1.
I set the preamp levels such that I'm getting a touch of tube warmth out of it (gain on 1/2, volume on 1/4 at present), and then dial up/back the volume on the cab so that I could adjust volume levels using the preamp. As it happens it's on 1/4 volume (or 3/4 from 0db decrease if you prefer). And that's without the extension cab. Tres ridiculous volume! Mark
Cheers for all your comments, guys. Looks like I'd better start putting some money aside each week, cos I've pretty much talked myself into it!
 2.
My Berg is excellent I didn't get it from BassDirect, I got it second hand/multiple hand off of Owen who is a member on BC. I believe he got it off another BC'er before that who got it from.... etc etc. But I was convinced of their worth when playing at BassDirect. One of the things left to get now is the extension cabinet. I've got a Berg HS115 that I'll sell eventually the fund that (still in the packaging). Essentially, it's a one cabinet solution for even large function rooms designed to kill sound. With a good preamp (I consider the ART Tube MP I'm presently using to be decent/good, if a little sparse on features) it reaches great volumes and sounds full, rarely needing PA support except for monitoring. What else do you want to know about it? Mark
Got to say I've been on the BassDirect site on numerous occasions and have been sorely tempted to get the old credit card out and have done with it. However, what with the impending recession, the unfavourable exchange rate, Christmas and the knowledge that the wife will definitely kick me out if I do, I've managed to resist (so far). On the other hand I work my nuts off and never even treat myself to a magazine, so I feel that next year could be the year when I allow myself the luxury of buying a proper top end rig, and the Berg is the one I have my eye on. Sure, it's darned expensive, but it would hopefully be my final amp purchase, so the size and portabilty issue is a big factor to consider for my advancing years. I'm used to 4x10's, but on the few occasions I've tried 12's I've loved their ability to cut through a loud stage mix, and from what I've read the Berg isn't just any cab! The only thing I feel a little unsure about is the slap sound compared to the 10's. How do you find it?
 3.
Just spotted your thread! I happen to think that these things are fantastic cabinets. They are amazingly complex bits of equipment, but that are stupidly simple to operate and get right. This was part of the inspiration behind Jim Bergantino making this range (so I believe), to help bass players stop screwing up their sound with the wrong power amp/configuration/setup. I like that I've got a flat sounding cab that already has the power amp section built in, together with compression and limiting to sort out any peaks or the like. As such, they are exactly what I'm after: simple, easy to use, full and balanced sounding. I'm now on the look out for the perfect preamp, or at least a selection I would say though that I did and would refuse to buy them at their normal brand new price. That's just my conviction and personal preference. I waited, so when I got mine, its second hand cost matched up with cost of a normal second hand bass rig. Bit of a no brainer there really? CK, they are quite sweet sounding, a sound guy described it as 'very wide' and 'less in your face than your Schroeder'. However I believe that with the right preamp you can get virtually any sound you want; this being a great benefit of such a setup. Re: the Summit TD100 - a thread on Talkbass summed it up 'sounds great, but at the cost of versatility'. From what I recall, I quite liked it, but I want more tone shaping versatility in a preamp than just 'volume' and 'impedance'. Mark
Yeah, they are expensive, and the exchange rate being what it is right now, they are only going to get more so. I'd be surprised to see many come up second hand, although you obviously benefited this way, you lucky chap! How do you find the slap sound on it? I only ask because I'm used to the sound of 10's.
 4.
www.michaelpopedesign.com Sorry about that! Looked it up as an afterthought. It just intrigues me. I'm definitely on the lookout for a good preamp, now that I've gotten to grips with my Berg. I'm not looking in that price bracket just yet, but it still intrigues me.
Ooh-ooh! Tell me about your Berg!!! Have you tried it with a Summit Audio TD100 (I'm assuming that you got your Berg from Bass Direct)? By the way, Mike Pope can't half play, the bastard!
 5. It's probably already too late for me! After many years of stage abuse my hearing is noticibly affected, particularly trying to conduct a conversation in a noisy environment, such as a pub, is very hard work. I do use the foam type you can buy from a chemist, but just wondered if there's anything better out there.
 6.
I tried one out at Bassdirect (although it was a 310 I believe). It was a very nice sounding cab but I came to the conclusion that (with the preamp I had been using with it) the cab was almost too sweet sounding for live work.
Which preamp did you use?
