First, and before I forget, the only amp I've tried the sub harmonic on was the Ashdown MAG 300. On that amp, it was only usable as an effect on slow notes, as it came in so slowly. Others may be better, but I do have the slight feeling that it is gonna cost due to the way good suboctaving works. Lustworthy amps like Aguilar ToneHammer and Genz Benz Streamliner and many others are above the budget, I reckon, and since your nice warm tone may not come from a very expensive (valve) head, I think I'd have a look at an Ashdown for example. Now I found my MAG 300 w. 410 quite uninspiring myself, but its EQ does give it flexibility when one is willing to dial. In your case this could mean a MAG 300 and two vertically stacked 210 cabs if they do them. The step up to the AMB series is discussed. I haven't tried it, and have no idea whether the step up is worth it or not. You could also try an Orange Terror Bass 500 head with just about any cab. It's the famous one trick pony with heavily dipped mid frequencies that might hinder push through, BUT many people love it. Still, me, I'd probably go for a not too dear class D head like the Ashdown MiBass 550 with an Ashdown CL cab that fits the budget. Some good EQ on the head, and you can make a fairly good nice warm tone. Oh, now I think of it: how about used gear? Or did you already state that? b, b
providing additional cab can be fitted under Neath
Ouch! There is not a lot of space under Neath. Might we be able to convince you to fit them under Holyhead instead? Or at least under Bangor? What others say: ignore the size of one speaker. Rather concentrate on total area. The days have passed that the godawful speakers of yesteryear could be "judged" by size. Before we narrow it down, do you have a budget? 1500 quid will near buy you heaven on earth, but maybe you won't go there. best, bert

Hey Rob, Welcome, man, and thanks for the nice read. I can relate to a lot of what you wrote, including the photography. Just that in my case, I'm about to give it up, as the bass requires my time. Just learned the other strings are meant to be tuned differently, so now I've suddenly gotten the A, the D and the G to relate to as well, making a total of four (4) different notes! A 300% jump! Anyway, don't mind me, and enjoy the site! There's some good lads and lasses around. best, bert (Al not Ro)

Ah, it's only because nobody likes me around here, so I have time to check BC twentyfourseven inbetween customers, kids and exes. Welcome, Alex! You were lucky not only finding us, but even getting the attention of both Dandelion and Cheers Leen, two exquisite specimenses of the whomb-man race! That, or you're demn shrewd and cunning. Anyway, I hope you like your stay. Just relax and put and end to putting an end to people 'n' stuff. Also don't be a stranger. Partaking is the best medicine. Be kind to others and let no-one tell you otherwise. Enjoy! best, bert

Tempted by an Ashdown Mi Bass 550..........Close.

The estimated Mr. Neil Bargen-Sellers means this one: http://basschat.co.u...ass-550-for-obt Don't buy it from him though. He doesn't know yet that he needs both his MiBass 550 AND his Terror Bass. b, b -
Nobody even care enough to warn the OP against pre-EB bongos? I guarantee you that they do not hold water when compared with the Bongos that Ernie Ball builds. (Sorry, but someone had to say it. Itz za loow.) best, bert

Nooby Q: Little Bastard 30 into miBass 550?
BassTractor replied to BassTractor's topic in Amps and Cabs
Thanks big time guys! This is litterally ("literally" doesn't ring well with me) five minutes before I'm off to fetch one. Have decided for the 550 even if the 220 sounds better - if for nothing else then at any rate for the silver front that is easier to read for my old eyes. As to the volume being post effects, I just assume it is, but it doesn't even really matter, coz I'd always be careful, and also use two of those PPCs. I'll surely make me a dummy load if this turns out like I hope it will, and Geoff's experience sounds very promising and encouraging indeed. Also, I'll take to heart what Matybigfro wrote once i've translated it to Norwegian and understood the point about the stereo jack. I had no idea that one could buy dummy loads with outputs. That sounds just bloody great! Yes, I'll report back as soon as I can. Now stop keeping me away from the car keys! b, b -
Didn't know I had cool records at all, but nows I think of it, maybe the Motorpsycho: "Hyena" / "Bonny Lee" - promo cds that came with the 3CD version of Black Hole / Blank Canvas. It looks quite like a vinyl single, including a physical groove, but that's not the point. The point is the CD plastic is all black, with no discernable metal layer anywhere, and you keep wondering how the feck the CD player is able to throw enough laser light through it, and however that light is even reflected by the pits and .. er .. non-pits. In all of its simplicity, I think it's much cooler than any of my lim.ed. stuff with outlandish covers and the like. This one does not shout. It just is. best, bert

