Amazing story! Tell us more about JK's house and studio!
Ah, I didn't actually get to go inside unfortunately. He set up the amp in the porch leading to the studio. There were a few nice cars laying about though.
You're right, I hear quite a few examples of 'cool, impressive' bass playing (usually on YouTube) that's totally groove free... Slapping, tapping, really fast playing etc. etc. don't necessarily equate to groove...
Yea, it's not even that he doesn't have any groove, he's playing well out of time half the time.
I thought it was someone from He Man. Cool story, and you're right ... I'm no Jamiroquai fan but THAT is the bass playing that made me want to pick up a four- or five-string and get some groove running. Did he play for you at all? Would've been awesome to get a quick masterclass!!
Hehe, nah, got to play his old Stingray though which was lush.
I'm guessing if you met William Murderface - different story
Hehe, yup. Glad someone on here knows who my avatar is of.

So, I went with my drummer mate James to pick up a cab today (my second Aguilar GS412). I'd seen the listing come up on Ebay last week and within 10 mins of it being listed I'd cheekily arranged a sale with the seller. After the exchange of emails I knew the his name was vaguely familiar but wasn;t really sure so thought nothing of it. So, as we were getting near his area today we noticed how posh it was and began to joke about what sort of massive band he must play with but had no realy idea. When we arrived he was very freindly and showed us the cab. I'd arranged beforehand that I'd borrow a bass and amp to test the cab with, he had a DB750 but unfortunately couldn't find a speaker lead anywhere. He apologised and said we'd have to go 20 mins up the road to his bands practice space to try it out. We loaded the cab into my mates car, I traveled with the seller and James followed behind. On the way I asked what sort of stuff he played. He said he played a bit of everything, Funk, R&B, Soul, Rock, Jazz etc. I asked who he played with and he paused slightly and quietly said "Jamiroquai". There was a moment of silence and I said, "Wow, as far as bass gigs go, thats about the best one in the country." He laughed and said we were actually on the way to JK's house and studio now. Another silence fell. I suddenly felt like a complete idiot for not recognising the name Paul Turner in the emails. Anyway, we had a good chat about gear and Aguilar in particular and I bought the cab for a bargain price. He said he didn't really need it as he had lots of other Aggie gear and JK liked a very very quiet stage sound. Still grinning now though. I'm probably one of the most undeserving guys on here to meet him as I am in to such different music and wouldn't really describe myself as a fan as some of you likely are. Weird day.

Think Rich has some of the Nemesis cabs. Sounded lush with his Shuker and Hartke amp the other week.

Mines been sweet the whole time I've had it. Never had any problems at all. Any good amp tech (maybe not the guy you took it to before ) should be able to fix it I'd have thought, it's not a particularly unusual amp inside I don't think.
Yeah I heard a band earlier this year using a Mesa boogie 400+. Sounded nice. As for matamp they only make guitar heads right now. Joe, my Sunn is currently knackered. Again. There's some god awful hum present. sent it to a tech who said he'd fixed it, but clearly he hasnt. Toasted, yes they are awsome bands. check out mine H E R E . You may or may not like it. Anyone got any ideas
What a ballache. Well, let me know if you decide to flog it, working or not.

Gear recommendations for monitors/amp/mixer.
joegarcia replied to David Nimrod's topic in Accessories and Misc
Mackie SRM450. Avoid Behringer IMO. Tapco make decent mixers for the same kind of money. Or one of the Soundcraft M or EPM series if your budget will stretch to it. -
Right oh, Im thinking of looking at an all tube head. It needs to be warm and LOUD. I play in a loud heavy band, think boris, Unsane, Old man gloom blah blah, I currently use a Sunn 1200s mid nineties hybrid amp with a pair of matamp 4x10's. Of course I'd love a Sunn 300T/fender bassman pro 300 or an SVT II but they are mucho bucks. Anyone got any other suggestions and what price I'd be looking at? And where I can find them second hand other than Ebay? ta. Alex.
Hey if you wanna sell your Sunn give me a shout, can't afford it right now though. Buying a second GS412 so wouldn't mind a second 1200s to go with it.
I bet one of my Acmes (rated at a mere 350W) could easily handle all the power from your Sunn. Cab power handling ratings are all but useless and certainly one of the least important specs for a bass cab. The power handling of an 8x10" is particularly irrelevant as the sensitivity of so many speakers in unison means you need very little power to go loud. Spread that power across eight voice coils and each speaker has a very easy time, whether the cab is rated at 400W or 2000W. Alex
I don't mean to sound arrogant but I'm willing to bet I could blow both speakers in five minutes. I use a lot of nasty fx with lots of extreme volume spikes.
If it has black speakers it sounds like quite an early Ashdown, or the Blueline ones have been replaced...? That may explain the 8ohms thing too!
Yea, think it may well be an older one. Anyone know how the older ones compare to the newer ones? Shame I can't re-wire it. Might still be ok though, my amp can handle 2.67 ohms and I wouldn't really mind it getting less power than the other cab although it's not ideal.

I've been told that the JCM800's are very sought after and quite expensive now. Although I was told that about the guitar version. I had one once, nice amp, think I sold it for around £300 about 4 years ago.
Now you say that - I've sat down with a piece of paper and I think you're right. However - if you have a stereo amp that goes down to 2 ohms AND the speakers are all 8ohm then you might be in business. Parallel wire the 8ohm speakers into 2 stacks of 4 and that will give you 2ohms on each stack. Hamster
Thanks but is it possible for the speakers to be 8ohm if they're wired up presently for 8ohms total? Also, my amp does do 2ohms but I wanted to be able to use it with another 4ohm cab.
-
I feared this may be the case. I don't know what individual impedance the speakers are yet as I haven't bought it as yet and the current owner doesn't know either. Probably won't if he's sure it's 8 ohms. It's a 'touring' Ashdown ABM810. It looks like a normal 810 but has normal black drivers of some sort as opposed to the normal Blueline ones. 1200w as the standard ABM810s.

Hi, Is it possilble to re-wire an 8ohm 8x10 cabinet to 4ohms by using series/parallel wiring? I don't know what the individual speakers are yet but does this sound plausible? Ta's
How about another totally colossal pedal board Joe? I reckon you could do with some more FX
Hehe, yea, though of doing that when I started splitting my chain in to two fx paths for two amps but managed to keep it on the same board. Would have required some serious tap dancing too. -
Get this Joe, and you're one up on me! Nearly bought a Shaftesbury Ric-a-like ages ago and wish I had. This one's very Lemmy, I like it
Hehe, not sure if it would quite match your RD. So wish I could afford this, would stick a black scratchplate and truss rod cover on and be very happy indeed.
Joe, don't worry - you'll struggle to stress it out, I used to have the 412 and it'd handle pretty much anything thrown at it.
Cool. Looks like I've found another Aguilar GS412 now anyway. Sounds amazing with the V4 by the way, exactly how I'd hoped. Looking forward to a proper practice with it tomorrow, last one before studio time. The VBC810 was at Fairdeal Music: http://www.fairdealmusic.com/marshall/7042...10-bass-cabinet

Could be closer than you think!
Ah yea. Need something before April too and besides, looks like I've got mysefl another Aggie GS412 for £450.
