I ordered this replacement/upgrade PJ set from Thomann to install in my Tanglewater Classic J. It was only after I'd completed the installation yesterday and went to put the scratch plate back on that I noticed the P set are fractionally smaller than the stock Overwater pickups and there was an unsightly gap around them which I can't live with. Pity because they sounded excellent too. So, anyway, almost new DiMarzio PJ set which would be a worthwhile upgrade for many stock pickups. They'll be sent in their original box complete with installation instructions and also the foam (now cut) to place under them in the cavity, screws etc. The DP 126 PJ set are compiled of the DP122 Jazz and DP123 Precision pickups. Here's a link to the respective pages on the DiMarzio website: http://www.dimarzio....imarzio-model-j http://www.dimarzio....imarzio-model-p These are going for £76.00 on Thomann, wth postage of £10 to add too. I hope£55 delivered (to mainland UK) is therefore a fair price as these are absolutely as new. Update: REDUCED to £55 posted [Update: Please note that the DiMarzios are sold as a replacement set for stock so I think this means the OW pickups are slightly over standard size rather than the DiMarzios being under standard size. I'll get accurate measurements up when I'm in a position to do so though.] Thanks all. BC

Great guy to deal with. Just bought Pete's TC Electronic Staccato '51 and the transaction was completely painless and entirely amicable. He's very quick to respond to PM's etc., which always makes me feel more confident when dealing with people. Happy to answer a few questions I asked before we talked money and wasn't offended to do a bit deal negotiation either. I wouldn't hesitate to buy from him again. Mark

SOLD - TC Electronics RH750 - Never used
Bass Culture replied to Tim E's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
Balls, one of these is going to be my next amp purchase. I sold my RH450 and miss it (though the Reidmar I currently have is fine for the time being). When I read that these handle the lower frequencies better then the RH450 my heart was set on one. I really like the feature set and build quality. Still, timing is everything (us being bass players!), in another month or so...GLWTS. -
There must be a few of us Cestrians who make the trip over too. Colour me interested.

Yet more feedback of the gushingly enthusiastic variety for John, I'm afraid. I picked up one of the end of line Classic J Tanglewaters recently - a passive PJ configuration. Whilst it played brilliantly I wasn't that enamoured of the electrics - the blend was pretty crude and not very progressive, there was distinct centre either side of which the character of the prioritised pickup really predominated. Likewise the tone control seemed to be pretty on or off. I got a tone I liked but not a variety of tones I really liked. Luckily Discreet pointed me in John's direction and a brief flurry of emails followed before I decided on his 'dog's bollocks' option of the 2 stacked volume/tone pots pre-wired onto a new bell plate. I'm a numpty when it comes to electrics so when I say even I managed to install it with the help of John's very clear instructions with absolutely no problem, you can presume it really is a piece of cake. And now the bass sings - the sound is more refined, organic and usable across the whole spectrum; there's even noticeably less hum. I've not really played and haven't owned a passive bass for nearly 20 years and I'm honestly asking myself why the hell not now - it feels like there's as much tonal variation available now as on a decent active circuit. So, all in all, a positive experience you could say - great piece of kit from an absolute legend of a forum member. He is to passive bass electrics what John East is to actives, I'd suggest. Thanks, John.

'Crazy Little Thing Called Love' and 'Stuck in the Middle with You'. Not necessarily because they're 'bad' songs but simply because they have been in the set of one of my bands for - I swear to God this is true - over 10 f**king years!! I'd happily never hear either of them again for as long as I live.

Very fair review, Mark. I was taken with it myself but moved it on before I got too attached to it. I'm trying desperately to be a one bass kind of guy at present and my ACG will be back from Alan before too much longer, I'd guess. I think you're quite fair to point out the flaws in the finish but equally - as you so rightly say - they're £210 FFS! Great quality and sound for that price, and would put many a more expensive bass in the shade. Oh, I'd guess many of you have had dealings with Discreet before so it will come as no surprise when I say: Top guy. BC

Thanks for the kind words, Mark. A confidence inspiring transaction from my POV also - you reap what you sow, buddy!

Good technique definitely helps you to play 'better' (hem, hem) but, on the occasions I teach these days, I always stress that it should be a servant not a master. There are orthodox techniques with regard to finger/fret and left hand thumb placement but a good player will adapt them to what suits him or her, I think. I remember seeing the bass player with Renaissance live years ago ('Northern Lights' I think was their hit) - very accomplished he was too - and he didn't use the little finger of his left hand AT ALL. I'm not necessarily advocating that but it seemed to work for him. There comes a time when, if you've persevered trying to master orthodox technique and it ain't happening, try something that does work for you instead. Good technique is about preserving energy and reducing extraneous movement. If, by trying to adhere to applying 'good' technique on all occasions you're using more energy and increasing movement, adapt accordingly.

I've just sold my Squier Jazz Deluxe IV to Discreet and he is, quite simply, the kind of bloke that makes Basschat such a great place. Had a quick read of his feedback and based on that was quite happy to agree a deal that involved a couple of payments over a short period. Obviously a man not comfortable with being in anyone's 'debt' that went out the window and we were completely squared up with a few days instead. Not only that but our communications were frequent and fun; we exchanged several emails about playing and basses in general. Absolutely top guy who you could sell to of buy from with absolute confidence. Thanks for a great and pleasant transaction, Mark. Enjoy the bass.

Yes, but you will have a purty new byass thing to play with by then!...

I've not owned a passive bass for years now and have been thinking about adding one to my very small stable. As my ACG is away having some work done on it this seems like the ideal opportunity to pull the trigger on a Classic Jazz in CAR. Thanks for the 'head's up' Cachao - much appreciated.

Lozz196 - just bought a gig bag off him for my Reidmar, which he was kind enough to offer when he spotted my thread asking what others had used with them. Top man - bag was sent quickly and was just as he described - in excellent condition. You can deal with him with absolute confidence. Mark

Just sold my Trace AH 300 GP 12 SMX to Ryan and it couldn't have been an easier or quicker transaction. A price was agreed via PM and the money was sent the same day. I'm very happy to say that I found Ryan a thorough and trustworthy person to deal with and I wouldn't hesitate to do business with him again. Thanks, Ryan. Mark
Basses are too light to activate bathroom scales. You need to weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding the bass and subtract the first result from the second, leaving you with the approximate weight of the bass. This is the time-honoured 'bathroom scales' method.
Discreet - thanks for stating what now seems to be blindingly obvious. And I'm supposed to have the brains in the family! Anyway, the difference between Fat and Fat + Bass = 9lbs. That said, as our bathroom scales don't do ounces (and therefore, I assume, round up or down to the nearest lb) I'm guessing that means it could be as little as a bit over 8lbs... -

I've tried to weigh the bass on the bathroom scales after someone asked the question and - don't ask me why - they just wouldn't give a reading. I'm guessing it's a pretty average weight - somewhere between 8 - 9lbs. Doesn't seem overly heavy to me compared to other J types I've played anyway. Not much help, I know, but best I can do! -
I am so, so tempted to buy this as a backup. I have just bought one of these and it is truly incredible. Really not too heavy either. So GLWTS.Hope somebody buys it soon and takes the temptation away.
What was it Oscar Wilde said - he could resist everything expect temptation?
