Played a semi famous East London pub for the second time last night. Went down a storm first time a few weeks ago, 3 rebooks this year and every 8 weeks for 2015 confirmed by promoter. Was a bit of a worry when we saw he had the wrong band on the posters for our night and he wasnt interested in contacting the other band in case he had double booked. I had to find them on Facebook and sort everything out - turns out it was the landlords error and they werent aware of it so ended up ok. Late start and finish - 11 till 2am - and the crowd run out of money/start falling over about 1ish it seems. They stop entry at 12 so it really thins out later. Security staff did an excellent job of stopping everyone dancing for health and safety reasons (apparently requested by landlord??) Consequently, we played a 1 hr first set and 1.5 hr second set and started winding down about 1.30 as there were only about 10 people left in there. Cue landlord raging at us for not playing till closing time. He was really rude and aggressive about it too. We offered to hop back up and play the remaining 20 mins to the (now 4) remaining punters but he was not interested by now and was being a complete uncooperative arse. Seemed like he was looking to chip our fee but he payed up in the end. We've never had a reaction like this in 12 years of gigs and we pride ourselves on giving everything at every gig regardless of the venue. Really p###ed me off and spoilt what had been a good gig until that point. Spleen vented :-)
There are so many! Because I have come to this lark quite late in life, there are still so many classics I'd love to do that you guys are thoroughlly sick of...Freebird, Sweet Home, Allright Now etc. But to just keep it to one that I actually know the bass line to, and that my band would never do, it would have to be.. Enter Sandman :-)
We do Sandman - it always goes down a storm. Great to watch a 50+ year old audience headnbanging to it and then pogoing to Pretty Vacant at the end of the set! -

Have a look on YouTube for "Rio Isolated Bass" Its absolutely bonkers and you realise how much gets buried in the final mix -
Hi Thanks again for the offer, i might bear that in mind So you sometimes use the BF big one and BB2 together, i bet that is one hell of a sound. cheers thebassman
Sure do but it has to be a pretty big place to need the combination
That's interesting to know about the Gramma. We seem to use similar gear/ covers and venues......... iv'e been having a gander at your facebook page. Can you get away with using the BB2 at most of your gigs on it's own? I play a lot of pub gigs and play loud covers like Foo's, QOTSA, Green day etc, so i am ike to sit fairly high in the mix with a mid/ trebly bass tone. cheers thebassman
It'll happily do small/mid sized pubs. I thought that my Gallien amp was struggling a touch at 350 watts into 8ohms but the Shuttle has loads more headroom and the cab seems to like it better. Just had to get over my fear of walloping the volume up! Once you get past halfway, the cab comes alive - the more power you dump into it the better it seems to like it :-) If you like zingy, that mid driver thingy is luvverly too - you can turn it down to taste. For the bigger gigs, I use my Big One too. If you wanted a proper play, you can always book a local studio for an hour or so and have a real blast if you get down my way.
Thanks for the reply, and even more so for your offer to let me come down for a blast. Next time I'm down that way, i'll give you a shout. I was wondering if a gramma pad might give it a bit of height, without messing with the floor coupling too much. Cheers Thebassman
I have a Gramma pad and tbh i try not to use it if poss. It definitely takes the rumble out too much for my liking on a normal floor and i only use it in specific circumstances. And it will only raise it an inch anyway.
Hi mudpup Do you have any problems using just this one cab, as in hearing yourself ok, as it's very small? Do you ever need to put it on a stand? Maybe a stupid question, but I'm looking for a one cab solution. Cheers Thebassman
Nope not really. It'll cheerfully take the Shuttle at +50% master volume and fill a medium sized pub. I tried it at one gig sat on top of the Big One (with the Big One unplugged) to raise it up but i found it lost its oomph a bit. Floor coupling definitely works in its favour. It throws a fair bit too - you can feel the air on your flares as much as hear it close up but if you walk into the audience its definitely getting heard. I am just in the process of going thru my first attempt at editing the recording on my Zoom from Saturday nights gig and have found the mix to be really good - on the night i thought i was a bit quiet (actually its a bloody loud drummer too) but it has really come through nicely. The recorder was on a shelf at the back wall of the pub. I could hear myself ok on stage but the outfront mix says it was louder out there. Youre welcome to pop down the M11 for a blast anytime - i am near Bishops Stortford.
Horses for courses, I reckon. I tried a Shuttle 6 something, amongst others, when I was last looking at amps, and ended up buying an LH500.
Spot on I did the opposite :-) Sold an LH500 and bought a Shuttle 9.2 - suits me much better although the LH500 was still a great amp. -
Buy a Carvin BX1500 through BassDirect....and thank me later
Did you mean BassGear??
