FS/FT: Zoot Custom Fretless 4 - NOW SOLD

For sale: lovely Zoot Fretless Custom - NOW SOLD I bought this a few months ago from here on Basschat. It's a really beautiful bass which I just can't justify keeping hold of as I'm currently band-less and already own a Les Evans custom fretless. This is Chris's description from when he had it for sale, which I hope he doesn't mind me purloining - but there's nothing I can really add or say any better!: Neck Iceni carbon Graphite bolt on neck + ebony fingerboard. Nut Bell Brass Nut Width 38mm(Frender Jazz spacing) Fingerboard Flat finished, best quality african ebony, 1/4 lines to edge + side dots, unvarnished on playing surface, varnished to back and sides. Machine heads Black Schaller chrome m4's Body 1 piece sapele mahogony with bookmatch best grade flame maple top finished in high gloss aqua burst fading to black with solid black hi gloss to back Bridge ABM in black chrome with Shadow piezo's fitted to saddles Control Knobs Schaller black chrome knurled with centre dents Pick up Bartolini MM4C Switch 3 way-piezo only/piezo and bartolini/bartolini only Controls Bartolii TCT module bass/mid/treble (all centre dent for flat) and volume Strap buttons Schaller locking in black chrome Battery 6v from compartment in back Hard Case You'll notice that it has a carbon fibre neck with an ebony fretboard, which gives the stability and even tone of carbon fibre but with the woodiness of the ebony fretboard coming though. The Bartolini electronics are superb, and the Piezo mixed with the magnetic pickup is a very cool sound. The bass in is very good condition, the only thing of note is the varish has lifted slightly on the edge of the neck where it meets the ebony fretboard. I suppose the wood has expanded mildly over the last few years. It's a purely cosmetic issue, and if you're inclined quite easy to refinish yourself. With reference to this last point, I have now had the work done (by Mike Walsh, Mr Zoot himself), and am offering the bass at the price I bought it, but with this issue of the cracked lacquer now repaired. The eagle-eyed amongst you will notice I have also fit a Hipshot 4 string retainer. Just personal preference - the Gotoh 'bar type' always looked a bit cheap to me and the Hipshot one is less faffy as you can just feed your string into the slots from the top. In terms of playability and sound I really can't add anything to what Chris said originally. The quarter lines make it easy it get around and intonate accurately, even for someone like myself, who usually prefers full fretlines (I know, I know - sacrilege!) One thing I would mention is that I've added a shim under the neck to bring the action down a bit. This thing now plays like butter but there is a very minor 'blister' in the finish where the lacquer has lifted slightly at the edge of the neck pocket. It's not that noticeable but it is there and I wouldn't want to not mention it. Can't be seen from head on. You'll also see a slight knock on the rear of the top horn. Again, pretty minor. It does come with some paperwork between Mike and the original owner, which dates it from July 1998, and includes a hand-written note from Mike explaining the controls. I'm happy to post anywhere in the U.K. for £10 only. Trade-wise: hmm, don't know really, maybe something Warwicky/Laklandy/Sterlingy - 4 strings and fretted please Thanks for looking, enjoy the snaps: Any trial welcome, and I can probably even work out a short term (couple of months maybe?) payment plan, as Chris was kind enough to do for me too, for anyone with a current cash flow issue! Thanks all, Mark N.B. edited for typos.
I had a Zoot fretless last year. It was very heavy, but the build quality was very good and it sounded good too!
I'll get some photos of it up at some point - along with my fretted Chaser too!

I loved that. It wasn't about showing off your chops, which was surprising - in a good way. But what was I was really surprised by was how considered and sheer bloody MUSICAL it was - hell, at the risk of sounding incredibly patroninsing, I'd even use the word 'mature'. And I mean 'mature' in a way that quite a few people who've been playing a damn sight longer than you guys could only dream of. Fresh, thoughtful and different, I'm looking forward to hearing more - thank you.
I've just hit the button!
Very happy S12T owner here - you won't regret it.

