Which companies are dead to you?
MichaelDean replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in General Discussion
UK sellers are taking pre-orders for Mesa Boogie stuff now. https://www.andertons.co.uk/bass-dept/bass-amps/bass-amp-heads?facet=ads_f11006_ntk_cs%3A"Mesa+Boogie" Due supply chain issues over the last few years they've not been able to make enough to export, or something like that. See the thread here with the amp designer chiming in: Peavey now own Trace Elliot, have done since 2005. They've had the Elf out for 5-ish years. The TE-1200 isn't cheap, and is currently on back order. https://www.gak.co.uk/en/trace-elliot-te-1200-bass-amplifier-head/959229 -
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/226021739346 Does seem odd that a 2 band Stingray has 4 knobs. But, 5 minutes of internet sleuthing shows that it has a 2 band active EQ and a passive tone control. I can understand the confusion, it isn't a common setup.

It's already in the calendar! Happy to pay in advance again! 🙂

"New" Epiphone Thunderbirds - Thunderbird '64
MichaelDean replied to neepheid's topic in Bass Guitars
I'm still a bit sad that they discontinued the white version. That was the coolest (other opinions are available). I guess the Silver Mist is nice though. -
First gig with the band this evening. Played the first heat of the Bristol Metal 2 the Masses competition, where we had a chance to play at Bloodstock. The last gig I played was probably 2019 and was with a function band, so a very different thing tonight. Didn't get through, which has bummed me out a bit. A thrash band and the first one with the bunch of early 20s went through. I think maybe doom is a bit of a harder sell. I also had a couple of clangers too, so that might have had something to do with it. I need to practice with my multi fx. I can play the songs, but I don't use it at home. It'd help iron out a few things. Good fun though being back on stage mind you. We decided that the singer shouldn't be in the middle, so we flanked me with the guitarists and I got to throw lots of shapes.

I had an Hohner Arbor series P bass, that I bought mainly because it looked cool in white/white/maple, and was sold to me as an '87, which makes it a birth year bass for me. The nut width was too much for a 4 string for my taste (44mm I reckon) and I don't think the pickup/wiring was great, plus it was weighty. AND the A string rattled, but due to the way the machine heads tapered, you couldn't get the windings lower without a lot of wraps. The Revelation PJ I have now sounds loads better and is more resonant. Held onto that Hohner for a lot longer than I should have, but at least I didn't lose money on it.

@Newfoundfreedom, yes, I understand that the green is period correct on a reissue Les Paul. But when you're already not making a period correct guitar, with a different body shape, and you've got the green tuners, white nut and cream binding, I don't really think it makes a lot of sense. I know you're not arguing their point, but clearly Harley Benton disagree with me! 😂 It still feels like a lot of guitar for the money, and I kinda like doing mods 😅 Makes it feel a bit more mine. Plus, from a function point of view, these tuners are SO much better. I can play for 5 minutes and it isn't out of tune, and they do feel good quality.

New tuners fitted. I got some fake Hipshot style locking tuners from Aliexpress. They're great. I had to enlarge the holes to 10mm, which was easy enough. One of the old screw holes then lined up with the old tuners too. They'll be super convenient when I get some new strings to put on it. It was quite a stabby faff fitting the old, curled, strings on again. Might want to fill and re-drill for one of the holes as the tuner is slightly off centre. I'll see how much it bothers me!

How was Your rehearsal last morning or night ?
MichaelDean replied to nilorius's topic in General Discussion
Really good rehearsal tonight. We've got our first gig on Wednesday, so we just kept it short and sweet. Played our 25 minute set 3 times to make sure we're all happy, and then called it a night. Don't want to overdo it. Also had a photoshoot beforehand over in Chew Magna. We wanted to take some photos in a forest, but it was a bit damp for that. Not sure how metal it is to be photo'd in my wellies either, so we went with a local church, got kicked out after a bit. The weather got a bit better, so we hung out in the graveyard 😅 We'll need to wait and see what the finished pics come out like -

Yep, 13th of October. Get it in your diary now! -
Similarly, the guitarist in my band has Gibson SGs, a Les Paul, a Heritage and a Dunable. All very nice instruments. The other day he bought an Epiphone Les Paul Modern on a whim. The ones with the chambering and sculpted heels. It sounds better than the others in the context of our band and plays as good as the USA counterpart - better if you consider the heel joint. Plus, he doesn't have to worry about taking an expensive instrument with a stupid neck design to gigs.

That part of the scam is designed to weed out the more switched on sellers. Only the naive/inexperienced/dumb sellers get stung with these scams. They send the message to everyone and maybe get a hit. It's a volume game. Same with the whole Nigerian Prince nonsense. You just need one or two people to bite to make it worthwhile.

I'm assuming it's all in hand, but there is a Pension Ombudsman. Might be worth contacting them in case you haven't already. https://www.pensions-ombudsman.org.uk/making-complaint -
The IEM (in ear monitors) Bible thread
MichaelDean replied to EBS_freak's topic in Accessories and Misc
Looks like no. A quick Google suggests that "Ultranet" is a Behringer proprietary system. -
I don't have any experience with the basses unfortunately. The guitarist in my band has a Jet strat that he loves. He doesn't use in our band, because it isn't very metal so I haven't seen it, but there does seem to be a universal love for them. If they put the same attention into their basses as their guitars, they should be decent. I also saw this review a while ago, seem to remember he was a big fan.

I dont know, I think that could work...

I'd be contacting Newtone. They'll make one at the right length for you.

I think a lot of it is just how regularly you use those instruments and how much time you've dedicated to them. After starting at 34", I played my Mustang exclusively for years. I got to the point where I didn't think that I'd be able to manage a 34" scale bass again and convinced myself I had small hands (which I later realised is a lie as I take an L in gloves!). Now I'm using a 34"-37" Dingwall most often after an intermediate step of a 34" SBMM Sub Ray 5. I've also started playing 25.5" and 24.75" scale electric guitars more as a writing tool. If you keep them in rotation, it's all fine.

The IEM (in ear monitors) Bible thread
MichaelDean replied to EBS_freak's topic in Accessories and Misc
Yep! Mouth closed. The guy also said my ears were a bit waxy, but went ahead anyway 🙄 I did actually manage to make some custom sleeves of my own with two part silicone. Mix it up, bite down on something, get it into my ear, push the standard fit IEM in and let it set. Then, when dry enough, take it out and let it fully cure. After that, I got a drill bit and gently used that to make a hole connecting the IEM and where it should exit. They don't last very long (I think I generally got 4/6 months from a set) like that as the hole makes them fairly weak and they get a bit gross as it isn't smooth, but I know how good a custom fit can be! The second bend in my left ear is quite severe as well, judging by the mould. I stopped a few years ago. The band folded and it seemed like too much faff, even if it elevated the performance of the IEMs. Plus the foam tips were 90% of the way there. And now my phone doesn't have a headphone jack and I wouldn't be able to get the moulds in a rechargeable Bluetooth earphone case. Probably also a bit risky just pushing silicone into your ear too... I didn't mind the sensation though 😅 -

I had it backwards - I had a set of ACS earplugs made while I was at uni and had the same thing with those. Couldn't stand using them because as soon as I opened my mouth, the seal broke. Comply tips are fine for me though! It's so strange how something can be so different between people! -
I don't think I've ever pulled a bass out of any gigbag in a non standing position... Just never occurred to me that I should lie it down to get it out. The zip toggle is already out of the way and the zip itself is plastic/nylon and probably less hard than a poly finish.
