1. Im in Staffordshire (just - I refer to Tamworth as the pimple on the backside of staffordshire anyway...) depending where I might be in
2. When you see him tell him the paramedic was a bass player - once again sorting a drummers poor rhythmn! Seriously though, my old man had a major heart attack about 10 years ago and died/ was revived in the ambulance on the way to hospital. Mortality hit home for me in my mid 20's when a friend was killed in abad car smash. I don't feel so bulletproof anymore. Hope he recovers well, and enough to get behind a kit again.
3. Bit like taking a job that involves wearing a monkey suit. Don't want to wear the suit? Don't take the gig. I suppose Technically being a cruise you are "on duty" and representing the employer at all times as you are effectively on the ship 24/7. I suppose a total alcohol ban is easier to enforce.
4.
2 pages in and no mention of JJ yet. Hmmmmm. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-55d4XkfW8w
Was thinking that myself Lozz! Not nearly enough Simonon either.
5.
Was that the case with the slab 66s?
I read an interview with Entwistle where he described his as having blue veins behind the white. Would have looked better with an Ash body (this is two piece Alder)
6. I never have the patience to do a bit and write about it. Firstly dealt the body a small coat of sanding sealer, then "Blonde" nitro with a shallow coat of gloss Picked up a maple neck from here but the heel width was far too small for the body.. pity as its a nice neck. Fitted a set of suprisingly nice sounding Pbass pickups that I had removed from a Japcrap that I parted out a while ago, and as I was on a budget a cheap wiring harness. Already had the Ashtrays floating around. Picked up a MightyMite neck from a seller I've bought from before on Ebay - he's UK based so no nasty taxes, and was kind enough to Put a 60's style logo on it for me. Added a tug bar, Tuners from the parted Japcrap and a nice threaded saddle also from the parted bass. And viola! My own tribute to the 66 Slab - Nowhere near as nice as Rick's replica - I didnt have Rick's funds saddly, but Im happy with the final result!
7. That is very tasty. And very Simonon like too.
8.
perhaps a light sanding with very fine paper 1800? just to even it up a bit then lacquer.
This. I'd definitely use a nitro lacquer, they go on thinner, dry faster.
9.
What's the year of the black one on the far left, that is absolutely stunning and similar to mine
Cover me in lemon oil an throw me to the precisions! Those are all gorgeous.
10. Stop it with the dream basses I can't afford!!! It is gorgeous as is Gary's!
11. I have one of the hand stained ash FSR precisions from last year. If you look in the precision porn section there's a close-up of the body (it's the wine red one). There is a lot of variance to the colour. It's up to you really as its your baby but I think it looks pretty nice as it stands.
12. I'd just put a thin coat of satin nitro lacquer over it. If you start staining it'll get darker
13. Barracuda by heart. Timing is a git, specially when you have two guitarists who were fantastic but just couldn't get this right so it throws you.
14. This is so tempting me to part with my 2012 FSR...
15. Just out of interest, thought it would be good to start a directory of basschat members bands so we can put a name to a bass player. I know some folks have it in their sig but would be good to have it in one list. My current is Colorado Lounge and I will hopefully be doing a punk covers nock about soon.
16. Is that a Slab Body I spy.... Mocked up with a rubbish neck that was under the stairs. Blonde methinks...
17. It has been crossing my mind recently.. GAS bubbles have been forming and I have a lot of cash tied up in it LOL That and it is so damn pretty and fairly rare I'm almost affraid to use it.
18. My current trio (with my jazz lurking behind) 1970's Maya "Electric Bass" Resprayed Heritage Cherry Red Translucent Nitro, Bridge upgraded to fender's latest twist on the BBOT, Tuners replaced as they were on the way out, electrics replaced with CTS Pots, Switchcraft Jack and Sprague Orange Drop Cap. Original Pups Self Built Amber Precision - MightyMite vintage tinted neck, Squier 2 piece body sprayed with Amber Tinted clear Nitro, Wizard Thumper Pickups, Fender Vintage High-Mass bridge as used on the recent US Standards drilled for through-body stringing, Wilkinson vintage style tuners, electrics as above (Sprague, CTS, Switchcraft) And finally my 2012 Fender US Standard Factory Special Run (only 150 worldwide) - Hand stained body, Custom Shop 60's Pickups. Bought on here from Danwebb22 in January.
19. His daddy was a bass robber, he never hurt nobody....
20. None more black! Jealous of the workshop, I end up on a black and decker workmates in the garden and pray it doesn't rain! It's odd, I have a 2012 US Factory Short Run Precision (hand stained Ash body, Custom Shop 60's pickups) and yet I prefer the Amber frankenstine I recently built (two piece squier body from the states, MightyMite licensed neck, Wizard Thumper Pups, Wilkinson tuners, Fender high mass vintage through strung bridge, sprayed by can with Amber tinted Nitro) it looks sounds and feels "right" My next one will be black on black .
21. I'm always up for a project.
22.
As an aside, Rothco + Frost do Allparts stuff cheaper than Allparts do them.
That's good to know
23.
That body looks amazing. I really like the tint you've given it. I stripped my 79 P-bass as I too noticed a lot of players from the 60s and 70s did this but left it without sealer. I like the Wizard pickups too and even position my thumb rest in the same way. All well up my street
There's a company sells on eBay called Rothcoe & Frost. They do a lot of Nitro lacquers both in cans and for spray guns. They do a lighter and a darker colour as well as finnishing products and guitar bits. My Vintage High Mass bridge arrived late yesterday and I re established the fact that I can't drill straight to save my life... But its now done for through body stringing even if the ferrules are all over the place at the back!!!! Next project I think I will stick to a nice easy badass!
24. The neck is great - feels slightly shallower than the one on my US standard. It's been very stable and has hoped on and off a couple of projects. Got it from a seller in the Uk via eBay