Tempted by an Ashdown Mi Bass 550..........Close.
BassTractor replied to weepaul's topic in Amps and Cabs
From what I seem to understand from reading about them , and I don't know what one can do with the EQ, but a MiBass initially seems to not resemble the classic in-your-face TE sound. Dunno about newer TEs. From what I read, the MiBass is a lot less alive than that. Deader, one might state. That said, I think you could push the higher mids and probably the lower mids, and I have a slight feeling some compression on that band could help too. Better brains than mine will now hasten to correct me, and you will get your answer. I'm shrewd, I am. best, bert -
Nooby Q: Little Bastard 30 into miBass 550?
BassTractor replied to BassTractor's topic in Amps and Cabs
Thanks, Barkin. Yup, mate, you's missen sum'ten. Note the difference between MiBass 550 and Little Bastard 550, see. The Little Bastard 550 is the one with the pre from the LB 30 and the power stage from the MiBass 550 - in all essence. The pre in the MiBass 550 OTOH is different, and probably consists of surface-mount miniature electrickery. My own Little Bastard being the 30W version, if I go all stadium* like, to still get most of that LB sound I'd want to put its pre into the power stage of a MiBass 550. Cabwise, I'd put two LB 112 cabs on the MiBass 550, and an Orange PPC108 on the output trafo of the Little Bastard 30. [hums: "Oh Nubie Q. (dum dum dum dum dum dum dum) Oh Nubie Q."] b, b * stadium: [n] a place that is not a bedroom -
Soundbars vs bookshelf speakers...
BassTractor replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in General Discussion
Good stuff, those B&W 601 S3. I must admit I'm a little sceptical as to how they perform in a bookshelf. Might do very well though - my cheap Yamahas perform relatively well in such conditions. Then again, they're not squeezed inbetween books, and I experimented with the space in the bookshelf, as in height between shelves and thus the immediate room they operate in. The speakers are only living together with my tiny bass rigs on the same shelves, so there's lots of air around them. At any rate, the B&W sub (was it SW 600 or something?) should work, but you could use a lot of different ones, also much cheaper ones. One just needs to match them loosely, as we're not talking about getting the very most out of the set here - bookshelf placement and all. Me, I'd get a cheapish bookshelf sub with a crossover frequency you can dial in yourself. YMMV. Of course, if you're not on a budget, I can help you design the doom system with horns that start in your basement and come out of the bookshelves in your living room. We'll get you a bookshelf rig of doom in no time! Bookshelves really don't deserve the flak they're getting. b, b -
. Oh! Here be the bassoon. Be forewarned though. This is pop music. Well crafted, quirky pop music, admittedly, but pop nonetheless. b, b

Then again, this here Mo band from Holland were the essholes who ditched the bass as well. I love them though. Who can not love a band with a bassoon? Must find a song with that bassoon. best, bert
12AX7s have the highest gain, then 5751, 12AT7s and 12AY7s.
Yeah, I know, but Ruby Tubes themselves make that claim, and different AXs are different. So I feel they probably mean that these are low gain as far as AXs go. b, b

Soundbars vs bookshelf speakers...
BassTractor replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in General Discussion
As above, really. Some soundbars are really very good, but they're expensive. Most are just overpriced fashion products. Approach with extreme care. A relatively cheap bookshelf sub (one just puts it in a place where it doesn't attract attention - btw Yamaha do a few neat ones with really decent quality) in addition to your bookshelf speakers would probably be a better investment for covering everything from classical guitar to scarie movies. Me, against my will, I've gone from large, obtrusive speakers to bookshelf speakers (will buy the sub as soon as bass GAS vanishes, which possibly is never), and I must admit I did not lose my lust for life after all.
IMHO, if BOSE can't get it right then no one will.
Ouch! Sorry Damon, but IMNSHO: if Bose ever get it right once, I'll have to find me some filt hat recipies on the double. I had to sell the stuff for several years. Never sold a single set. Couldn't get myself to lie to customers. Boss angry, Bose angry, Basstractor happy, non-Bose customer happy. Two out of four. One can do worse.
Maybe play her favorite music through quality speakers more often?
Word! Says my wife after having given me crap about our expensive Hi-Fi set for years: "If we ever divorce, I'm keeping the Hi-Fi. You'll always buy another set, but I won't. But I still want that sound." Yup, she has that set now. (I'm only happy we sold the B&W 802s to my sister, so the ex now just has some Infinity speakers. Ha, the sweet taste of revenge! ) best, bert -
Nooby Q: Little Bastard 30 into miBass 550. Can one do that? I was thinking of taking the LB30 signal from the Effects Send and shove it into the Effects Return of the MiBass 550. Maybe that's all wrong and maybe there is still another way, what do I know. Any advice? I'd have a few 108s connected to the Little Bastard so as not to get another divorce - from the LB's output trafo this time. Got the idea from Ashdown themselves, in the way that their Little Bastard 550 essentially is the pre from the Little Bastard 30 with the power stage from the MiBass 550. best, bert

Switching in effects send/receive jacks?
BassTractor replied to BassTractor's topic in Amps and Cabs
Thanks, Pete. Yes, we are. Your answer gave me a whole new take on the matter. You know, it never even crossed my mind that the other thread (on loop output voltage and impedance) contained that same thing with the blend. I'm still wondering how this works electronically, but maybe at these levels, there is no danger for output components if a signal comes the other way as well. Maybe I should put my poor head to rest ... Thanks, mate! best, bert -
