  1. New (that's pre-owned but new to me) bass day! SKC Bogart 5 string arrived yesterday, quick string change this morning and spent the day in the studio with it today. Plays great, records beautifully!

      Yeah to Bogarts! They’re excellent.

  2. I've had a couple of Wals, and it is reminiscent of them - it also does a good Andy Fraser tone soloed on the bridge pickup - great for all those 'Free' bass lines...
  3. OK, I'm game - what you got? I should add that it has to be 5 string, 35" scale, and 19mm bridge spacing...
  4. Thanks for taking the time to search for that. I did track Phil Winter's name down to Tunng a year or two ago - I wasn't sure if it was the same man, and I sent a message through their website, but never received a reply.
  5. A pre-EB Stingray that I picked up for £250 in a shop called Back Street Music in Edinburgh in 1981. The pickup was way out of alignment (no idea how it got through quality control!) but I had it messed about with over the next few years - refinished in white, scratchplate replaced with a little chrome ring round the pickup, Schaller bridge, brass nut. It was far from 'original' but it sang and played like no other bass I'd owned! Foolishly, I sold it when I couldn't make the rent just before Christmas 1985. I still have a copy of the receipt I gave the buyer - Phil Winter of Holdenhurst Avenue, Finchley N12. God knows where he (or the bass) are now, but I'd love to get it back. If anyone sees it, do let me know....
  6. Nice! Still for sale?
  7. Still here - a further price drop - treat yourself for Christmas!
  8. Thanks Acebassmusic. Ah, yes. The weener. I have some cream from the doc for that! Actually, I think it's Hungarian for veneer...
  9. Just replacing my signature, and can't find my feedback thread... sorry, am I being dim??

Nope - I had exactly the same problem and the search wouldn't find my thread either. Eventually had to go back through my email notifications to fine the link....bit pants....

You can use Google - 'search item - forum - basschat'. To find feedback it would be 'membername - feedback - basschat' ...not ideal, but it works.

Thanks everyone... as I approach the 'autumn years' I find absorbing new info a bit more of a challenge...

  10. Good point. I just thought at first glance it looked... well, a bit cheap and nasty!
  11. You’re quite right - that’s the very bass.
  12. I should start by saying that I'm no expert, and frankly I can't keep track of all the variations of the Jazz bass, but this one seems a bit odd to me. I'm not saying it's a faker, I'd just like to know if this is a genuine Fender Jazz - if it is, I've never seen one like it! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-Jazz-Bass-5-String-Excellent-Condition-Lovely-example/263342474386
  13. Interesting - that's more 5-string players than I expected. I've only played 5's since the early 90's, when I did a tour with a band where I had to copy the synth bass lines that had been on their album. Now I can't go back to a 4 - I miss the B string (or 'thumb rest', as I call it) too much! I do own one 4-string, but that's a re-issue of a Ibanez Black Eagle, that I desperately wanted when I was 16, and couldn't afford. It hangs on the wall in the lounge, and I just gaze at it and wonder where the last 40 years went...
  14. Following the example of our venerable colleague Les, I frequented a very nice purveyor of quality kebabs post-gig last night in Kingston-Upon-Thames. By the time we got there (about 1am) they had sold out of lamb donner, so I had a chicken donner instead. A little greasy, but quite palatable. Our visit all went without incident, but I found out this morning that after I left, the guitarist's missus was involved in an altercation with a bunch of lairly, drug-fuelled, loud-mouthed clubbers, who took exception to her simply because she's Asian. She's a fiesty lass, so she stood her ground, but although there were no physical injuries, she got pushed around and called some things that I won't repeat here. I hope (perhaps in vain) that when the perpetrators woke up this morning they felt thoroughly ashamed of themselves. A sad end to an otherwise lovely evening.

Ah, sorry to hear of such an incident :(
Glad to hear she stood her ground - more people need to step in, to make the perpetrators aware that their behaviour is unacceptable.....
PS. what with yourself and Les - have I logged on to "kebabchat" by mistake? ;)

      Mmmm, Kebabchat...

Have you tried having the pitta on the side so it doesn't go all soggy and you can mop up the leftover sauce with it?

The walking dead come out here too in the early hours. Nobeeds really. I don't think they would get away with victimising an Asian looking lass ( or any lass) here. Somebody would definitely step in. Besides, virtually all the takeaways are owned by Asians and all the taxi drivers that pick up on the long 'food stretch' are Asian too. Wouldn't be long before the walking dead were given the Rick Grimes treatment!

  15. DPD... what a shower of cowboys! Despite multiple requests, they continue to leave stuff on my doorstep without getting it signed for. Expensive stuff!!

I've had one or two issues with a few couriers
Once, a passing stranger knocked on my door to say he'd picked up a small parcel with my address on it....
It was lying in the gutter some 60 or 70 yards from my house, and some kid had kicked it across the road!
It wasn't bass or music-related gear, but it was fairly delicate. Fortunately, it had been really well packed
My front garden / drive is 20 feet long - Had the courier just left it on the pavement? Grrr :(

Maddening. The thing that rankles is I had an email from the supplier the day before stating that ‘safe place’ delivery was not an option, and a signature was required because of the value of the item (nearly a grand). As I knew I was unlikely to be at home I logged in via the DPD app and changed the delivery to my neighbour, which was duly confirmed by email. I got the alert with the one-hour delivery window, and got another alert saying it had been delivered, complete of a photograph of the box, left sitting on my doorstep! Needless to say, no signature was obtained. I did consider whether I could just say I didn’t receive it as it wasn’t signed for, but I’m too honest...

Royal Mail are buggers for delivering their own 'signed for' packets without even trying to get a signature too.  They clearly set the bar for how other firms behave in our country.

  16. That's a shame. Apparently I was one of the few who loved the headstock and wanted a Shark 5!
  17. Just tried to go to the D Lakin website, but it appears to have gone. I did see a post on the Lakland group on Facebook purporting to be from Dan, asking for submissions of photos of 1994-2010 (pre-Hanson) basses for a forthcoming book, but the email has a URL that is a tyre reycling company's website (lakincorp.com). Family connection perhaps! So has D Lakin basses ceased trading? Anyone know?
  18. Now that really is seriously rare! The Black Eagle was the bass I lusted after as a teenager but could never afford, then Ibanez did a 40th Anniversary re-issue a couple of years ago and I managed to get hold of one. It's lovely - most of the time I just hang it on the wall in the lounge and look at it. Your Antoria is even better. I'd love to be able to put the pair of them up there side by side, but the missus wouldn't stand for it! GLWTS.
  19. Just got a set of Newtone strings... never heard of them until a few weeks ago, and initial impressions are very good. Quite a bit firmer than my usual D'Addarios, but full, bright and consistent. I shall report back after tomorrow night's rehearsal...

Yeah, I ordered on their website and the options were very comprehensive!

I always found Newtone helpful.  I had a set of five DBEs made to order.  I got them weeks quicker than the order I had placed at the same time with a major Derby shop - Cackle and Run.  For me there is a bonus in that it's nice to support a manufacturing business in my area.

I brought my Steinberger in to the old workshop and it was measured up to make perfectly tapered B and E strings.  They've gone onto better premises now.

I also started using them on my Dingwall a while back as I didn't like the standard gauges that were available, and I'm able to order a custom set to my own specs. They are great  strings and I like supporting a British company. More people definitely need to know about them!

  20. Pictures re-added bump...
  21. I know what you mean - when I listen back to several my songs from years gone by, it feels like they were written (and recorded) by someone else! Perhaps the best way to view it is to just count yourself lucky someone wants to use one of yours...
