Sounds great here: I love my Sandberg Basic for its Stingray-esque tones but with a slimmer neck and smaller body, I could see myself getting on with one of these too for the same reasons.
Sounds fantastic to me...just my sort of tone Dammit, thought i had conquered the gas thing with my current bunch...

Works fine on an iPhone though....
The SUBs use the exact same pickup and pre-amp. How can they be "close sometimes"?. My USA SUB 'IS' the Stingray sound. I much prefer it to the full fat 3-band model I had.
You have an exceptional Sub there though......it has something special going on with it. I played a couple of others before i bought that one and they didn't sound quite as good as [s]mine [/s]yours :-) The 3 band USA Rays have a built in HPF on the board i believe - thats what makes the crucial booty difference between a 2 and a 3 band. I have a full fat 2 band Ray and it sounds a bit different to the Sub - its a wee bit scoopier and maybe a touch warmer in the low end. Your Sub has more slam to it in my opinion - perhaps the lower mids are a bit more prominent with it. Vey close but quite different when you play them back to back. And the 3 band one i had was way different to either - not as warm and more brittle sounding than the Sub or 2 band. I had the luxury of using all 3 for about a year so became quite familiar with the differences. djaxups post above makes a lot of sense re the cabs you use with a Ray. I have a couple of Barefaced BB2 gen3 cabs and they can throw enough bottom end out to make you sick without breaking a sweat. Consequently the difference between all 3 was quite pronounced. If you use a less extended cab you probably wouldnt notice so much of a difference between the 3 types.
Yes promising talk for the ABM600, I shall seek one out to try. Im just not a fan of amps with "extras" such as on-board compression and octave etc. I like an amp to just be an amp. Hence why the Retroglide was so appealing.
You can switch all that stuff off - i dont ever use them either. You can even switch the eq section off if you like.....
-
i have an ABM600 EVO IV and its truly a great amp. Loud, chewy and slammy in character once you figure out the eq :-)
Why do people keep bumping random old threads at the moment? Is the forum sorting threads backwards for some people?!
Just because its old doesn't mean its irrelevant Or so i keep telling myself....

I love my old style PM4...... Sublime neck and very versatile - old school fender in passive mode and modern grunt in active

I had a Euro....the 1st fret feels significantly further out to the left than on a Fender style bass. But i only noticed it as an issue (for me) when i bought a Musicman and everything suddenly felt more compact to play - then i sold the Spector because it really began to feel awkward for me. Up till that point it had always just felt like a bit of a reach to play below the first 5 frets. It was a bass i really wanted to love but couldn't quite get there with...great build quality and looks though.

I think that limited colours cheaper run was called a MM130 series (or something like that......)

Those SR4 models are exactly the same as if you ordered a new rosewood 2 band Stingray in a solid pearl blue, candy red or gloss black colour today from a MM dealer and paid £1500. Its a complete bargain. An immaculate 2 band Stingray should sell tomorrow for +£800 so theres hardly any depreciation compared to a one you would pay £1500 for (and still flip for c.£800) The single difference is that a new one would come with a hard case rather than a gig bag and you cant get a maple board. If you need a hard case just pick up a secondhand Hiscox for £50 - they come up all the time. The SR4 was released a few years ago to hit a lower pricepoint and a few shops seem to have one or two left, mainly in pearl blue or candy red it seems. Just fyi, the 2 band eq sounds substantially different to a 3 band - i've had both at the same time. The 3 band eq has a high pass filter built in which means you dont get quite the grunt/slam that a 2 band has. It also sounds a bit thinner at the higher end. The 2 band sounds warmer and less sterile imho - you can also increase the mids if needed by backing off the bass/treble and turning the volume up (its a common misconception that the 2 band lacks mids)

Spitfire Tort - now with photos !

Excuse my ignorance but what makes them (Spitfire) so expensive compared to general ones? Does he have to catch the tortoise or something? -
Let's hear all your own Basschat Rig Rundowns.
There's some very strange opinions being aired here. I'm gigging with six different bands this year, two of them being in a dep capacity. I wouldn't have an issue with being cancelled, even at short notice. The band should retain their right to go out with their A Team so to speak. That's what I would expect as a band leader myself. If you start getting arsey as a dep, the phone will stop ringing. That's not a very professional way to tout yourself as a go to dep. A dep's life is very much rough with the smooth. The gigs you do as dep that properly bail bands out of a hole far outweigh any they might let you down on. They are the ones they remember you for. IMHO, suck it up and knock the remaining gig that you have with them out of the park. Enjoy. There will be plenty of other gigs ahead of you I'm sure.
Exactly this.....spot on From the other side, we had a guitar dep sorted for a gig next weekend (booked him months ago). I was pooching about on the gig sites a few days ago and noticed that his regular band had a gig booked on the same night. Raised the alarm with our geetard who called the dep to find out what was going on. "Ah, sorry mate I've double booked, i can't do the dep for you" Great! Panic stations for 24 hrs till we sourced another one. Its the second time he's done it and the last time......

Budget 300/400 quid? You're not far off a used mexican jazz from this site - there's usually a few kicking about. Dont buy new!!!! Get something secondhand from here and if you dont get on with it you can usually flip it without much of a loss (consider it a rental fee if you lose a bit). As you're quite new at the game you may find it takes a few attempts to get something you really settle with

My lot (Yellowhouse) have been together for about 17 years - no original members left though, longest serving member is the singer at 13 years.
Slam... that sort of describes it. Heavy Slam, it sounds a lot better than the EVO III I had, the eq seems more accurate and it's loud through a Barefaced 4x10. I have the pre shape button out, so a bass heavy scoop? Then cut the bass and boost the life out of the mids. It works great with fingers but be careful as the eq is very powerful. Oh, the treble knob doesn't do a great deal. I haven't really had chance to try the drive, not interested in the octaver thing but did use the compressor to smooth things out. I'm impressed. I need a bit more time with the eq and drive though... It's not a Trace Elliot and doesn't sound like one, it sounds like an Ashdown and that's what I need to work with. Go try one, you can than me later...
Exactly my experience........ I find that if you add a bit of valve drive in it seems to bring the treble through a bit more - around 9/10 o'clock on the dial does it for me. Thickens up a bit too but adds a bit of 'clang' too. If you want a tighter more clinical sound leave it off completely.
