Whilst I broadly agree with this it is probably because I am closer to your age. Things may well change in the future. As technology becomes cheaper and with traditional pub venues closing all over the place could we see a time where bands play from a room which has cameras installed and the sound is streamed live to pay per view type audiences sat at home watching it on their computers? Without that audience interraction it wouldn't be the sort of gig I'd find much fun to play personally but it would change the whole dynamic of bands going 'out there' to play live. Bedroom players forming bedroom bands and playing bedroom gigs to millions of bedroom fans. All a bit weird but it could happen one day.
Oh dear god, no. I think I and a million others would storm the seats of government before that happened.
I've regularly got good gigs out of doing a bad gig, good bands have grown out of bad bands and I've met up with many good players. If you're out there gigging you're in with a chance of progressing. Sit at home and you go nowhere.
I was just sitting here thinking that the gig I did last night in a little bar to try and showcase the new band and get some better gigs was too bloody hot, too bloody loud, and worth only pennies - why the hell did I do it? But then I read the above - well said sir. A much-needed dose of positivity!

Good morning and welcome! I seem to be the first out of bed today, but as you're several hours behind the UK, you may have already headed for yours... I hope you can bring a bit of sunshine with you when you post - I've just been watching the weather forecast, and we've got snow on the way over here. Looking forward to your contributions.

I play with both covers bands and original bands and artists. I do it for the fun, for the money, and to be able to occasionally bask in the reflected glory of some of the incredibly talented people I've been fortunate enough to share a stage with. On the down side, my personal experience is that although many a cover band member can be guilty of posturing and preening in front of an audience, bands and artists playing original material are too often far worse offenders in this respect. I've done the rounds of the London originals gig circuit over an extended period, and despite the fact that many bands and solo artists are impressively well prepared with posters, flyers, CDs, websites, MySpace, Facebook and Twitter feeds, the general standard of songwriting and performance tends to be inversely proportional to the smugness of too many of the individuals involved. There are exceptions - one singer songwriter who went on to achieve national radio airplay and big-name support tours really impressed me when the band I was in played on the same bill as him at a small West London venue that used to be a public toilet. Some of you will know where I mean! I was so impressed I went up to him afterwards and asked for a copy of his EP, which I was quite prepared to pay for. "Cool" he said, and went off to get one without further comment, and on returning, looked around and said loudly and sarcastically "Where's my sale??". He hadn't even taken the time to take note of what his potential customer looked like. Despite his subsequent brush with fame, he has since vanished without trace. All this has served to make me acutely aware that what to the performer may be artistic expression, can often simply be public masturbation, regardless of who wrote the songs played. I'm not suggesting that any of us should stop performing, but maybe just give some thought to what we do and why, which I hope is what the OP intended when he started this thread...
Bump for a wonderful instrument and (I reckon) an unequaled example of the industrial designer's art. And yes, a genuine rarity - especially as it still has its plug-in leg rest (a far more satisfying design than the folding thing on the later XL basses). Actually it's such a rarity that I wonder if its my old one. Did you buy it from a music shop in the Wandsworth/Clapham area Dave? If I had £1500 to drop on a bass currently in the Basschat classifieds it'd be this one. Phil
Hi Phil Thanks for the complimentary words. It didn't come from Wandsworth though - the previous owner was in Kent. Are you sure I can't persuade you to treat yourself??

Reluctantly offered for sale is my Steinberger L2. Very good overall condition for a 30 year old, minimal fret wear, some pitting to face of the pickups, light scratching to the body surface from use, but no cracks, gouges or chips. Complete with plug-in leg rest, original bag, original strap, string locking screws (can use standard or double ball ends) and allen keys (probably not original). Bag and strap are a little grubby, and although they have never been allowed to get damp during my ownership, have what appear to be some historic mould spots. The bass is not affected in any way. Straight neck with approx 1.5mm relief, plays beautifully, no bridge, saddle or claw issues. Pickups & circuitry work well, pots still nice and tight. Dave NOW SOLD, THANKS FOR ALL YOUR INTEREST!

I can't seem to edit the original price or trade value, which included my EBS TD660, which has now been sold, but still for sale are my lovely EBS Neoline (neodymium) cabs. Read on! 1) Neo 410 cab, paid over a grand for it new less than a year ago, only gigged 3 times so not even run in, excellent condition, with Roqsolid padded cover. 2) Neo 115 cab, very good condition, with Roqsolid padded cover. Amazing gear, but I've got to downsize. (Don't feel too sorry for me - I've still got a TD650 and a Proline 410) Sorry, but I'm not looking for any trades, sale only. Collection much preferred (near junction 10 of the M25 Surrey) but I will ship within the UK for £30 per item. Dave BOTH CABS NOW SOLD

Yikes! Looks like they're set in epoxy of some sort - I hope you've got a sharp knife and steady hands...

This is the underside of the alnico pickup on my MM Stingray 5 Classic, taken today during a string change because I'm also confused by the ceramic/alnico debate! I suspect it will be very difficult, if not impossible, to introduce pole pieces into a ceramic pickup unless the 'framework' is the same. A straight swap with a SD Basslines or similar would be infinitely easier, and as an earlier posted suggested, much easier to swap back if you don't care for the results! Ernie Ball famously don't sell replacement pickups, so your options are a little limited.
I have n't bought strings for about 4 years, need to maybe sort that out.
I recall an interview with Robbie Shakespeare years ago where he said he felt his strings were just settling in when they'd been on for about 2 years... so yours should be fine! -

I've been using D'Addario EXL170-5's for years... 45/65/80/100/130 gauge nickels, and the SL super long scale version for my 35" scale through-strung basses. The best feeling, most consistent strings available, IMHO, although Ernie Ball Super Slinkys are pretty good too. I used Rotosound Swing Bass when I first started playing many years ago, but gave up on them in the mid-80's when I got 3 sets in a row with a dead string. Another bass player I met on a gig not long ago told me he had the same experience with Rotosounds just recently - for such a big name brand, it's just not good enough in today's market with so much competition. Needless to say I've now converted him to D'Addarios! Paul Herman at Wal also fits D'Addario nickels on his new basses. -
Just a bit of info for anyone who knows about Paul Turner's fantastic band Shuffler - they're playing the Jazz Cafe in London on Good Friday, 29th March. There's some links below including some tracks on soundcloud that will be released as an EP shortly - WELL worth a listen! I've already got one of these in black sparkle, also with a John East preamp. A fabulous bass, and not coming up for sale so often these days. They are still being made, but the new colours are very drab in comparison to this beauty, and these Korean ones are much better than the newer Indonesian made version IMHO - I've owned both. Bump for a fantastic bass. Best of luck with the sale.

Ended with no bids (not surprising) and just been relisted with a starting price of £1450... I don't think that's going to result in a sale either somehow...
