When I started playing, there were no "bass" tutors around. Everyone wanted to be a six-string god. Had about 3 lessons from a guy who taught my kid brother guitar. He was a propper "LA Sleaze wannabe" and in the end I gave up as he really wasnt much help - he actually admitted this, which was honest of him. I ended up teaching myself, a combination of ear and occasionaly Tab (No youtube in my day, or Tab websites. Had to buy a Tab Book for £7 to get ONE song that you actually needed to play!). I guess I do have "flaws" in my technique in fact I'm sure of it - but I play how I play. Can't sight read, cant slap, just starting to re-learn plectrum usage after 20 years of fingerstyle because I fancy it. Slap just leaves me cold - I can appreciate the skill it takes to do it effectively, but the only uses I've seen for it is to either be a member of RHCP, show off in a music shop, or demo a bass on youtube (because we all care what it sounds like slapped...)

I've been umming and Ahing about this for a while, but as the wife pointed out the bass collection in the living room has grown exponentialy since I started playing again. I've decided I MAY part company with my Thunderbird The Tbird was bought as new for me by my wife, after following a redundancy I sold 99% of my gear including my beloved 1976 Precision. I do like her, I just have a lot of basses now (Mostly P's and a J) so to make space something has to go and I play this the least. Info based on the serial says it was built in July 2003 and was no. 182 to run off the production line at the Un Sung plant in Inchon, Korea. Bad points first. There is a small scratch on the back, and a couple of small ones next tothe jack socket. There is a ding in the underside of the lower horn that has broken through the finnish on the underside of the lower horn (this was caused when after having decided to take it to a practice, having swapped out the straplocks, it parted company with the strap on a concrete floor (See pic below). There is also a small scuff at the end of the headstock. (there were some other marks, but I found these were paint transfer from leaning it against the wall/door, and these have cleaned off!) The good points are it has hardly been used in the last 9 years or so. Frets and neck are fine, no wear to the neck, and it is still wearing the strings it left the factory with! Due to the dink and the scuff (though both are not visible when playing it) I'm looking for £100 ono. Prefer collection from Tamworth, Staffs.

2 very nice sets of slightly used strings, free of charge - not even postage. Cheers mate, they will be gracing my two projects when my neck and replacement nut turn up. Small donation bunged in the BC kitty.

If I ever DO go down the luthier build route, I'll use my guitarists cousin Wez Venables.. as the guitarist assists him with the finishing its not to far to go to break some kneecaps!! He has the first bass wez knocked out as a prototype, and he wont part with it though he lets me have a bash on it now and then. Headstock is a bit naff and it has "generic" hardware but the neck and body are gorgeous

Now that makes me moist!
Oh you know Gaz? I've had quite a few bits off him including a couple of necks which were nice - trad chunky p necks, not a bad finish. Will be ordering another neck from him shortly. The Necks on my two "Feckers" are from Gaz.
IN FACT.. thats my post on his facebook!!!
Hi again Gaz from Seco got back to me a week or so ago, and I forgot to post it. Sorry! I've had a look and there's a photo on there of a couple of P's on there with this comment: Again, just passing this on because I know the lad and I can vouch for him - I have no vested interest in it.
This guy not only manufactures guitar paint, but he has some really great blogs, pictures and videos that show you how to do various different paintjobs (including doing sunbursts) on his site. Really nice chap too if you email him. http://www.manchesterguitartech.co.uk/ http://www.manchesterguitartech.co.uk/2011/04/11/creating-a-sunburst-finish-with-aerosols/
Thanks for the info.. theres some good stuff on there - wish I'd have read it before getting stuck in . Will save it for the next project

I'll take a couple of sets of the used Fender NPS's please mate if theres any left. A 40(or 45)-100 and a 45-105 would be great - have a couple of cheapo projects on the go.

I've played with a drummer on and off for 20 years. He knows what ~I'm thinking, we have known each other for so long as mates and band mates that put us together and it just works. He plays off me. As with the OP he is a "good" drummer (very kieth moonish, eclectic yet controled) but he used to speed up if he gets "excited". In my case, because I am his "metronome" it gives him the freedom to throw in those moonesque fills whilst relying on me to hold him back. Thats my job, I'm the bass player, I'm part of the Rhythm section so I am performing a Parallel functon to the drummer whilst adding to the sonic texture. I think in these situations you have to excercise a bit of discresion in how you handle things. If you go at it like a bull at a gate like some here have suggested, you are going to loose a drummer and a friend at the same time. Nobody wants to be told they are sh*t.
I would go for the Music Man SUB! I would never buy a Squier:

what you see as price is what you get
build in china
the net is full of Squier for sale, so forget it to resell afterwards, huge price competition
lousy electronics
The problem as being a beginner is that your technique will be bad... So if you combine your technique with a cheap/bad instrument from starters, it will obviously sound bad Not very motivating... I also started with cheap basses build in china... not worth it... Go for basses build in the USA, UK, HOLLAND Hope this helps...

Sorry, but I disagree! Most of us would agree that Squiers are variable in quality but if you get a good one they can be very good. I've been playing for thirty years and have had a few good basses. My current favourite to play is a Squier Affinity P bass - which also happens to be the cheapest bass I have ever bought!! Shop around and try individual basses out is the only way to guarantee that you get a decent instrument. I do agree though that it is much harded learning on a poor quality bass - especially if the neck is poor. That said, I think that the general quality of cheap basses now is far better than it was when I started playing.
+1 to the reply. I have a VM Squier Jazz, its a rather good bass.
-
Alternative to the squires is the Westfield P bass copies. You can pick them up for peanuts - about £100 new. I just got one from Crackconverters 2nd hand for £40!! They are good basses, Precision shaped and sounding (Monsieur Burnell used Precisions) and would leave you more of a budget for an amp. A cruddy amp can make a decent bass sound pants.

How much more black could it be? The answer is None More. None More black. Like everything about it apart from the Tele-style neck - really dont like them but thats personal preference. Still a nice looking P though.

The act of creation - using no more than fingers, ears and a portion of the brain coupled with a bit of wood and metal creating something that pleases my ears. And the ability to convey an emotion in a literal sense to another human being using a universal language. If you listen to Tracks of My Tears or Dock of the Bay, Comfortably Numb.. they all convey an emotion - a moment in time, be it an actual experience or somebody placing themselves in that position mentally. I've always believed that the best songs are those that convey the emotion that inspired the writer to create it - like a picture for the ears. I'll sit down now and take my tablet...