 7. Part 27 in my quest for the perfect rig. I've enquired about 'em all, from both ends of the cost spectrum. This week, it's the turn of the much lauded Bergantino IP112. Anyone got one? Particularly interested in how they perform with the EX112/HT112 extension cab and the (also much lauded) Summit Audio TD100 preamp. Are they as good as they cost!? Are we talking real punchiness? What's the slap sound like? Can something so small replace two 4x10's? Is 2 and a half thousand quid spent on a bass rig sheer madness? Do I need it or should I just learn to be happy with what I've got? Help!
 8.
I use the LH500 with a Marshall 410 which is rated at 4 Ohms. I now wish to ask a stupid question, the head has two 4 Ohms speaker outputs, does this mean I can add a further Speaker (say a Marshall 15) rated ay 4 Ohms directly into the head without any problems. As it stands my rig is LOUD anyway, but I would just like to know. By the way love the LH500 head - simple
No. But you could if you spent a bit more and got the LH1000, as that has 2 500 watt power amps.
 9.
Effectively a modular 4 x 10. With both cabs connected and that LMK giving it some it's stupidly loud. Fantastic tone and unbelieveable projection. Each cab is 18 kg and the whole thing has saved my back no end and I haven't missed my GK one bit. :-)
That looks like a great rig! Particularly interested in the Bergies. Did you try any of the other Bergies, the 12's or the non-neo 2x10s?
 10.
Ampeg SVT IIP preamp into Bergantino IP310 1000w powered cab, pre = ?, cab = 85lbs, so the Avalon U5 may be for sale.
How are you getting on with the Bergie? Have you tried the 1x12's?
 11.
hey man, go to "My Controls" and then click "Edit Signature", and then type some stuff... EDIT: For being wrong
Top man.......
 12.
Hey, I'm currently mucking about with a BOSS SYB-5 and a Digitech Bass Synth Wah and have found that the BOSS has terrible tracking but good sounds and the Digitech has excellent tracking but looses volume. I really want to get a Deep Impact/Hysteria sound (i have the big muffs!), can anyone recommend a pedal that isn't absolutely impossible to find that can do this? Cheers
Z-Vex Woolly Mammoth.
 13. Been on here a while now, but never figured how to do the little grey wordy gear lists that people have on the bottom of their pages. Excuse my ignorance. It ain't that important, but, y' know, would be nice to know how to do it.
 14.
If I'm correct, Glock use Volt speakers made to their own specs and a Foster tweeter. The crossover is a thing to behold, beautifully made with the best components. Save a little extra and get a Glock secondhand as you will struggle to make your money back on a self-build, if you decide to move it on.
Thanks for the info Guys. Looks like I might have to stick with what I've got for now. My days of spending 1100 quid on a cab are behind me, unfortunately, and I can't see many people who have one wanting to part with it! Might just get a second hand Hartke 4.5xl to go with the one I've got now. Know of anyone selling one?
 15. I suppose this goes out to any of you lucky people who are priveliged enough to own a Glockenklang cab. I'm interested in the idea of getting some Volt Ps10/175 loudspeakers and putting them in an empty 4x10 box, or getting someone to build a cab and fit the Volts in, in order to get me a Glock copy. Is it the Ps10/175's that are fitted in the Glock 4x10 cabs (non neo). Do Volt do neo speakers, or are another make fitted in the Take 5 cab? Also, what tweeter and crossover is fitted, and finally, does anyone know who could do a good job of building such a cab? I'm trying to work to a budget of 3-400 quid. Cheers!
 16.
Ive heard they suffer of horrible neck-dive due to the 2 steel bars they use to reinforce the neck. A pity cos they look gorgeous!
I'm currently half way through building my first Warmoth, a 4 string Jazz with swamp ash body and maple/ebony neck. It currently has no pickups or electronics in it and does suffer neck dive. I'm hoping that fitting p.u's and circuitry will add enough body weight to balance things out. I enquired if Warmoth could fit graphite bars, instead of steel but they said they'd tried that and it resulted in dead spots so they decided to stick to steel. I find that a little strange as my Fender Jazz Deluxe 5 string has graphite bars and balances perfectly despite the extra neck mass and additional machine head and doesn't have a single dead spot anywhere.
 17.
I too carry a set of tools and spare strings and batteries, which is fine for fixing problems between sets, but it's in the middle of a song that Sod's law dictates a problem occurs. Much better to have a stand-by ready IMHO.