I like these two clips. Takes me back to my yoof. Got a bit of a Psychedelic Furs vibe to it - no bad thing at all. Two thumbs good, say I!
Not to mention that I could at last get a hear of one of those Barefaced cabs, and have a chinwag with its owner now that the 'Barefaced Tour' has been stopped for some reason.
Daz, you're welcome to pop round and check the cab out anytime, if you like. Just shoot me a PM and we can arrange something. We're only in Upton. Mark
Went to see The Hexmen at the Swinging Arm last night, what a band. Have you seen them before? Steve.
The Hexmen? Never heard of them! Sounds like I'll have to keep an eye out/ear open for them on the strength of that recommendation though.
Amazing sounding bass and a tidy bassist!
I'm not even paying him, folks! Actually, I owe you a pint or two, Steve; really would be good to see you some time. You up to anything playing-wise yourself these days? (Oh, as Steve is too modest to point out, if the Zoot does indeed sound amazing it is, in no small part, due to the work he did on it!)

If any BC-ers are not gigging themselves tonight and are at a bit of a loose end we'd love to see you at The Bridge Inn on Tarvin Road in Chester, where my band, Trigger Fingers, are twanging our wires tonight, working our way through our set of poptastic covers. If any gear heads are interested I'll be brandishing my Zoot Chaser with ACG EQ01 filter-based preamp (Mmmm, hubba hubba), and TC RH450 through my Barefaced Super Twelve T. Hell, if I wasn't actually playing I'm sure I'g go along to take a look/listen myself!

So, what does it play/sound like then?

I recently picked this up from Chris, which works really well for me - quarter fret lines: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/155649-iceni-zoot-custom-fretless-for-sale-l800-ono/page__p__1386946__hl__zoot__fromsearch__1#entry1386946 Personally, I find I need a reference point on the top edge for every fret position; I'm ashamed to admit how far my intonation has been out on some recordings when I've not had them there for guidance. I also freely acknowledge that that's just me though - I'm in awe of how well some people can intonate with nothing more than the usual side dots for guidance!
The man works quick
Popped over to see him the week before last to take my fretless over for some work. We were speaking about a custom build and Mike mentioned he can turn them round in 8-10 weeks at the moment!

Anyone Out There With a Wal Fretless With a Coated Fingerboard?
Bass Culture replied to AndroWal's topic in Bass Guitars
the previous owner of the bass got the neck refinished in 2006 and it's happened again since. I suppose some superglue may work.
I'll have to see if I can get a guarantee out of Mike then! Chris - terrific bass btw. (Apolgies to OP for digressing) -
Some superglue in the gaps would probably sort that out I'd imagine. Then buff residue flat.
Bugger - wish I'd thought of that before I took it back to Mike Walsh to do the work after I bought it off Chris!! -

Exciting Original Rock band seek talented bass player

Just a thought, but it might help the fair bassists in this community if you give us a clue as to which part of our sceptred isle the band is twanging in... -
I can only echo the sentiments of previous posters - Chris was the perfect seller. Not only did he agree to take payment for the lovely Zoot fretless he sold me in two instalments but he regularly dropped me a line to touch bass (whooaahh - puntastic!) in the interim - sometimes about the deal, sometimes just to chat about bassy stuff. A great guy and a fantastic advert for BC; I wouldn't hestitate to deal with him again. Mark
here ya go - i had a bit of spare time this evening - he does quite a bit of sliding to certain notes which i haven't marked out but all the notes/timing are just about right page 1 http://www.flickr.co.../in/photostream page 2 http://www.flickr.co.../in/photostream hope you'll find it of some help p.s. i hope this isn't betraying any copyright type laws - if anyone thinks it is, let me know and i'll take it down :s
This is the kind of thing that makes me feel all squidgy inside, being a member of this Forum - someone's after some help with a bass part, can't find it anywhere, so someone on here with both the skill and thoughfulness sits down and transcribes it. Thank the Lord for Basschat and its intimidatingly generous and caring members!

Real pity you guys aren't slightly closer (I'm over in Chester) as I'd love to have auditioned for you. Still, happy hunting all the same. Mark
