I dont mind it, but its more important to hear the different finger/pick tones!
I may be in the minority here, but I say if people wanna slap, let them slap! it's just another way of playing the instrument. Obviously, listening to a roomful of people making a din by slapping at a trade show or bass day won't give you a particularly representative example of it's merits, but that shouldn't make you think it's some kind of anti social behavior any more than people who tap on bass, which personally I'm not a big fan of but can appreciate that some people have found their voice on the instrument by playing it that way. Lets not get small minded here, people!
  2.
yes iv owned it since the day it was released and t is awesome. If you like the Hydrive sound its the best cab ever
Quite interested in these myself in my search for a small, lightweight and inexpensive setup. Been looking at 2 of these with the LH500 and the Ibanez Promethean 210 combo. The Promethean would be nearly 300 quid less. Have to admit, the 4/8 ohms switch, whilst a great idea, makes me worry about reliability issues in a "more things to go wrong" kind of way. However, I bet when teamed up with the LH500 they sound great.
  3.
Getting quite moist at the thought of these cabs after reading 16 pages on TB in the sleepless night I've just had. Anybody got one / care to comment?
No, not got one, but they're causing me some sleepless nights. I eventually managed to drop off by repeating "if only I had some money..." over and over again. Seriously, though, they look great, especially teamed with a Streamliner.
  4.
Hi Folks TC Electronics TC 1144 Bass Preamplifier For Sale This is a bit of a reluctant sale because this is such a great sounding piece of kit, but with a Hughes & Kettner pre-amp in my rig now and a Hughes & Kettner amp coming my way, I need to make some sensible bass-related decisions for once!! The short story is that I bought this on Basschat last August from stevie. with a view towards linking it with a power amp and my SWR Triad.. But for various reasons, that hasn't happened. However, I have used it for a few gigs in front of the valve channel on my Eden Metro and it's fabulous; particularly with a passive bass like my Roscoe Beck. It gives you real control in terms of matching input volumes & also, really fine control when e.q.-ing, which is why it's probably seen more often in a studio set-up (like it is on this page here). The eq on the Eden is pretty comprehensive but I actually think this is better and more transparent. There's a link to stevie's original For Sale thread HERE It cost me £90 including shipping plus I had it looked over by my amp chappie when I got it, so I'd like to get that back if possible, hence a price of £110 ono + p&p Here's some pics: And some stuff about it on that there inter-web: The Gear Page Global Bass: Ed Friedland Soundclip Harmony Central discussion The nearest thing I can find in terms of similar products on Ebay is this HERE Any questions, please PM me and just to say that I'm happy to post anywhere though I'd recommend insured and recorded mail..and if you're local and want to try it, then you're very welcome to come and do that and have a cuppa! And because I need to balance the 'GAS ledger', I'm not looking for any trades at the moment. Thanks for looking.. Nik
Tried one of these at The Bass Centre years ago, it was fantastic! You're never going to have more control over your tone than one of these babies will give you. The Bandwidth pots just gives you so much control. I remember being knocked out at how I could completely change the sound of the bass I tried it with, over and over again, but it always sounded great! Good luck!
  5.
:hyper: Mark at Bass Direct is a legend... it got here double-quick from the first batch in Europe, I believe. Just had 20 minutes on it.. obviously it's too early to draw any conclusions, but it sounds glorious so far. The highs are lovely and rich, and I love that 220hz mid control. Two gigs this weekend, so it'll get a decent workout. I'll see how it compares to my RH450 and Promethean...
If funds would stretch to it, in other words if we weren't expecting our third nipper any time now, I'd love one of these and two of the Uber Quad cabs, but based on the advice I've had from yourself and others, I think the Promethean meets all my needs.
  6.
Well our mate Ed Friedland already reviewed one and it sounds absolutely great!! Enjoy!!!
Ooh-ooh, I want one! I also want one of those Carvin SB5000's as well!! I know they're a bit wonky looking, but from the clips I've seen they sound MONSTROUS!!

I'll take one. £631.00 at Thomann right now looks like deal of the century!!
  8. Could anyone tell me if the Promethean P5210, the 2x10 combo, has the amp running at 4 ohms (and therefore 500watts) or 8 ohms (and therefore 250 watts)? I know the 1x10 is 8 ohms but can't find any info on the 2x10.
  9.
