New (2nd hand) Musicman Stingray bass, could of gripes...
Mudpup replied to DawnPatrol1990's topic in Repairs and Technical
Use your ears and don't rely on centre detent pots and you'll get on fine with it (they're never truly flat response in the middle anyway....) Spend some time with it before you start trying to mod it - if only because you'll ruin the resale value if you decide to move it on and its been modded (unless its something recognised like a John East preamp swap). People buy Stingrays because of their inherent sound usually. Sounds like you have an aftermarket jack socket - just get it swapped for a Switchcraft. Or you could sell it and get a 3 band version - they have centred pots - but be aware they sound quite different to a 2 band (actually more like a Sterling i think so may even suit you better) -
I've gone through the same process. And I only use a couple of pedals but it sounds so much purer and punchier without the pedals. Now I just go from a Sony wireless straight into the amp. The pedalboard consists of a DOD Milkbox compressor, Zoom MS60B multi effect and a Sansamp VT Bass DI.

About 30 odd years ago i spray can painted my 72 sunburst Fender Precision in Ford Gemini Blue and stuck a mirrored plate on it.......then sold it for £100 and bought a Westone Thunder 1A for £140 new The folly of youth - probably not my finest moment :-) But the blue looked pretty close to me :-)
-
I had a Roland bass cube - think it was a 20XL one - and that was ok. Didn't rattle, had good features and the dsp actually made a bit of difference. i just use headphones and a Zoom B1ON now though......
Ha, we did Mission Impossible into Play that funky music Another odd one was Express yourself into a bit of Chameleon into Spooky
And we have Mission Impossible (or actually a chunk of Take a Look Around by Limp Bizkit...) into Word Up as the second set opener

I had a Barefaced Big One and I think that was about 6 ohms if I recall correctly.....dunno if that helps at all (or if you could find one either now)

Theres a bunch of PDN sparkly ones here http://www.promusict.../?q=pdn+sparkle i bought my stingray from them and no probs with the transaction, they were very helpful via email and the bass was exactly as described when it turned up a few days later.... Gratuitous sparkly (non PDN) MM pic below :-)

Flamin' Slade (12stringbassist) - clip from 2007
Mudpup replied to 12stringbassist's topic in Live photos & videos
Aaahhh.....How Does it Feel. One of my absolute fave songs ever. Good job on it - I always struggle with random style bass lines and get lost. And what's with "Dave" having his tea onstage - he should have been up for the big horn section ending! -
You need to try one. I've found Ashdown have a sound of their own. I'd be interested to hear about the ABM600 and if it's an improvement over the ABM500.
Its a massive improvement/difference (delete as necessary) - i had an ABM500 evo3 and sold it after a few months as it was too "woolly" strangely enough. Couldn't get any top end sizzle or get rid of the pillowy bottom end. Tried a Rootmaster and it was ok but not just didn't have enough about it for me to spring the cash - sales guy then said i should try the ABM600 regardless of my previous experience. Bought it 20 minutes later. It just had so much more slam to it than the Rootmaster and as long as you are happy to do some extreme eq'ing (i.e don't gently tweak some eq points, turn them right up or down - which can seem a bit weird till you get your head round it) you can get some very unAshdowny sounds going on. And it will rearrange your intestines when its cranked up - thats what the Rootmaster didnt seem to have. Set without the preshape it can seem a bit dead but if you run the preshape - which sucks the mids right out and i think is unusable as it is - and cut the bass dial back to about 11o'clock then stuff loads of mids back in with the eq it comes alive. Also push the high end right back up and you can get it nice and zingy. it doesn't respond to subtle very well. I don't use the compressor or sub thing. Run the valve drive below noon to add some Ampeggy flavour or turn it off to sharpen things up a bit.

i demo'ed a Rootmaster head last year And bought an ABM600.....

Seems to be pretty well received here https://www.amazon.c...ds=caline+power and at the ebay price definitely worth a punt. The worst that can happen is you'll blow yourself up (or perhaps more importantly your pedals)......
Mudpup, how do you mount the sweeping LEDs please? Another tripod?
We picked up a couple of T bar stands like these from ebay- they came with a gantry middle bit which we never use - for £40 http://www.ebay.co.u...725.m3641.l6368 and use these clamps (expensive but worth it) to mount and angle the lights https://www.amazon.c...=chauvet+clp+10 The ADJ Sweeper quads also work pretty well in small gigs if you plonk one on the floor in front of the kick drum and point it skywards
-
We've invested in 2 types of lights and a hazer recently and found its raised everything up a level - we're getting more and better gigs because we're putting on a better show for the customers. The hazer has made a huge difference - best bit of kit imho This ADJ VBar Pak is great value - 2 x LED bar lights, DMX, auto programs, master/slave and remote control and tiny too. We use them on the floor at stage front. https://www.gak.co.u...CFVQ_Gwod3esJyA The other ones are a pair of ADJ Sweeper Beam Quads which are a chunk more expensive (although we picked them up as refurbs from Whybuynew for a great price) but are really effective. We put them at the back corners angled in a bit. They go a bit mad on sound active but left on auto are good. https://www.thomann....am_quad_led.htm The pictures below show it off quite well - just a couple of smallish pub gigs but looks much bigger

I have owned both and now have 2 Stingrays. Really wanted to love the Spector as it was a significant birthday prezzie from the missus - kept it for 3 years but never really fell for it. I couldn't quite get on with the neck feeling so way out left and it didn't quite have the sound i was looking for. I was looking for zingy meaty grunt and it was a bit too sterile for me. Bought a US MM Sub and it sold me on Stingrays.......i now have 2 and its killed my GAS

thanks dad!!!!

Finally grabbed some video with a half decent sound (if you listen on headphones). I'm pretty pleased with the bass sound. Just shot on a GoPro clamped to a pole so not great angles although the second clip has a crowd filmed section at 4.12 (ps how do i get the you tube video to show here rather than the link please?)
2nd hand zoom ms60b. Same price range as a brand new dedicated pedal... the tuning works perfect and it has the added bonus of a million other pedal combinations in a boss sized pedal. Great space saving invention of all time!
THIS :-)
I'm not entirely sure about this. Generally the air flow technology is designed to permit multiple amplifier racking without spaces between. Normally, amps draw fresh air in the front and exhaust hot air out the sides or the rear. If vented panels are fitted between the amplifiers, then pre-heated air inside the rack will re-cycle through the front. If you feel more comfortable with spaces between amps then use solid panels - not vented ones. If you are running into an overheating problem then vent the hot air OUT of the rack at the rear.
Nobody's talking about multiple amps in a bag here........just what is a decent bag to put an amp in. One amp, a rack bag, a bit of room for air to circulate by buying an extra unit one - either stick a panel in or leave it open. Job done, never had an overheating problem in 5 years. Both my amps (in separate cases) blow air out of the front - not the back :-)
-
I use the Gator bags, they're very good. Just buy one with an extra unit and stick a vented blank panel above your amp.
