1. Thanks for all the interest; makes me wonder whether I should have started off at £550 instead of £450 All PM's now responded to.
2. Things have gone a bit quiet on the playing front so I just can't justify having this knocking around collecting dust. The colour scheme is the best there is IMHO. The upgrades are Kent Armstrong pickups and a Gotoh 201 bridge, which adds to the stability and sustain without looking quite as hideous as a badass. I had to do a bit of neck adjustment when I first got this bass, but I've had no probs with it since. Plays brilliantly and has the beefy, burpy jazz sound you'd expect. You'll note on the headstock that it says 'American Traditional'; not quite sure what the relevance of this is. Comes with a hardcase. Pickup would be preferable (tea or coffee free of charge!), but will post if needs be. Looking for a cash sale at £450, so no trades unless really interesting 5 stringers. 3. I've recently come by a jazz with some Kent Armstrong PUPs in situ and I have to say that I am very very impressed. They manage to retain the typical honk, but with a real meaty depth to them as well.
4. Having looked at it again tonight, it really seems to be an issue with the bridge position rather than PUP's. This leaves me with two possible choices:- 1) find a bridge to go in the original screw holes with a 20mm spacing 2) re drill the current bridge 2mm to the right and slightly forward or back, of the current ones (a disaster waiting to happen!)
5. So why do you reckon it's thrown my string alignment out? The other things is that it's got some Kent Armstrong PUPs instead of the stock ones. I'm wondering if they might be bigger than the stock Fenders so the string doesn't bisect the pole pieces perfectly??
6. Am i correct in thinking that the string spacing on the Gotoh is 19mm? I have one on a '99 US jazz I've just bought and it's thrown the strings out of line with the PUPs and the G's sitting quite a way from the edge of the neck. Do I need a 20mm bridge?
7. Simple question: Having decided to go back to a jazz after having a go with a Stingray, should I shell out £250 on a cheap (eg Squire CVJ, VMJ, or Fender MIM) and put some mods on it or just spend the extra on a nice Japanese or US one? I'm quite into the idea of doing some of my own mods, but can't help but wonder whether the 'cheapness' will show itself in things I can't really influence (i.e. fret dressing, neck-body joint, deadspots etc...) What d'ya reckon?
8. What's the difference between these and the VMJ?
9.
In the classic theological debate, one must follow the scientific method - the onus is on the believer to prove God's existence, and so begins the vicious cycle... proof denies faith, and without faith, religion is meaningless.
...and therein lies one of the main points for confusion; people seem intent on confining God within the realms of science. It is illogical to conceive that a creator will then allow itself to be contain within the realms of it's creation. As such, I'm not sure science will ever categorically prove or disprove God's existence. Enter faith.
10. Tony, you don't need to apologise for anything in my view. You went somewhere & saw / heard something you wanted to tell us about so you did. No probs! The primary reason this thread has found itself diverging from where it was intended to be is that (IMHO) disrespect has, on occasion, been shown to the views and / or beliefs held by certain individuals. I have no problem with anyone disagreeing with my Christian belief and finding my faith in a Creator God that I can't touch, see, smell etc... a little bemusing or bewildering; but what I find causes issues such as those that have occurred in this thread is when individuals attack someone else because of their opinions or beliefs. Agree to disagree and move on. Discuss it by all means, but I see no reason to start throwing round inflammatory and degrading statements because of a difference of opinion. To refer back to mcgraham's bacon analogy; I personally love bacon. I could justifiably say that I find it difficult to understand how mcgraham couldn't like it, but it would be fair to say that to start calling him a delusional cretin because he doesn't like bacon the same way I do would, I hope you agree, be unnecessary.
11. Does nobody have a jazz or P they want to swap?
12. If I had £1k knocking around I'd take you up on your very kind offer, however.... I could stretch to the MM + £200 if that's any good?!
13. It is, but the Geddy's have never really rung my bell; I think it's those painted on black block inlays. Thanks for the offer, but I think I'll pass. FWIW - I may also be interested in a nice P bass as well.
14.
Tell me about it... True worship is beyond genre or style. But what is beyond me is why a great proportion of Christian/God-centric worship music is stuck in an apparent time warp. I love re-arranging songs and making them radically different, it just seems a shame that I've always got to do this. The new wave of such songs seem to be an ever-evolving but never-progressing parody of the songs that went before them. Mark
Alas, someone with whom to share my frustrations!! I know exactly what you mean Mark. Whilst the US Gospel seen pumps out some amazing tunes, I continue to be amazed at why the UK worship scene hasn't moved on from the very rock based Hillsongs type material. Sure, there's some fantastic musicians out there in the UK Christian music scene, but it's such a shame they don't have some of the best arrangements to play. And before anyone else says it, yes, I know it's more about the words / content, but wouldn't it be great to have some funky / souly / even reggae type music to accompany them?
15.
This would go SO well with my Orange SR4
And it can do just that for just £650! Go on treat yourself, it's nearly Christmas afterall
16.
He! My old 'Ray!!!!!! Fancy a P?
Hey MMM! What sort of P?
Where are you based? I'm interested.. Mick
I'm in Coventry.
17. I did see the Yammy, but I've tried 6'ers and they just aren't for me. Thanks anyway.
18. Looking to sell or trade this fantastic bass. It's had plenty of TLC whilst being with me so the only dink it has is on the front of the lower horn measuring about 2mmx3mm (compression dink so maintains the original colour). Only reason I'm looking to move it on is that I really don't need two 5 strings and the F-bass is going nowhere! I'd be looking for £650 cash sale (inc hard case, but not P&P) or would consider trading for a nice 4 string jazz upto this value. On the subject of trades (and I don't mean to sound arsey, but...) let's keep the offers sensible folks. Do not for one second think that I'm likely to say yes to a straight swap for a bass worth £350; I know it sounds daft, but it happens. If your bass is worth £450 please accept that cash will also be required. Mini-rant over Ta for looking.
19. The same can be said for many a bass or amp.... Markbass springs to mind! Gorgeous bass BTW. I've only ever heard a BG bass in the 'flesh' once, but that once was amazing. Best of luck with the sale.
20. What's the body wood on these and which PUP's does it have?
21. Are you open to trades or just interested in hard cash?
22. What is it about this bass that makes it such a pass-around? OOI - how do the villex affect the sound compared to the bass with the stock PUPs?
23. I like people who speak their mind, but I can't stand self-inflated arrogance; for me, JB is much more the latter than the former. Like someone has already said, putting your ideas forward is one thing, but saying that everything else is crap just isn't necessary. I can't deny that the bloke is an excellent musician, but I'd no sooner want to spend 5 mins with him over a pint than I would jump into the Thames in mid winter wearing nothing but a mankini. FFWI - I wouldn't fancy a drink with Macca either.
24. Have you played through any of the Markbass gear yet? If not, I'd strongly suggest that you do before making any decisions. I bought a MB head and cab on the back of the hype that surrounded their gear and the 'clear uncoloured tone'. Personally speaking, I was very disappointed. I fully understand that it's some people's bass amp nirvana, but for me it's a bit like Marmite; you either love it or hate it. A definite 'try before you buy'/
