This is my dorkiest one, and surely one of the dorkiest basses on the planet under the assumption that a grown up uses it. I think it makes me adorkable. Yup, it does! I'm adorkable. Well, his eBay feedback is from people who posted relatively soon after they received the bass. Later, when they learn more, and understand what they've really bought, some may get veritably annoyed. Some might even feel conned.

Great bass lines hide in the most unusual places!
BassTractor replied to Damonjames's topic in General Discussion
It's of course old by now, but exactly 30 years ago, I was taken aback by some christian faith music that some girl in love with Jesus was eager to present to me. Didn't want to hear it of course, knowing full well what I would get to hear (or so I thought), but there was no chance of escaping, so I did listen to this stuff with half an ear ... Oh, and they called themselves Koinonia ... -
Me too I've trouble blowing my drum(??!), as the recognition I normally get is sooo wonderful and bloody out there ... ... like for example this time Bill Bruford after a concert, where I'd depped on piano in a drums&piano piece, gave me the appreciation and recognition I feel I deserved for my suitcase - one that would take A3 sheets with ease and space to spare, and thus lots of notebooks and scores. Bloody awesome suitcase that was...

Just in case somebody might be interested, I've retracted an earlier post in response to Bilbo's claim. Originally I'd reacted against some assumed underlying tendencies that may not have been present, and Bilbo did have a point about some formal capacities of music not having style boundaries. That was an important and very good point. I apologise for having drawn conclusions based on assumptions.

Just in case anyone's interested in this one, and FWiW, IME Billsmusic is a great, great eBay seller that I heartily recommend.

Hey Marc, Welcome! You'll be happy to know that you're BC South Wales member #102,151. Howzat for coincidence? Anyway, partake and none of that being a stranger, eh? best, bert

Hey Mike (if I don't presume too much there), Welcome! You're not alone. Quite many here need to learn something ( ), and quite many "always" wanted to play bass. I'm like that myself as well, and old to boot. What do I say? I'm too old to boot even. Anyway, read the fora (there's a lot of stuff on here) and ask away! Answers will flow in your general direction. Enjoy! best, bert

This may not be a site issue, what do I know, but: Today, the Notifications icon said I had a Comment. Never seen such a thing before. Now, I could read it, and could comment it, but have no idea what this is about. It seems to be the same as a Profile Comment. Where does one comment? Have not seen any link on any profile. How can one comment? What are comments for? Who can see them? Thanks, Bert

Occasional lurker, first time poster
BassTractor replied to alittlebitrobot's topic in Introductions
With some aid from Discreet, you just built one stellar intro thread, albr! Welcome to this neck of the wood, and enjoy the writings. best, bert -
Bit harsh! He was only saying it's pop music, not it's not real music. What's wrong with pop music!
Yeah, and I thought of not posting it, and later of retracting it for that very reason. However, this is only the formal side of it, and the underlying tendencies are still there and congruent with what Bilbo has been writing in other posts. Edit: I've decided to retract it. The assumed underlying tendencies may not have been present, and he does have a point about some formal capacities of music not having style boundaries. Good point even.

Bonjour, Anis! Bienvenue à BC! I'm sure you'll do OK. Your English seems more than good enough, and will get better from your just being here, I gather. Enjoy the talk! best, bert

What Amplifier brands do you have a hard time finding?
BassTractor replied to TomRichards's topic in Amps and Cabs
You mean UK only, or Europe? In case, here in Norway we can't find Genz Benz as far as I know. -
Using a bass head (MAG300 Evo ii) without a cab
BassTractor replied to offhegoes's topic in Amps and Cabs
Can't remember any of them without a net search, but new amps of this type are very rare these days. Though I seem to remember that some Hi-Fi freaks swear by some of them. I'd guesssuppose they say the distortion introduced by yet another stage is more musical than the distortion found in many or strong transistors, Idunno. What I really was thinking of though was 60s amps (some 50s too maybe?) that are still in use, as there seems to be some degree of revival of using them old ones. The Dutch bass forum has had some exchange about old solid state amps, IMS. Also here in Norway there is some "milieu" for this. I own an old solid state - probably with output transformer - that a guitarist I know swore by, until he moved out of the country and left it with me. Have never used it, but feel I must try it now. BTW, by what I wrote I was not stating that valves have nothing to do with it. I'm still no expert, and have no idea about how valves would respond. Gut feeling says they're vulnerable, but mind seems to say they essentially work like transistors. Anyway, the MAG heads are safe, and that's the core here. I was just afraid of an untruth spreading. -
I am a good hearted person, and will let things go a bit cheaper to help others, but I will always check posting history now, and if I think it's just some one buying and selling they can look elsewhere for a bargain. They are doing nothing wrong of course, I just won't sell to some one I feel is just in it for the money.
So very much this. There is a fine or broad line or area (dunno really) between formal demands to behaviour and that which we feel or sense, and both of the latter are just as important as the former.

You'll never learn to play the bass, Ray!

One aspect of the popularity of metal is that it tends to attract people who are generally more interested in music and who'll use more of their disposable income on music than the likes of Brittney Spears fans. In my time of running a CD-shop, I had to note with sadness that these "fanatic" customers were so few that they could not keep the shop alive. The people that kept the shop alive were those very many that bought very few CDs every year, and they all bought the same. Based on that lack-of-science, my guess would be that these band-members-to-be could belong to a similar group of more-than-averagely-interested-in-music people. Demm! Ran out of hyphens! Will be back after restarting my pc.
Someone take his looper away.
Here's where I think an alternative comes in: not using a looper connected to a bass, but building a loop without bass parts on a Kaossilator or similar, and then playing bass to it. It's like a band who never get tired of letting you practise and/or develop ideas. Me, I love it. I just make something impromptu on a Kaossilator, and then must find something to do on the bass to go with it. I find that challenging and fun. This may not teach me to play bass, but at least I'm having fun whilst not learning to play the bass.
Him asking me for £500 does not make him an arsehole. ME asking him to do me a cheap deal makes me the arsehole.
Very good point, imho, and one I can't recollect having seen here in these discussions. If I was merely lucky and scored it for just 30 quid, and then found my mate needed one like that, I'd probably let him have it for 30 quid. The moment however that he demands that I hand it over for 30 quid is the moment he damages our friendship considerably. Here on BC we're all allowed to have our own (=different) community sensitivities or lack thereof, but one's own community sensitivities do not come with the right to demand that others too follow them. I think that this at least is a clear cut line. Simplified, "be kind" or "make money", but don't call others "stupid" or "arsehole" because they have a different stance. That said, some people are arseholes, and some are stupid of course.

I concur with Steve, Richsteve and Lensteve. Enjoy the site! Oh, and you'll find BC filled to the rim with Welshies and ambassadors living there. You'll not walk alone. best, bertsteve
