I could never get on with the older ABM series but that ABM600 EVO4 is a different beast. Apparently it has a different power amp and thats what makes a big difference. I'd cheerfully have another one.
-
I always had it switched off as i didn't think it improved anything...
-
I know exactly what you mean..... it seems to really bring out the differences.

If you're using a Precision and a Stingray you've got 2 significantly different and characteristic basses - the P with the low mid push and the Ray with a big lower end and sizzly treble. It'll be hard to get a similar sound from both i think without big changes at the amp. I remember with the Ray having to cut the bass dial back a fair bit, drop the 180hz a tiny bit (it took the honk out), push the 340hz a touch, crank the mid dial about 3/4 of the way up and push all 3 mid/treble slider a fair bit. The treble dial didn't seem to do much. Looked weird but sounded great. This was thru a couple of Barefaced cabs that work better over eq'ed anyway so it may be a bit much depending on your cabs. The Precision baked in sound seems to suit the amp with much more minimal eq. The low mid grind it has works really well with a flatter setting or even with the scoop engaged and a bit of bass roll off at the amp. And yes, just going up or down a couple of db on the sliders made a massive difference sound wise at each frequency - particularly those low mid ones.

So, I’m thinking about a new head, Class D with a valve pre....

I had a Hartke LH500 for a while - you're right, lovely piano sort of clean sound available from it. So it sounds like clean and sparkly but with rich harmonics is what you're after? Maybe a Genz Benz Shuttle 9.2 or upwards would work for you if you can find one - they pop up on here sometimes. They do clean very well and the valve adds a bit of fruit rather than grind. Or you may well find the GK MB Fusion will do it as you first thought. The Terror Bass is probably a bit fuzzy rather than clean though. Theres a few good deals on Orange 4 Strokes that have been floating around recently and a few guys on here have them incoming - that could be worth a look (apparently it does a clean version of the Terror Bass sound) -
You're on the wrong thread here buddy....you're only allowed in if you want to slate Jools or the ethnic/yoof/crumbly wannabes that are on it. Go start your own thread..... 😉
-
They're gradually sneaking him in as Jools's replacement for next year - he's getting a weekly slot for 2019 😂

He was the smart one from Star Wars....they wrote him out so he's looking for a new career in music

What sort of stuff are you playing? Its easier to dodge some incompatible suggestions if you give us an idea of what you're trying to achieve :-) and what do you think your TC is missing (or needs improving on?) I used a GK MB Fusion for a few years - probably did about 100 gigs with it - and eventually moved it on because i figured out i didn't like the class D lack of booty effect after trying most of the usual suspects. Its bloody loud though. I also use similar cabs to you. I looked at a TC BH as a potential replacement hoping it would be an improvement but it sounded too flat and sterile to my ears compared with the GK - is that what you're finding? I actually ended up with an Ashdown ABM600. Lovely bit of kit for a grindy rock gig and unusually for an Ashdown ABM had plenty of sparkle and a fixable pillowy bottom end. Great amp. Not massively heavy but not small like your TC either. BUT I've since discovered a Quilter Bass Block 800 - if you want tiny, massively loud capability with headroom and a class D that doesn't sound like a class D - i.e it doesn't get compressy and shouty as you crank it up, it just stays hefty, clean and gets physically louder then its worth a look. It doesnt sound or behave like a class D - its more like something with a bit of iron in the power amp. You have to learn the controls for 10 minutes to figure it out cos its a bit different to 'normal' amps. The downside is its a bit naturally treble shy but you can add that in easily and cheaply if you use a preamp pedal or graphic in front of it. The best thing about it is it does warm heft, pant shaking open valveylike booty with ease (if thats what you need....) They're about £480 new if you look around.... And i would totally agree with going secondhand on this forum. You'll find most users are great guys/gals that are easy to deal with and have a common interest. I've been using it for about 7 years and have had nothing but great experiences buying and selling. More importantly you wont lose your shirt if end up with something that doesn't quite do it for you - just turn it round and move it on... -
I've never done that........honestly.......;-)

Excellent bits of kit imho - i have them on all my basses. We do a few specific songs and links that don't give me time to retune manually - i used to manage it but the detuner makes the whole process simple and fast. When set up and tuned correctly they are reliable - the only issue i've ever had was on a Spector Euro and now believe a snaggy nut (ooh missus...) was the culprit rather than the detuner. And the weight difference is miniscule - you're adding a thin plate, a little screw and a spring effectively. Try one - the best way to tell is to give it a go Oh and if anyone has a black GB7 one spare i'll have it off you for my new toy :-)
-
I agree - those 2 were my faves as well....
-
Stumbled over this little demo on YouTube - lovely to not have a slap fest for a change. Unusual (read interesting) choice of basses and some creative playing. The Peavey was my surprise favourite....

