1. I had a short romance with a Steinberger XL-2 this summer, and the bass is amazing. It's not as lightweight as one would expect by the looks of it, but a fantastic sounding and playing instrument. But I couldn't justify hanging on to it due to a Ken Smith bass I purchased earlier this year. I also have a Riverhead bass, not the Unicorn but the Steinberger copy. And for the price paid, that one is even more amazing. I had to swap out the electronics on it because the neck pickup stopped working, and the only pickup I found that fit the routing was Status pickups. And now the bass plays and sounds amazing. Not anything like the Steinberger, which has a very distinct sound, but it has its own vibe going. And it sounds a little more woody than the Steinie. My needs for a portable bass is fully covered by the Riverhead. I also have owned a Warwick Nobby Meidl, which was also a fantastic instrument. Rare nowadays. And Tom Clement built me a 6-string headless with a singlecut body, and although not quite as small, it fit in a guitar bag. Great bass, too. They take a little getting used to. But I like them.
2. If the only complaint about the bass is the headstock... It's a great instrument at the price point. What else could we ask for, really? So, how does it matter that Marcus has his name on it... We play bass, don't we? Not pose with them? Ken Smith was a successful musician too, at one point, now he's more recognized for his basses... How's that any different? And personally, I play a Smith and a Sire MM bass. :-)
3. It is a wonderful instrument and it's served me well. I have sound samples available if anyone is interested.
4. The bass is now sold
5. It means that the vibration in one string is not very affected by vibrations in another string. The tone sounds very much the same played alone and played with other tones on other strings
6. Maybe I should increase the price?! *hehe* No, I'm fine with the price. And I agree, it is a great instrument, very piano-like sound. It's the bass I have with the least cross-talk between notes. So it's a great bass for those looking for something different. And the action is to die for. If someone wants to pay more, I will not deny them *hehe*
7.
I think you are mad to get rid of this beauty - I've only got 1 Clement, and I'm never selling Good luck with the sale. I seem to remember you have a whole collection of Clement basses!
Thanks! Yes, I have a collection, it's been up to 10 at the most. I just had to reorganize a little, my collection also included a host of other basses, and there are no room anymore.... so just trying to free up some space and cash.... :-)
wow silly questions :- but is it balanced and is it a stretch playing the fretless with the freteed neck in the way ? kindest regards ziigy
It balances really well. No worries there. And the bass is around the same weight as a slightly heavy Fender Jazz, even if there's an extra neck on it. So it's pretty lightweight. It takes a little to get used to having that other neck next to your hand. But it works fine. It's a good thing that the fretless is the bottom of the two, as it makes it easier to help intonation by eye sight (the angle for the upper neck would make it more difficult to intonate visually). I am probably crazy to sell it. But I need to finance a new instrument for my girlfriend, so the instrument that gets sold first gets sold. If I cover all I need with something else, I'm keeping this one :-)
8. For sale is my brand new and unique Clement #359 Angel bass. This bass is a 4-stringer, with TV Jones Thunder'tron pickups. This bass is a "retro meets boutique" instrument! The body draws lines from Thunderbirds, lollipop chrome tuners and TV jones pickups gives associations to the 60s. All following the usual standard and sound quality of Tom Clement's bass works. The body is mahogany with myrtlewood top, the neck is one-piece roasted maple with a gorgeous cocobolo fingerboard. The bass is strung with TI Jazz flats.
