1. Can't remember any of them without a net search, but new amps of this type are very rare these days. Though I seem to remember that some Hi-Fi freaks swear by some of them. I'd guesssuppose they say the distortion introduced by yet another stage is more musical than the distortion found in many or strong transistors, Idunno. What I really was thinking of though was 60s amps (some 50s too maybe?) that are still in use, as there seems to be some degree of revival of using them old ones. The Dutch bass forum has had some exchange about old solid state amps, IMS. Also here in Norway there is some "milieu" for this. I own an old solid state - probably with output transformer - that a guitarist I know swore by, until he moved out of the country and left it with me. Have never used it, but feel I must try it now. BTW, by what I wrote I was not stating that valves have nothing to do with it. I'm still no expert, and have no idea about how valves would respond. Gut feeling says they're vulnerable, but mind seems to say they essentially work like transistors. Anyway, the MAG heads are safe, and that's the core here. I was just afraid of an untruth spreading.
2.
I am a good hearted person, and will let things go a bit cheaper to help others, but I will always check posting history now, and if I think it's just some one buying and selling they can look elsewhere for a bargain. They are doing nothing wrong of course, I just won't sell to some one I feel is just in it for the money.
So very much this. There is a fine or broad line or area (dunno really) between formal demands to behaviour and that which we feel or sense, and both of the latter are just as important as the former.
3. You'll never learn to play the bass, Ray!
4. One aspect of the popularity of metal is that it tends to attract people who are generally more interested in music and who'll use more of their disposable income on music than the likes of Brittney Spears fans. In my time of running a CD-shop, I had to note with sadness that these "fanatic" customers were so few that they could not keep the shop alive. The people that kept the shop alive were those very many that bought very few CDs every year, and they all bought the same. Based on that lack-of-science, my guess would be that these band-members-to-be could belong to a similar group of more-than-averagely-interested-in-music people. Demm! Ran out of hyphens! Will be back after restarting my pc.
5.
Someone take his looper away.
Here's where I think an alternative comes in: not using a looper connected to a bass, but building a loop without bass parts on a Kaossilator or similar, and then playing bass to it. It's like a band who never get tired of letting you practise and/or develop ideas. Me, I love it. I just make something impromptu on a Kaossilator, and then must find something to do on the bass to go with it. I find that challenging and fun. This may not teach me to play bass, but at least I'm having fun whilst not learning to play the bass.
6.
so I thought I would gently tint it then I thought why gently tint it when I can go the whole hog
Ain't that the truth. MDP to the rescue! Great thread idea. Sorry for not having anything to bute contri.
7.
That's true; LiverpudlianSteves as well
Close enough, innit? I thought it was. Just take the A41/A550 and you're in Queensferry before even finishing a song of sorts.
8.
Him asking me for £500 does not make him an arsehole. ME asking him to do me a cheap deal makes me the arsehole.
Very good point, imho, and one I can't recollect having seen here in these discussions. If I was merely lucky and scored it for just 30 quid, and then found my mate needed one like that, I'd probably let him have it for 30 quid. The moment however that he demands that I hand it over for 30 quid is the moment he damages our friendship considerably. Here on BC we're all allowed to have our own (=different) community sensitivities or lack thereof, but one's own community sensitivities do not come with the right to demand that others too follow them. I think that this at least is a clear cut line. Simplified, "be kind" or "make money", but don't call others "stupid" or "arsehole" because they have a different stance. That said, some people are arseholes, and some are stupid of course.
9. I concur with Steve, Richsteve and Lensteve. Enjoy the site! Oh, and you'll find BC filled to the rim with Welshies and ambassadors living there. You'll not walk alone. best, bertsteve
10. Just be aware that while the answers are OK for the MAG 300, they're not OK for some solid state amps that (still) have output transformers. Output transformers do require a load.
11. Hey MFD, Welcome! Yup, you came to the right spot. Lots of info here. Enjoy! best, bert
12.
That's basically arsehole tax.
Genius!
13. I wonder what the question would have been if we'd played a tenor or a soprano.

Hi

Hey Tamaru, Welcome! You and I already have something in common! I'm a seasoned bass player too! (Seven seasons, in my case.) Enjoy the forum! best, bert
15. Yeah, but who in his right mind would dare mod such a work of art?
16. Thanks, Skej. So would it be safe to say this is the style sweeper: and this is the newer one: Edit: answered by Marvin! Thanks, guys!
17.
Not a pro, but I do understand that the impedance is a nominal figure which changes with frequency. Lower frequencies result in lower impedances, the 4Ohms is a nominal average. You may never be operating at 2.67Ohms.
Yup. It differs by frequency, and is represented by a curve, and that curve has relative changes with excursion. One can never talk about one impedance curve. It's a set of curves. So yes indeed, it's a very nominal figure. Still one that I wouldn't dare taking lightly, but I'm no pro either.
18. Must Resist Urge ... Thanks for the heads up, and please keep us updated. At this price point, I'm sure a lot of people would like to try a sevener. I know I would.
19. Thanks, guys. Marvin, does yours have a set of stacked knobs? I'd guess maybe the 3EQ could be recognised by its lacking that, but I don't know or remember anything about it. btw, what's with the filthy avatar? You should be ashamed of yourself, you male shauvinist pig, ruining a perfect ass like that with an apple!! And have you seen the labia on that thing?
20. Phew! Thanks to this thread I have now deleted my order for two BF cabs. I feel soo relieved, and am very happy Alex was willing to delete that particular order, and send me two BF strippers instead. Thanks, guys! Wait!
21. What Wayne says. If you still are going to mismatch actual impedance (2.67 Ohm in this case) with output transformer impedance, then it is normally a better idea to have the cab have less impedance - not more as one would expect due to experience with solid state power stages. That would mean connecting it to the 4 Ohm output. However, I have no idea how flexible the SVT is, and in this case choosing the 2 Ohm output might be better. I know this is of little help, but I thought mentioning the general idea was better than not mentioning it. Maybe a pro chimes in.
22. Hello Santi, Welcome! Yup, it's nice here. Not as nice as Barcelona, but you may survive anyway. There's a lot to learn here, at any rate. Enjoy! best, bert
23. Hey Jim, From behind the parapet: Welcome! Low enough? Yup, do share some wisdom, and enjoy the site! best, bert
24. The whole point of them is that they are to faithfully reproduce what you put into them, especially the EXT, with wide enough frequency range and quick enough cones etc. , and as a result they will do any style, and you decide sound with bass, effects and head, not with the cabs. Remember that if this type of sound quality is all that you're after, the EXT will give that. The NMT is higher rated, at the cost of some detail. Still awesome of course, but still.
25. Reading about SR300, I saw Ibanez replaced the style sweeper model with a new model last year or so, that had a different 3EQ and new pups (Cap EXF N2 instead of EXF 4F and EXF 4R). Then I read of another possible change recently, but can't find it anymore. So, did they recently change them again? And in any case, me liking the style sweeper a lot when I tried it between 1.5 and 2 years ago, it becoming my main reason for my SR GAS, I'd order a style sweeper model unseen, but would be wary of getting the newer model (though possibly without good reason). Can one visually discern them from each other? Does anyone know what it would say on the box? I'm thinking that shops' limited knowledge, and their webshops' limited updatedness could mean I order a style sweeper model from the description, only to receive a newer 3EQ.
