try one of these out but i don't 100% trust them ;p also there only 200watts so i don't know if it'd be all that safe with a 200watt head!
I have seen a few Ampegs Classic heads and 8x10 cabs on ebay go dirt cheap (different bids, but like 800 quid if you won em both!) but i'm too skint to get one before i sell my Orange AD200B with OBC 4x10 and OBC 1x15. This amp is impossible to sell! Only reason i am sellin it is that it's not right for my band. sounds ace though. Also, i wanna try the Marshall VBA, seen them heads goin for 400 quid! I'm well gutted!
try the orange out with some different cabs before you flog it the orange cabs are terrible from my experience.
Oh.. nice But why have the tone controls in that order? - MIDDLE-BASS-TREBLE. Seems a bit cack-handed. What are the little toggle switches below the main knobs?
would make sense if it was a baxandall tone stack, would be easier to lay out
The American one has 8, looks like this has 6:
still 807s are only like 60quid each and 6 kt88s will cost you around 200 and 807s can do 800watts in pushpull they do need quite alot of voltage though ;<
Thanks for all the replies on this guys, some great tips here. I think the main issue with the string is that it's just not as punchy and defined as the rest of the strings. Probably a pretty drastic measure but what do you reckon a new set of pickups would do? I mean the theory I have in my head is that a higher quality set of pickups instead of the stock yamaha alnico's would make a considerable difference. I don't want to mess about with the preamp as it's really good as it is, I'm just thinking about maybe getting a pair of 5 string EMG's and seeing if it improves things. With regards to winding the string down to the bottom of the peg I usually do that with my strings anyway. It does make a difference but the definition on the B string is still a bit weak. Ad
from my experience with the warwick protube IX it was exactly a lowend monster and tended to be all about the midrange try your bass out with a bigger amp and or some different speakers before you start messing about with it!

who actually needs 8 kt88s would be better off with 2 807 valves - much cheaper to revalve etc.
surely thats a matter of opinion http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5iK9rH0Ftc
the bass sounds that distorted on its own? thats some pretty special pick ups its got in it if so and i think thats ruined my gas for a eb-0 after hearing that ;p

Alex
i'm not 100% sure but i think it might be these http://professional.celestion.com/bass/pdf/BL15-400X8.pdf i know there 8 ohm celestions around 450watts a piece and there definatly not neo ones
The first one will be going to the far North-East so if you're up around there at any point there may be an opportunity! I'd be very curious to find how they differ. Alex
me to since the matamp isn't anything fancy design wise its essentially two high powered speakers in a well made box. i'd love to see what kind of frequency response it gives though
It's certainly a very appealing preamp! Unfortunately adding all that EQ whilst maintaining signal integrity is very expensive, hence the vast price difference between it and the U5 (and similarly between the U5 and Avalon's other preamps). I'm unfamiliar with the effects of output transformers on tone - I'm just aware that if they're not large enough they can form a bottleneck due to the magnetic fields from the two coils failing to couple fully at high power - and that with the high output impedance of a valve amp you have to have an output transformer to shift over to the low voltage high current drive that a speaker needs. But when you have a solidstate power stage you already have the right output impedance so Jonas must prefer what an output transformer does to the tone. I notice the amps are relatively low power (compared to other standalone power amps, they're not much different to typical bass heads) and thus wonder if he likes the sound of a transformer coupled solidstate power amp running beyond its linear zone? Alex
i guess it could effect the frequency response making it a bit more linear and theres also transformer distortion which could be pleasing to the ears other than that i see no real point in it other than adding a solid lump of metal to the amp
Hi Alex I am about to order one of Matamps GT200 Bass amps and wondering which way to go with cabs I don't know which way to jump other than away from 15's I know this is a "how long is a peice of string" question but any advice would be welcome Cheers
nice choice with the bass amp those things sound sexy
Hey guys, I've been thinking a lot about starting to play an electric guitar recently - really hard to write melodic death metal when you only have a bass in your hand. I recently came about an intresting offer -> http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_fv430bk.htm . Price is good enough for me (When I'll have cash, I'll get EMG 81+85's in there), have enough cash now, and know where to get a good priced second hand pedal. But here comes the tricky part - no $$ for an amp. I really love the Peavy VYPYR 75watt and Line6 Spider III 75 watt combos w/ 1x12, but since I'm saving up for a car, I can only buy myself a guitar, or indulge in a bass upgrading orgy (Respray, EMG's). I have a Ashdown MAG300 + 4x10" that's been serving me well for months and I'm thinking of using it for the guitar (With the drive pedal in the FX loop). My question is not about tone or something, but if I won't drasticly affect the amp in a bad way. I thought of using it, because I like to play a lot of stuff with drive effects and it sounds REALLY good doing it. So guys, please help me make up my mind Cheers, Fek.
stay away from line 6 spider amps they are the bane of all sound guys ever ;<

Bassist Are VERY Conservative in what they want from a bass
I think its the nature of the beast. The reality is, to most peoples ears, the guitar is a more versatile instrument There are more things you can do with it, and more (acceptable) sounds you can get out of it. How many non-dance/RnB songs have a guitar solo in them? Most of them. How many have a bass solo in them? Very few. Whether we like it or not, most people prefer and are more receptive to the sound of a guitar doing something different than a bass. These means there is a greater market for a broad range of guitars. Also, more people play guitar: more popularity = more variation. Let's face it, the UK's most famous bass soloist (MK) spends most of his time at the bottom of the bargain bucket in petrol stations! I think the bass is a fine instrument, but a bass solo to me isn't as expressive as a guitar solo. To me, bass is about holding down the low end (my opinion only), and for that I don't want anything more than 4 strings and passive electronics.
bass solos aren't that great ;p i think the real beauty of bass is when you lay an epic groove down which you hear on almost every pop track nowadays, where as you hear guitar doing hardly any backing since its a very obnoxius instrument when it comes to sonic space and mixing -
Your welcome to come try my Orange... You'll cry when you hear it. It sounds ace. Sadly, not the sound I'm after with my band, I'd happily swap it for a VBA400. And i'd agree with you on the SVT II pro, Not my cup of tea them.
vba400 is fart, but put a bit of overdrive in front of it and it sings ;p try a matamp or a hiwatt and say that valve amps aren't hifi or great ;<