I haven't snapped a string on a bass for about 17 years, but have had batteries die this year. Still only carry one bass, a Fender Jazz Deluxe 5 string, although that will change when I finish my Warmoth Jazz.
 18.
if its a passion number 213, it wont be from 1984, the first passion was built in 1986 iirc, i was about to pull the plug on a sunburst passion number 025 from 1986, and i think that is a series 2, as series one were wooden neck thru's i think, and series 3's have the 90:10 ratio??, very nice bass though!
Cheers. Series 1's were full graphite partial through necks.
 19.
as far as i know the vigier body logo wasn't applied on the early passions. The guy is lying through his teeth if it is a refinish as he has told me he has owned since new. The number on the bass looks original, and i doubt they could have done a refinish without re applying that. Tis nice, but not nice enough for my picky mind!
I stand corrected! 15/05/86 it is! That still makes it a series 1, full graphite neck/no body logo Passion. The finish problem was there when I bought it second hand sometime around '92. It started as a bubble just below the lower horn, which can be seen in the pic, then spread to the middle. Gel coat? Could be. Seems to be a coloured lacquer applied directly to the wood, rather than a colour then a lacquer coat. The bits that have come away left clear wood beneath. Contacted Patrice to get a price to refinish......700Euros!!!!
 20. h ere's an early one, 1984 Passion I, serial no. 213. Was my main bass for 10 years but now in need of some TLC. The finish is falling off! Will never be sold. The necks on Vigiers are the best of any bass I've played, so thin and the wide flat frets make for a super low action
 21.
In recent weeks I've been complaining of severe GAS for a Vigier. I put an appointment on with the doctor, Luckily, he paid me a home visit yesterday, dished out a prescription and the GAS problem is cured Woo Hoo! I've known Nick (Doctor of the Bass) online for about 10 years, but it was great to meet face to face, what a great guy, and outstanding player. Sorry for the quality of the pics, will sort some better ones later when i can bare to put the bass down for more than 5 minutes. Cheers for the bass Nick ATB Dave Check my baby out, 1983 Passion. #213. Seen better days, but the best neck of any bass I've played.
 22. Hartke LH1000. Anyone got one? Are they any good?
 23. Anyone out there own or tried A Glockenklang Heart Rock? I am currently using a Hartke HA 350 with a 4.5xl cab. Sounds nice but a little underpowered. The cab is great, though, so I thought I'd get another (currently £278 at Thomann) and a more powerful amp. I was going to go for a Mark Bass LMII, but heard a few online sound samples that I was really disappointed in. Sounded totally lifeless to me. I know it's hard to tell from a sound sample, will have to get my hands on one. I then thought, well, if I'm gonna get a new amp, I might as well spend now and keep forever. I've read a few reviews on the Glock Heart Rock and it looks like a Rolls Royce of an amp, (with a price to match). It would definitely be powerful enough, 750 watts at 4 ohms into two 4x10's! Anyone got one? I know that just getting another 4.5xl and keeping the HA350 will improve power as the amp will be knocking out it's full 350 watts, but the Glock just appeals to me!
 24.
Well, after swapping a load of gear around here I now need a reasonable combo urgently (as in the next couple of days!). I have been looking around on the net this morning, as usual there does not seem to be much secondhand around within a reasonable distance to collect and it's looking like I may well have to buy something new... hence the Roland D-Bass has surfaced!!! So... anyone have any experience of these, either the 210 or 115? Any good? Should I forget about them right now? They look as though they could be ok, in my experience Roland does not make much that is not up to the mark. I would also be keen to hear from anyone with either a combo or 4ohm cab available within striking distance of the South West that is available to buy in the next couple of days.... all reasonable (ish) things will be considered! Cheers Steve Haven't tried the new 210, but had a DB700 (1x15) for a few years. I absolutely loved the sound of it, and having two programmable channels is a great feature. The compressor was great, the overdrive sounded lovely and the chorus nice and lush. The downside was it was heavy and not really powerful enough to use in anything other than a small club. It had to be on 10 on the pre and master and still struggled on a loud stage, which was a shame cos the sound was lovely and rich. It developed a fault that resulted in no sound when first switched on. This was cured by thumping the heat sink! Yeah, technical, I know. 6 months or so ago it packed up altogether and I was told the cost to replace the faulty part (the main pcb) was the wrong side of £140. I was told by the repair man that he spoke to Roland and they told him "it was a very common fault." So you might want to consider that before you buy or even speak to Roland yourself to see if the same part is fitted in the new ones.