Yep, i seem to remember i bought an East MMSR from you a few years ago to turn a 3 band Stingray into a 2 band sounding one :-) And it worked to a point - it gets you 90% of the way there. Not quite but as good as you'll get i think. TBH it makes it a more versatile bass with the sweepable mids. I moved the East equipped Ray on and still have a normal 2 band one - they still have a certain something baked into them.

We use one of these Konig and Meyer ones - its made for 5 guitars but that includes acoustics so you can actually get a few more in safely if you want to. Nitro safe and because the guitars stand straight up vertically you can put it right next to the wall - its nice and narrow. Built like a tank too.... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Konig-Meyer-17515-000-00-Guardian-Guitar/dp/B004W1YYZA/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1546036641&sr=8-5&keywords=konig+meyer+guitar+stand

Now traded thanks EBS TD660. Price dropped to £600 and postage option added...... Bought brand new in November 2017 and has a transferrable warranty for peace of mind (receipts available). Great condition and in a Gator case. 660 watts with a proper power section. Selectable valve preamp/drive section, built in top quality transparent compressor (one of the best i've used) and a notch filter for difficult rooms. Not a class D amp so it has proper heft and slam - can be gnarly or clear and has real weight to the notes. Its an absolute beast pro level amp that doesn't weigh a ton! Ideally collection only from near Stansted Airport but i'm also happy to drive a bit for a meet by arrangement as I'm regularly around Essex/Herts/Kent/Suffolk/London and M25 area for my job. Its in a Gator case and i could bubblewrap and box it for a courier if you're happy to arrange and take responsibility for it (I would need full payment via bank transfer beforehand though - I have 100% Ebay feedback and the same on Basschat) Not really interested in trades as I have too much stuff but you're welcome to try me 🙂 Possibly a small PJB combo of some sort maybe??? Christmas is always a dodgy time for gigs - we had one venue in early December ask us to play quietly in the corner and change our set with a weeks notice to "top 40 party songs as we have a couple of works Xmas dinners in". We're a rock band and they know damn well we are......It was just an unsubtle way to get us to drop the gig so they didn't have to pay a band while they were making money from food. And then a week later we played to a pub full of whizzed dickheads with no help from the landlord when they started invading the stage, throwing beer around and generally falling over everyone and everything. The landlord just laughed and kept serving them till we stopped playing at 11.30pm and refused to start until he had the situation under control. I might take next December off........

Gary bought my gigbag. Top bloke - transaction and collection smoother than a shaved sealion.

Not for one of these, thats way too cheap - its a Stingray Classic not a normal Stingray. Looks like its pretty mint with a nice flame neck too so easily £1200+

A Zon Sonus Standard 4 string bass and 6 Dunlop Ultex 2mm picks :-) I had a pair of lounge pyjama bottoms and a new scratchplate for my Precision on my list but it went a bit wonky........
-
Went to the local guitar shop to grab a little something - fatal mistake. They have a pretty standard bass selection in there, mainly Fenders and Ibanez's and rarely anything more unusual. And this was hanging on the wall.....i tried one of these years ago in a shop and was close to pushing the button then and have never seen one since. Mint condition and a good price i believe. I had a 10 minute go on it just to see what it was like - lovely sound and easy to play, just felt like a quality bass. Anyway i hadn't gone in there for a new bass so headed home. And you know when you start itching and the mind starts turning over..........and the missus is an enabler damn her!!!! So here is the new addition - A Zon Sonus Standard 4 :-)
-
The 3 band has a high pass filter built into the eq and it takes some of the booty out. The 2 band doesn't have it so sounds fatter, warmer and generally bigger. I've had both and prefer the 2 band personally.
-
Was it that Fortress in Bristol? I was thinking about that one but he had already sold it earlier this year apparently and something didn't quite stack up for me
-
3 band eq.....thats the issue Try a 2 band - it'll take your fillings out