A small tear fell onto my desk earlier this afternoon whilst at work, and I wondered how great it would be to get paid (enough) to play music for a living. I'm not a brilliant bassist, couldn't cut it as a session musician, but play alright in a group, and good enough to play your general pop or rock songs. The older I get, the more events I attend, wedding, birthday parties etc, and the cover bands there get paid quite a bit to rip off other band's music whilst everyone dances about. Am I missing a trick here? Given enough time, could one build up enough of a reputation to get paid a few hundred quid per show and do a few of these a week? Surely everyone has had this thought before - have I finally reached the point in my [s]career[/s] job where I've had enough and want to do something fun for a living? Obviously there's much to consider. I wonder if anyone here plays for a living? How tough is it to get going? Is it more fun than your old desk job? Are you left with enough cash in your pocket to make it financially worthwhile? (Not in a profiteering way, just enough to be comfortable) I play in an original indie/pop/rock group at the moment. Most of my spare time is taken up with this. Ideally I'd love to get signed and leave the day job to play our original material, but I'm not that much of a day dreamer. I'm guessing that to begin with, it would be weekend work, pub stuff, friends parties etc till we could start charging for events. If things go well then build up enough booked events to pack in the day job. What are the implications? If you're earning enough cash in a group for each member to be a basic rate tax payer, do you need to pay back any royalties? Are there any other charges involved? Perhaps I'll get out of bed on the right side tomorrow and forget all about it, but till then, it would be interesting to learn a little more...
I did the club circuit for 15 years, starting in the north east then pretty much nationally. When I started there was a club circuit to do, it's almost none existent now. I was always an employee, never a band leader. It was fun when I was single and I didn't have to make a great deal of money, but I got out of it when my first daughter came along as there just wasn't enough money in it to give me or my family any kind of future. I now do approx 30-35 gigs a year with a function band, more to just have the enjoyment of playing than make money (it is better paid than the clubs but obviously 30-odd gigs a year ain't gonna pay the mortgage). I would much prefer to make a living out of playing but unless you can turn your hand to a bit of everything, gigs and maybe a bit of teaching, you just aren't going to be able to guarantee a good weekly income. Believe me, it isn't funny when there's no money coming in. I do sometimes feel like I gave in, having to admit that I have to do something else to make a living, but there's a lot to be said for financial security. You could maybe try with a covers band that doesn't interfere with your job, that way you get the enjoyment of playing as well as a bit of extra money on top of your wage, but you'd have to be fairly brave, especially in todays financial climate, to pack in your day job on a whim.
  10.
This no slapping rule is going to hamper one of my key personal objectives - namely, that someone could show me how to do it! I'm a horrendous slapper (hmm... that came out wrong) so could do with a few tips. How will I ever cut through the noise of a saturday afternoon music shop without some prolific slapping skills? I'd probably bring my Lakland DJ4 for sport, or the BC Rich custom... I doubt many will have played the latter, so it's a likely companion.
Maybe someone could arrange a slappers corner (actually, that didn't come out right either...) or a little shelter outside so all the slappers can be castigated like smokers.... If the wife isn't in labour I'll come along as well.
  11.
Has anyone got or heard the Yellowjackets first album featuring Jimmy Haslip? Released in the 80s, it's essential listening for anyone into jazz/funk/fusion. Every track is amazing. Jimmy Haslip's playing is sublime. Well worth checking out.
Jimmy's tone then was much better than it is now, I think he was using a Yamaha BB then. His fretless tone for me was best when he was using his Tobias 5 strings around "Politics" and "Four Corners" time. Not a fan of his 6 string Roscoe, but then again, he speaks very highly of me!
  12.
Glad you're liking it Meenie. I love that finish. So far that's the only one like it. We're thinking seriously of adding it to the option list.
Hi, not wishing to hijack this thread but could I ask you where you get that lovely Baltic Amber scratchplate material from? I'm tempted to have one made for my white Jazz. Your white Super Jazzes with the Baltic plates are almost pornographic!
  13.
It's a really annoyingly small imperial size which I can't remember. That's the best I can give you. Hopefully someone will remember the exact size.
I can't remember either, but I know you can get them from ebay, that's where I got mine when I annoyingly lost my original.
  14.
That was white jazz if I remember correctly. Very nic bass too. Seems Warmoths are not the stuff people want...
yes, it seems so. I put mine on ebay and was offered £350 if I paid the postage! I told the guy to kiss my a**e! I'm keeping it now.
  15. Made in McHenry, Johnsburg, Illinois, where Tom Waits' wife grew up. (Little bit of useless info for ya there...)
  16.
Are you thinking about selling the Audere at all?
Hi, would prefer trade for J Retro, but cheers anyway.
  17.
Kings X playing a few weeks before too. And my coverband - Dogman - doing Fishbone and Kings X covers in between at Trillians 15th April Strange thing going on with tickets though - I bought mine when they went on sale and they arrived last week, but a friend has been unable to buy tickets even from the academy box office, they claim they don't know what's happening apparently. Weird, especially since they've now sent me my 6 tickets. They're doing a full tour and you can buy tickets for all the other dates
Yes, gutted that I won't be able to get to see King's X as the wife is due to give birth that week. Boo. Dogman sounds interesting though!
