Distortion advice

get a rat and mod it if you put both of the feedback resistors on pots and change the caps you can make it so you can control the gain on the high end and low end and achieve what your after i think.

    Distortion advice
I'm thinking of earlier Entwistle now, but personally i don't think a sound like that can be acheived through "signal processing". Just an old Hiwatt, a Precision or Rickenbacker and sheer volume in my case. Nothing else needed in the chain. Go old school. Sorry, just realised you were thinking of his later sounds. No help here then. Cheers, Jake M
still a big valve amp would help. try out the ehx valve drive type thing that should get you close

  6.
im sure its a great pedal, but if you consider the likes of dha and owen electronics are very similar in that its very difficult to try before you buy. For the kinda money owen are asking you can get the top range dha valve pedal, which when you compare features appears far better value for money straight off. i think if they knocked it down to £199 they'd more than make up for it with extra sales
aye considering if you were to knock up something similar yourself he amount you could save. i need to find myself some pentode minis

  8.
As far as im aware, you could quite easily bias the tubes a little colder (forgive the poor terminology, i dont really know what im on about) as the Trace V heads have that lovely bias trim on the back.
i wouldn't mess around with the bias if you don't know what your doing
  9.
have to totally disagree there, iv had all the russian muff varieties, and they all work great with active basses
i'd go with that. i don't get why everyone seems to think all distortions seem to hate active basses, its only ones like fuzz faces etc which aren't buffered that struggle with high impedences.
  10. its not ideal but it would be fine.
  11.
I'm intrigued - what's your dream head?
think i'm going to base it around a orange mkII but replace the tone stack section with an active one akin to the one in sound city 200 and give the power amp section a revamp so its running 4 kt77s and underrun them so i get around 80 very clean and loud watts that will start to overdrive nicely as i get the amp to fullish volume. Put it in a pine enclosure and it should all stay under 20kgs!
  12.
+1 I was running a GB shuttle 6 and a Electro harmonix Black finger ( valve compressor) and it was fantastic, i really rate the EH comp but only AFTER changing the valves. That said i would love a trace v6/v8
buy mine so i can make my dream head
  13.
The filter takes care of bad language, but unfortunately I can't filter everything. IMHO the real beauty of a valve sound comes from the power amp. I haven't played a valve loaded hybrid amplifier that felt or sounded much like a valve amp, for better or worse. It is also true that not all valve amps sound alike any more than solid state or hybrid designs. The Trace V4 I had sounded beautifully creamy and clean, not a hint of breakup or distortion anywhere, which was great. Sometimes people assume valve amps = distortion and a shortcut to the 'valve sound' is a hairy distortion pedal, valve or otherwise, into a solid state poweramp... but I think this misses the most critical part of the recipe out. Again all in my experience etc. I have never been happier with my sound and it is all digital now - so whatever works! ped
imo it comes from the combination of a valve pre amd power amp, most amps with a "valve pre" still have alot of solid state stuff in the signal path. I think anything else i say about valves is going to be buyist because after my experiences with building and modding, Valves are so much simpler / easier to fix and sound so much better even when you accidentally overdrive them to much
  14.
Didn't say it was sh1t I said it was sh1t compared to individual pedals, and the overdrive on your £200 multi-effects is not going to sound as good as a £200 dedicated valve overdrive, no matter how clever the modelling. If it was Ampeg would be out of business. Though I was stating the obvious really. Up to you cos I frankly could not give a toss what you do.
price doesn't always mean its better alot of its down to personal preference. To be honest i think people in the crowd don't notice so much if you have good tone as thats what there used to hearing on records but if you have terrible tone people tend to whince etc. not saying you have bad tone though. i'd advise getting a valve amp though i got one and i'm never going back to solid state! i've found where all my bottom ends been hiding.
  15. i'd be intrested in just the head ;<
  16. i'd go for an amp and head getting a slightly larger combo isn't a great idea if your serious about bass as you'll end up just upgrading it again. Marshall solid state stuff isn't to great to IMO
  17. bump forgot about this thread only the red onions looper for sale

  19.
In a similar vein I'm looking for a +12v and -12v supply. The T-Bone In-Ear Transmitter needs +12v The Rolls PM351 Monitor Mixer needs -12v both with respect to signal ground. I'm also going to need -9v for the EBS Maybe I'll just have to make one.
http://www.geofex.com/circuits/+9_to_-9.htm flip reverse it! you can do 12v with that to
  20.
You don't really need to replace in pairs - just buy one of the same type and get the tech to bias the set accordingly. All this matched pairs stuff is allegedly voodoo invented by Groove Tubes to sell more valves.
you match tubes to roughly the same gain so that you can bias them close to each other without one running really hot and the other running really cold
  21. barry was a great guy to work with, very patient and a founten of knowledge.
  22.
ah but if it's an output valve, it'll mean a new quad (or at least you can replace pairs). It's gone to the tech anyway - I made a snap decision on the way home, rang him up and brought it round. I'm sh*t at stuff like that, I'd rather let somebody else sort it out before I electrocute myself or burn down the house.
can't hurt yourself changing valves unless you decide to do it with a hammer while its turned on or something. Sounds more like it'd be the output transformer to me, i'd take it to a tech.
