Thanks for all your thoughts and comments. It is more rock style that I'm playing so I guess my gospel reference might have been a bit misleading. I also agree that it's only the positional playing that is probably a consideration because I very very rarely play an open Bb or anything below the D. Hmmm, I'm finding it difficult to reason against the comfort taking priority.

Having played 5 string for several years, I've recently tried a 4 and found it really comfortable and, dare I say it, liberating. I play in church mainly and I notice loads of Gospel players use either 5 or 6 so my quandry is whether the comfort of the 4 outweighs the dynamic range and positional playability of a 5? Your thoughts??

I've just come to the conclusion that I'm not a Bartolini man so I'm putting this up for grabs .This is without doubt the best 'feeling' bass I've ever owned and Mike Kinal is a master craftsman. The ONLY reason I'm considering letting this go is that I just can't get on with the Bartolini setup. I've even considered the idea of replacing the pickups and pre, but that would involve a pretty significant cash outlay so I'm trying this first. Body - pretty sure it's Alder Top - Goncolo-Alves Neck - 5 piece Maple (two flamed strips) with Purpleheart Fretboard - beautiful piece of Rosewood with MOP dot markers Pickups - Bartolini BC in neck position and BD in bridge (has Goncolo-Alves ramp fitted) Preamp - Bartolini Controls - Vol (push-pull active-passive), blend, treble, mid, bass. Three switches (EQ bypass, mid freq selection, coil tap between series, parallel and single coil) Tuners and bridge - not sure, maybe Hipshot or Gotoh - good quality either way. Through-body stringing available Weight - just under 9Ibs on the bathroom scales Newly strung with a set of Elites. Price - [s]£900 [/s] £850+ P&P (you would genuinely be hard pushed to find such a well constructed instrument for this price) Trades - I'd really like to get back to a more traditional jazz tone. Ideally in 5 string format. Thanks for looking and please get in touch if you have any questions. I would ask that anyone considering making a 'would you accept a Squire bass + £140' type offer, resist from pressing the 'Send' button. Since getting my Kinal 5 this just doesn't get a look in so it's up for grabs. This is slightly different from the current Ovangol necked / maple bodied LX's because this has a maple neck and cherry body. The Cherry body seems to help give a little extra warmth when compared to the usual maple body. Tone - very punchy with a nice warmth whilst retaining the typical Warwick growl. Condition - very good. No specific bashes or dings that I can see although the hardwear is tarnished in places, particularly on the bridge pieces. Electronics - It's an all MEC affair. There's some crackle on the volume pot which has appeared recently, probably due to limited use. A bit of lube should help resolve this. Price - Looking for £600 please Trades - would be interested in a nice 6 string, preferably a Yamaha, but I'm open to suggestions. Chords, double/triple stops & how they work....
Rumble replied to Rumble's topic in Theory and Technique
I've just received the Jonas Hellborg book.............and realised why I gave it away last time! It doesn't seem to show any inversions. Are there any books out there with a bit more detail. Maybe even a bit of text would be nice! -

Would you say that playing chords is easier on a 4,5 or 6 string bass? -

Are these what are known as inversions? First inversion starts with the 3rd, second with the 5th, third with the 7th? -

I'm sure I used to have that book knocking around somewhere - what's the betting I'll be able to find it though?! Thanks for the tips guys. -

I've seen some of Scott's stuff before, but I haven't seen anything on chord use. Doesn't he tend to be very theoretical in his approach?
