1. His book 'Eminent Hipsters' is a good read too, and quite witty with it.
2. For sale is a Lakland 55-94, quite an early one, made in 2000, in a beautiful deep gloss black. It has an ebony fingerboard, Bartolini pickups and preamp, and is in extraordinary condition for its age. I'm only the second owner, and I imported it from the States in January. I honestly think the original owner just looked at it, which you can't really blame him for - it's hardly been played, and as such is almost totally unmarked. It has a removable cream pearl scratch plate, courtesy of The Gallery, who also fretted it - it started life as a lined fretless. These earlier examples of the 55-94 have a big, fat, creamy tone, and it's a dream to play. It's an absolutely fabulous bass, but I have to... what's that horrible word... downsize, due to unforeseen circumstances. Comes complete with a cream G&G case. I'm looking for a sale only, so sorry, but no trade offers please. NOW SOLD.
3. I'm guessing it's exactly the same preamp, just with a Lakland plate. £10 more, though! The DJ5s are great basses anyway, but the East pre transformed mine tonally. Really worth the money.
4. The East J-Retro is fantastic, and an easy fit - no soldering involved. It comes fitted on a plate, and just drops straight in, you connect the pickups and away you go. All you need is a small flat-tip screwdriver.
5.
Not sure that is the same Karen Lawrence? The one I have in mind fronts(or fronted) Blue by Nature, sort of country-style blues band. Thinking about it, she is unlikely to be in a kitchen anywhere in England, and is probably 10 years too young, but certainly got the pipes to qualify. Without wishing to hijack the thread, here is Ms Lawrence swaying her hips rather interestingly and generally giving it some welly.
By jove, that young lady can sing and no mistake, and has certainly got something about her..... in fact her gyrations seem to have brought about a case of the Tim Henmans.....
6.
I can trade my dj5
Thanks for the offer, but I already have one. Great basses!
7. There's another issue here nobody seems to have picked up on... those are clearly very old photos of Penelope Keith. I expect she was in a bit of a tight spot after they cancelled 'To The Manor Born'. I bet the guitar's not even hers.
8.
Bump for a good price.
Thanks. That looks like my bass's USA big brother in your avatar....
9.
You mean it's not birsdeye maple?
...birdsh*te maple perhaps... seriously though, they're great basses, but a 10-minute polish-up would make a world of difference. I'm up in London tomorrow - I'm tempted to message him and volunteer to drop by and clean it!
10.
Dam I just bought a dj5 I would of have bought this argh
They're no law says you can't have both... make me an offer!
11.
Wasn't she known for her thlide guitar playing?
Oh yeth, I had forgotten about her!
12.
I must admit that I'd not heard of Jenny Haan or Babe Ruth Band, so have done some Googling - wow, what a top band, and a front person with a powerful presence and voice and unique style. What a great kitchen find! I'm just imagining how excited you are at the moment. Here's one of my favourites so far: http://youtu.be/jad9YFROKuw
Great performance. It did look like only the lead vocals were live, though - the guitar solo and percussion/BVs weren't exactly in sync. Interesting typo in the end credits too - unless there was an artist in the 70's called 'Bonnie Raith'??
13. I'll never understand why a seller asking for top dollar for something can't be bothered to put up decent photographs, or even give the thing a quick clean! A very pretty bass, though, under the fingermarks.... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181337245552
14. Sonja doesn't start with a J, though...
15. Blimey, I used to lust after those when I was a lad. Back in 1976, one of the local music shops where I grew up had a black eagle and a standard Antoria jazz for sale. I took the standard jazz out 'on approval' - I wanted the black eagle really, but it was a bit more expensive. Lo and behold, on the way to rehearsal that night, I dropped it and knackered the finish, so I had to buy it. The shop owner very graciously let me pay it off at a fiver a month. Needless to say, it took some time even at 1970's prices. Even after nearly 40 years, the black eagle still looks good to me...
16. Still for sale...
17.
what's the weight?
It weighs 4.1kg on my electronic scales, so not that heavy for a 5, and good balance.
18. Blimey, takes me back. Whatever happened to John Wilson, who played bass on the original album?
19. For sale is my Lakland 55-02 Deluxe in Amber with a rosewood board, fitted with a Jeannie's white pearl 55-94-style removable scratch plate. Made in 2007, Lakland pickups and preamp, excellent overall condition, just a few scratches on the back that I couldn't even photograph, and a small crack in the lacquer below the controls. Also included is a worn but perfectly serviceable lined case - it didn't come with the bass when I bought it, but it fits well and will protect it during shipping. A new set of D'Addario EXL170-5SL strings have just been fitted. A really eye-catching and great sounding bass. Looking for a straight sale only, no trade offers please. NOW SOLD PENDING PAYMENT.
20. They're from the reunion tour - if they were from the 70's or 80's they'd REALLY be worth £7!
21. It's for playing 'Big Bottom' on....
22. Kid Charlemagne by Steely Dan. I'd have to find a band who would want to play it live of course, but first I'd have to learn it...
