All I was told when I bought it was that it was fashioned and/or assembled by the aforementioned Gus... I've never had occasion to try and trace him, but I can certainly make some inquiries...
I know someone who knows someone who knew him...
Wow - only just spotted this, how come Fender are suddenly putting a lot of the custom builders to shame with all these 'exotic' necks!
It's a real beaut - especially when you look at some of the NOS custom shop basses and how 'ordinary' they look in comparison. All good stuff, but this one is undoubtedly a little extra special.
Cant say Ive ever seen anything like that before--love Tele style and five strings--lovely finish.Sorely tempted--any interest in a Status Energy 5 string as a swap?
Thanks for the offer, and it is tempting, but my Empathy might get jealous!

For sale, a bit of an oddity... a custom made 5-string in the style of a '51 Precision. 35" scale, twin Bartolini soapbars, and a Aguilar 18v 2-band preamp. Being a fan of the early P/Tele bass look, a thing of rare beauty, IMHO. When I play it, it makes me feel like I'm Tony Reeves. All I know about its origins is it was made by a chap called Gus who lives somewhere down in Kent, has made many basses over the years in his workshop as something of a hobby I understand, and did a damn fine job with this. I bought it several years ago, and it originally sported one single coil pickup, but when that expired unexpectedly, I got Martin Petersen of Sei fame to fit the two Barts and preamp. It weighs in at a shade over 10lbs, but balances well and consequently feels light on the shoulder. Excellent condition throughout, except for a chip in the finish on the back of the headstock, shown in the photos. Final price drop to an insane £500 (was £650) (was £750), and I'll throw in a heavy duty Ritter gig bag with it. Only on here 'til the weekend, then it's off to eBay... Dave Video now uploaded of me noodling aimlessly, but you can hear what it sounds like! Recorded straight into an Apogee Duet, flat eq. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvRLYih5G7Y NOW WITHDRAWN FROM SALE - SOLD ELSEWHERE

For sale is a beautiful bass that I imported new from the States myself 3 weeks ago, and despite it being a truly glorious instrument, it's not for me... sadly I think I may have spent too many years playing snarling 5-string graphite things with preamps... Custom Shop 1960 (stack pot) light relic Jazz in Olympic white, matching headstock, gold hardware, mint green pickguard, rosewood board, the most beautiful birdseye/flame maple neck, brown tolex case and all the case candy - strap, lead, manual, certificate etc., as brand spanking new as a relic'ed bass can be! Light, at only a little over 9 lbs. Never gigged, been out of the house once to a rehearsal, fear took hold and I put it back in the case. £1800 (was £1995) (was £2250) SOLD SOLD SOLD....

Jools Holland Show - Still Worth Watching?
How has Jools Holland managed to get away with it for so long? He always looks so ill at ease. The guy manages to make each appearance on telly look like his first. He is incoherent and got the interviewing skills of Katie Price. As a consequence I don't watch as much as, perhaps, I should. Like the format though.
He was exactly the same back in the days of The Tube, although the smarm quotient has increased somewhat. What the programme needs is a co-host like Paula Yates who didn't give a f*ck, even when they came back to air unexpectedly after an ad break and the mic picked her up talking about some guy with a 12" d*ck... anyone remember that?? Quality viewing! -
Jools Holland Show - Still Worth Watching?
The addition of Hugh Lawrie to this week's later is an all-time low for me.
It was poor... shades of Steve Martin and his banjo a year or two back - interesting for a moment or two in a car-crash sort of way, but not worthy of inclusion on a live music TV programme. As for the rest of the bands... Fleet Foxes were pretty good, and Vintage Trouble were briefly entertaining, but ultimately just yet another victory of style over content. As for KD Lang - what a voice! - and her band put an wonderfully shambolic rocked-out twist on Constant Craving. I was holding my breath expecting it all to fall apart! Jools Holland still scores a 10 on the Punchometer for me though... -
The "cult of personality" is at epidemic levels. The vast majority of people are sheep, willing slaves. Money needs to be circulated, trends are therefore geared towards lowest common denominators of entertainment. It's been this way since mass communication and with globalization reaching a zenith it will saturate and feed upon itself until weird and strange forms emegre, the like of which we can't imagine.
Quite. And after seeing Jools Holland very ungraciously bundle the hapless Justin Lee Collins and his film crew out of a rehearsal studio for daring to collar Gilson Lavis (former drummer with Squeeze, now in Jools's "Rhythm & Blues Orchestra") to ask if he fancied re-forming with Difford and Tilbrook for a one-off gig, I came to the conclusion that Mr Holland must be a huge cult... -
If you can ping it to CIty Link in Guildford (7mi) on a Saturday morn, I'm for it. Cheers
Sorry, it would be a mammoth task to try and box it, which any carrier would require. It would also cost a wad to send it, I'd think. Don't know what it weighs. Collection in person is the only realistic option.
The best sounding cab ever, IMO. The rollbar makes it real easy to move, and it has a kickplate for getting it up onto the back 2 seats of yer car. £450 is a great price for this, is it one of the older American built ones?
Yup, it's a US made one (just added a pic of the rear label) not sure of the age, I didn't buy it new. Shame it has to go, but it's just not getting used. Priced to sell, as you correctly noted!
Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions for a good, bright set of roundwounds that last well (and don't cost too much!)? Your thoughts would be much appreciated.
D'Addario XLs. Not the cheapest, but you really can't go wrong. Ernie Ball Slinkys are remarkably similar too...

It is a weird old market for these, because despite being genuinely great basses, some people are completely dismissive of the Steinberger, although you can be pretty certain none of them have ever even picked one up. I've had three XL2s and an L2 over the years, and I still have a very rare XL-5W 5-string - I've referred to them all as my 'Marmite' basses - people either love them, or really, really hate 'em! Post some pictures. You might be surprised at the level of interest. LRH
To be honest, I've seen very few people using them lately. There was one I saw that sold in Europe for 2200 euros. It was in better nick than mine and was totally original, but the serial number was in the 1300s. That's what makes me think mine is just as valuable. If I can't get near that amount or swap it for a nice Jazz, I'll keep hold of it. Thanks for the info.