  18.
The idea: A Jazz Bass done in the old style - nitrocellulose finishing, passive electronics, Olympic White, but with 5 strings and modern hardware. Why? Because I don't have anything like it at the moment; I only have active basses which look rather modern. I have a blues project on the horizon which will require something more traditional and I have found that my EMG-loaded basses sound wicked in hard rock and metal, but their sound is far less suited to older and/or softer styles of music. I wanted nitrocellulose for both the base coat and top coat because I believe that it makes for a more resonant instrument. I have a Strat which I finished in this way which sounds great and really feels alive when I play it. Many claim that this is snake oil / wishful thinking / rubbish and it may very well be, but I don't think so and besides, this is my project! So I went for nitrocellulose base and top coat. The original plan was to do the finishing myself. However, with a baby on the way and nowhere to do the finishing other than inside our flat, that was vetoed. Instead, I have gone with a gentleman in Kentucky to do the finishing for me. The parts: A maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, 1 3/4" nut width, 10" radius, 6105 frets. There is "bonus flame" on the neck. It isn't very much, but it is a nice touch. The pictures aren't the best (I forgot to steal them from Warmoth's site before purchasing, so I don't have the hi-res versions. I have expanded the pics a bit, though): This will have a slight tint on it. Alder body, top rout. This was not a "showcase" (made already) item, so it will be done by Warmoth now and so I don't have a pic. It will have the output jack on the side so I can use the Jazz control plate for volume, volume, tone and series/parallel switch. It is also going to have a double battery box on the back so if I ever want to change it to active and want 18v, I can. Hipshot A bridge, chrome (stock pic from Hipshot) Hipshot Ultralite Tuners, all chrome (stock pic from Hipshot) Seymour Duncan SJ5 67-70 set I got these off Ebay. They were made for a custom builder and don't have the cheesy logo on the front. Score! [Pic later] Parts: Gold string ferrules. I wanted a little flashiness which was just for me, and Warmoth were out of chrome and I wanted the neck before someone else jumped on it. An array of Fender parts: Neck plate Control plate Knobs String guides x 2 (from wesfinn here) Schaller strap buttons, chrome A neck plate cushion. CTS 250k pots Orange Drop 0.047 capacitor And that's about it. I don't think there will be all that much movement until the body and neck are done. It will take the finisher 4-6 weeks to get it all done (rather quickly, I think/fear) and a couple of weeks before that for Warmoth to get the parts to him. I'll put up the occasional update and some more pics when they are ready.
Sounds great mate. Here's some pictures of mine to keep you going. Basic finishes are much more tasteful, in my opinion. A quick glance through the Warmoth Gallery shows up how people generally get carried away when ordering their Warmoth parts and end up with a bass that looks way over the top cos they couldn't resist the flame maple top, the birds eye edge bound fingerboard and the pearl scratchplate. Keep it simple! (Having said that, I'm seriously tempted by a nice Baltic Amber scratchplate for mine, I just don't know if I can bring myself to take a screwdriver to my lovely bass).

  20.
Is it the kind for a side mounting Jack? Because the J Retro deluxe needs the bass to have the side loading jack.
Yes, my Jazz has a side jack and battery box.
  21. Hi all, just on a whim I fancy a try of a J-Retro Deluxe preamp, the one with the passive tone control. I used to have a John East/ACG02 preamp that was a great sounding thing, but being a filter based preamp I found it a little finnicky (technical term) to use. I currently have an Audere JZ3 2 band, 4 control pre in my Warmoth Jazz. It is set up vol/vol/bass and treble cut and boost/passive tone control. Anyone fancy swapping their J-Retro for this?
  22.
Third page again and not even single reply? Really?
Unbelievable! Very nice Warmoth. There wasn't too much interest in my Warmoth Jazz, either. I think everyone is just skint. Good luck with the sale.
  23.
I might just run with the Promethean head for a bit, just for change.
Interesting! You're selling the RH and keeping the Promethean! I only say so because I'm thinking of getting a Promethean!
  24.
That is one stunning setup, aesthetically speaking. I hope it sounds as good as I expect It sure looks damn cool. To add to the new amps for 2011, see my thread near this. New Genz Benz Shuttle Max 9.0!
Ha ha!! I knew it!! I suggested the Shuttle Max 9 to Genz Benz over on Talkbass when the Shuttle 9 came out. They swore they wouldn't make it. I wonder if they might give me one by way of a thank you?
  25.
Hmm, at that price id definitely try as many as possible. Test the Berg, see if you like it. Plenty of other options, although as mentioned id probably also recommend trying GS112s or DB112s.
Also the Euphonic Audio Wizzy 12 or M Line 12.
