1.
Krysh's post above matey?
Ah! Overlooked that one. Thanks for the heads up and for teaching me a new word or two.
2. Don't know if it's a good idea, but I was thinking of a thingie that exists both as a serious tool and as a toy: A whole bunch of needles rest tightly against each other in a frame that they stick out from. These things can be placed on objects, and they'll then copy its profile, after which a picture of the needles taken from the side will show the profile in all its glory (in this case).
3. "Elephant Talk" with a sax... Yup! Tractor Seal of Approval. Saw them in 2002 or thereabouts, not expecting much in terms of shared music experience between audience and band, but they blew me away (or belewed me away - he was very charming too), and Fripp both smiled - no less - and applauded the audience. Much to my surprise: a shockingly great musical experience. (Normal Fripperantics wouldn't have been appreciated by me.)
4. Laughable thread! ANYbody can find a rig for less than 200k quid! Oh! Seriously though, I've had and still have some cheap used stuff, but never a complete rig for less than 200. Impressive and, first and foremost, very, very cool. .
5. Mark, I'm sure we all appreciate your sharing your knowledge (I certainly do), but I have to tell ya, mate: don't forget about style! As it is, you almost sound like a dictionary. Style, man. Style! Sorry to be harsh about it, but someone had to tell you.
6. Thanks for the heads up! I'll be following this with interest
7.
Is it really low powered and very heavy then?
You silly git! You don't seem to understand anything! No it's just quite average, and no other combo has exactly that quite average ratio. Comprendo? Glad to be of help!
8. Bah! I could've done this soooo much better if I could've done it at all. Stunning indeed.
9.
a small fragment of beer can is acting as a shim for the time being
That is the way to do it. At least if you're one of those classic, autarkic types. (read "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Robert Pirsig for the ref.) Then: what Leen says. Not everyone reads here, but in the Amps & Cabs forum your readers will be interested in amps. Here, Leen and I are just interested in saying "hi". We're simple people: basses and amps go above our heads. Welcome to BC! Enjoy the banter. best, bert
10.
routinely pay £thousands for instruments and wouldn't dream of performing in public with some few-hundred-quid-piece-of-junk that people who play "pop" instruments think is the norm.
That is such a good way of looking at it! So reasonable and realistic! Keep them basses coming! Seriously though, it is a good way of looking at it. Basses are soooo cheap. In fact their pricing is one of the reasons I finally gave up on keyboards, and started with the bass instead. Bliss!
11. Hey Paul, Welcome! Yup. You came to the right place alright. Now head over to the spiritism thread where you'll learn that rainbows are not real. It's all superstition! Enjoy the forum! best, bert
12. You're all just weak persons with no traces of character strength whatsoever. Me OTOH, before, I wanted a Precision, Jazz, Streamer, Thumb, Dano, Alembic, Wal, Steinberger, Status, StingRay, Bongo and Rick.* Since, however, I just want a Precision, Jazz, Streamer, Thumb, Dano, Alembic, Wal, Steinberger, Status, StingRay, Bongo and Daisy Rock.* So it's just reasonable to say I went the opposite way. Now, amps on the other hand ... I'd just envisaged I'd own a practice combo and eventually just maybe a gig combo. Cue two years, and I'm listening to and comparing 6 heads, 5 different cabs and three combos. And it's all your fault! *) Lot longer list of basses held back from view for reasons of webforumpostcompactness. ... and prying eyes...
13. Did I already tell about the bloke who'd hid roughly 6,000 quid in the basement, and when his wife found out, she immediately ordered a kitchen? Seems to follow a pattern indeed.
14. Missing bar? Missing bar? What you on about, girl? I'm just great at the 1 bar blues, the 2 bar blues, the 3 bar blues. etc. .... upto and including the 11 bar blues, but have yet to nail this elusive 12 bar one. Maybe a bit above my head and slightly beyond the quantity of my fingers... Sax: nope. I just borrowed one for a few months, as I played the flute back then. But I'm really a keyboardist. My personal take on cool: Really cool instruments: bass, drums, sax. Slightly less so: guitar, pipe organ and modular synths with loads of knobs and jacks Nothing for a while . . . . . Piano.
15. Cool stuff! Thanks! Oh and congrats on an easy repair. So, preventing it from wandering, eh? Hm. I think I'll write a note.
16. Just a noob idea, but: headstock angle and how the string rests in the nut? Not meaning any disrespect, but have you looked at the nut from the side? With a low compliance string like this one, I imagine there may be something wrong that I've seen a few times: the string making an ugly bend over the nut - seriously hindering free vibration. Some changes there, and it worked again.
17. Hey SB, Welcome! Yup, you're not alone. I tried the saxophone once, and could improvise a sax solo well enough, but only in 1 to 11 bar blues. Never ever reached your 12 bar level. So relax and rejoice! You're OK. That and you chose some cool instruments. Enjoy the site! best, bert
18. When such happens, I just stick on extra wide self-stick rubber feet, after having equipped the surface of the cab with neoprene glue and having let that glue dry. It reduces the height/width ratio drastically, which is good, and also removes the need to penetrate the case material.
19.
Ordered it from Amazon.
...where it's only £4.49!!! Ordered it immediately. Thanks for the heads up, guys!
20. Shuttles have switched-mode power supplies. Just a few days ago, another thread on here indicated that these are dependent on the correct voltage. Maybe your answer lies there, Idunno.
21.
Can you explain how a resistor could vary with frequency, unless it was also behaving as an inductor?
Not me personally, no. I just got convinced by an article I read about it. YMMV.
22. Hahahaha! That brings it to a whole new level. I'll make a site. Send me two quid, the specifics of the bass, and your name, eg. "Steve from Exeter". Hm. Make that three quid.
23. "Hon! I managed to sell your mink! Fantastic, eh? No more guilt! And the new bass is totally environment-friendly! British too! Warwick! Yeah, Bass Direct."
24. Oh yes! Miniature pipe organ made out of matches and matchboxes, with miniature notes of an existing organ piece. Me sis made it for me almost four decades ago. Twill never leave me. Best birthday present I ever got. An bottle of a French wine called "Le petit Bert". It's just gotta be lousy wine, but I ain't throwing that bottle. And this is only some of the music related stuff... Bonjour, Le grand Bert
