just listened to the samples, you're overloading the input stage of the pedal it's nothing to do with the bass. It's the transistor losing bias from overloading and creaping back in when it regains it. Does it do it if you turn the gain down? As to why its strongest on those frets my guess is thats a particular frequency thats coming through very strong on the bass and accented by the pedal.

What guitar amp for people who do not know how to work things
Learning how to not break your gear should be a pretty fundamental part of being a musician. you don't get to be a pilot by forgetting to put the wheels down when landing, and saying 'Not my job, I am just supposed to fly the thing.'.
Nah don't teach them how to, i like people breaking stuff and giving me money. Also +1 on the bandit! -
You should swear less in it, so kids can read it and be encouraged to play around inside electrical equipment.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MrlEvYtl44

Heya dude, yeah i can give it a once over. I can get it done pretty quick if you're in a rush, i can't really put a price on it though till i see what needs to be done though.

Made a blog about my amp repairs and all the things i'm doing instead of finishing that amp off haha, thought some of you might be intrested! Basically it's just a testament to how bad my camara skills and grammar are. Btw would anyone be intrested in me doing a post on one about how to do DIY basic maintenance? http://ampsnshit.wordpress.com/ http://www.tumblr.com/blog/ampsnshit

my sound doesn't really work di'd, needs compression of a valve amp loud and the high end limiting by the speaker ;o
I spent 2 hours trying to debug a tubescreamer once when I realised I hadn't actually put the op amp chip in the socket. How I laughed. Not.
been there done that. Best one is not plugging in a power supply
I started the '70s bass amps' thread to find out more about cool vintage bass amps, only to find out there are none.
That's a lie. they're are loads
Yup, looks neat and tidy. All "decent" handwired construction. Not a PCB in sight. chassis-mounted valve bases. All as it should be !! Very nice indeed.
it's all on pcbs? Nice wiring, not quite up to hiwatt standards though, where are the right angles? ;p
no I know, but I'm enquiring more about the signal of the valve once at a high volume - how valves differ and which might be of a less high gain nature?? I think the prob lies largely in the input gain tho, as Thinman posted
fair different valves have different characteristics, buy a few and do some valve rolling to find one you like. Not a fan of ehx valves at all.
-
basically, you're not gonna get more volume via changing the valves.

ampeg aren't doom, you need to go british.
No I said this:- And I said it for a very very good reason. I've heard the result of Kit's voice being recorded with an AKG C414, a classic high quality large condensor mic, and its very very strident in the upper mids, far too much. I had to do an awful lot of vaery careful work on her voice to make it sound big and natural and not so peaky. This was as a result of the mismatch of the mic used to record her voice, it simply isnt suited to that kind of mic. One of my first comments to Kit about this was that I would love to hear her voice captured with a quality ribbon mic, or a really good dynamic, both would help in this area. As would a pucker tube mic possibly, but I've never used one on a female vocalist so I'm not sure 100%. Her response was that the best her voice has ever sounded on a recording was when it was tracked with a ribbon - so I know I'm not making this up to justify something, its a happy accident IMO. An sm58 is not often considered a great vocal mic for the studio these days, but you would be amazed at how many great vocals are made with its close cousin the SM7, (closer to an SM57 as it goes, but still in that ballpark). How about that little known album Thriller by some wannabe Michael Jackson? It is absolutely possible that an SM58 bcould sound better on certain voices than an LDC. Not always, but sometimes, and Kit actually happens to have a voice where that is the case IMO. Marti Pello of Wet Wet Wet fame liked the sound of a Sennheiser e845 on his voice, more than any fancy LDC that he had at his disposal. Its not b0110cks, its a fact, if you knew much at all about tracking you would have stopped to think about that possibility before making that comment., I'm done here, bye.
sm7 isn't cheap and cheerful, they are great mics though
to me, that sounds like a sound best delivered by a semiconductor rather than a valve.
+1 ON THIS

http://www.tubebooks.org/tubedata/HB-3/Receiving_Tubes_Part_2/12FQ8.PDF i'd hang onto the el34's guy they're pretty common. The 12fq8 probably wont be a whole bunch of use. Might see if i can find some circuits for them though
As already said, ther 400+ uses a different power section (more powerful using more valves) and has one extra graphic slider than the 400. Never used a 400+ so wouldn't know the difference in sound.
less powerful using more valves. In theory they should be the same wattage but when you start running large multiples of valves unless it's a really well designed amp with proper drive etc you start losing watts. Edit - not saying bass 400+ is bad just that it's not as powerful as everyone thinks. I've had a few in the past etc.
Very easy to re valve actually I always do my own with a Eurotube kit, it's a fixed bias so there's nothing to adjust. I'd say £800 a pretty good price for one, great amp BTW.
It's non adjustable fixed bias, which is bad. you need to make sure the valves are well matched which they pretty much aren't gonna be if you get them from somewhere like that.
