1. As said many a time, this thread is bloody fantastic. It deserves a bump, folks. Anyone know of or tried the Ruby Tubes 12AX7? They're very expensive, and reportedly both have low gain and a full, robust timbre. Also, they are hand picked! Yes, no less. I guess a 15 year old girl somewhere in China or wherever looks at the paper box, and starts contemplating which valve to pick for that exact box. Brings a tear to my eye. :-D b, b
2. Hey Tony, I liked your intro - especially the part where you wrote you love bass. :-) Welcome to the surface then, Tony, and I'm glad to see you have read so much that you probably know the drill: credit card (plus pin code) in a sealed envelope. My inbox. Enjoy, man! best, bert
3. This thread is Beauty and Beast in one! Not that we don't condone it - it's all good - but I do believe it's about time someone mentioned that: If you have frequencies in your body, there's loads of alternative medicine treaters that can do away with them, or at least treat them. I'm not joking either: the whole alternative scene seems to be dealing in frequencies these days. Me, I just tell them to stay well away from MY frequencies. That important note aside, and I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but: Extremely inportant for the timbre of a tone are the time related changes in harmonic and non-harmonic content during the very first few milli- or centi-seconds of the tone. In other words: remove the attack from a tone, and the listener will have a hard time recognising the instrument. (Side note: this awareness was used in, and is what lifted the 80s Roland D-50 synthesizer well above its price range and above its terrible, terrible simplicity.) Just thought it might be good to mention it. Sorry if it was brought up earlier. best, bert
4.
Re "Gorgomyte" : Who gives a f**k about the name ?
You do not seriously mean to express that you really believe that any of us really give a sjit, do you? I hope not. It's just part of keeping bc a partly lighthearted place that is fun to visit. b, b
5. OK, I admit I had no idea that it was an octave pedal you were thinking of, but the rest was evident though. In this case, the question had to be where the delay came from when using the loop. b, b
6. Great one, Wot. Congrats! Yes please do let us know more when they're housebroken and you feel you can update the first impression. best, bert
7. OK, finally having locked up the Orange Collection, at the cost of using up 2 of my five granted license numbers, my first impression is that it's totally awesome. I can't judge the modelling yet, but the enormous amounts of possibilities in the Orange Collection, and the sound of it, make it a winner for me already. b, b
8. Yeah, I remember now. Using the standard 95% confidence interval, If you were left-handed you were averagely 5% better at being a painter, musician, or drummer. (very old, lame joke, but hard to resist, and I hastily repeat that of all musicians, I like drummers the most.) b, b
9.
That's why I like gorgomyte so much
Post all you like. I'm NOT off to Mordor to get hold of it. In fact I even fear its name. "Gawr Gohw Myte". Sounds like something that'll find its way out of the tin by night, and climb the bedpost.
10. Hehehe. Great answer to your follow up question! Me, I'm now gonna put every effect I own in the loop, like Kaoss Pads and studio stuff and the like. Those, and Kaoss Pads. I feel secure they'll work just fine there, and might just do something nice in addition. One never knows. To be sure though, I'll add an extra Kaoss Pad. b, b
11.
Left handed people have some advantages over righties... apparently.
Really? But to be serious for just one minute, I seem to recall they did some research and found out something about the relationship between being left-handed and art, as well as other stuff I can't remember right now. BTW, you should hear Leen's music. They're no slouches. b, b
12. The AmpliTube Orange plug-in is on offer until July 17th for subscribers to the Orange USA e-mail list. At an offer price of 40 USD or 32 Euros, this apparently is 60 or 70 % off. AT Orange is a plug-in for AmpliTube 3 for Mac or PC, and spawns 8 head models including the AD200B, a combo or two and several cabs. Now, I haven't used the program myself yet, so I have no idea if it's good, or if the offer is good. But it looks good! The purchase and download process was very frustrating though, as no clear function overview or process guidance was offered. After purchase, all the needed software for this collection gets downloadable for free, and consists of AmpliTube 3, a custom shop, a rack unit shop and a license admin program. Head over to Orange USA (...or cab over if you so choose). best, bert
13.
It's a personal choice and should be respected whether one agrees with it or not.
Yup! Happily, I don't see any disrespect in the responses - only questions and a certain degree of disagreement on the reasoning that you willingly provided as a response to other people's reasoning. It's an exchange of ideas. Me, I've had roughly 150 international deals, and the experience has been virtually flawless. One day something will go wrong, and I will use words I had to learn from other people than me mum, but after that I also will remember that the other deals went sooo well. b, b
14. Dunno if that's a good thing. We had a teacher in catholic school who was ... er ... friendly. On a more uplifitng note however, here in Norway, the Norwegian Post Office have willingly changed from taking care of your goods to throwing them about, and not only to be more effective and keep prices down. They have clearmindedly started a spiral where customers feel forced to augment average package weight dramatically through the recent decades, and thus use considerably more of their yearly income on postage. Me, I rather fetch or deliver and take the trip as if it was a holiday. Or rather: make a holiday out of it. Life is better that way. Then again, you won't see me meeting up on middle "ground" when dealing with Brits. Sorry, Brits! b, b
15.
The output voltage of a loop typically runs 1v at 600 to 1000 ohms. That makes it not a good match for floor pedals that expect maybe 100mv with the 25kohm output impedance of a bass.
Thanks, guys! In my head, this means I assumed right then. Correct me if I'm wrong. b, b
16. The wonders of synchronicibility! So the lefties are awkward and stupid, eh? Indeed, as you already hint at, there might just be some science in relating this to people as well. See, I'm a leftie, and I've always felt less well-adapted to and less well-adopted by society, and more stupid than most. There could just be something in it! best, bert (I admit that I should've stopped this long ago, but then these days the nights are long, the white wine is silky, and my longing back to Wales suddenly gets the best of me.)
17.
[cig ass pic]
You'll need a lighter too: b, b
18.
I have problem with shipping at buyers cost though...
Great, Andy! I'll only buy from you hereafter! best, bert
19. Cleaning frets? Our Cleaning Frets™ do this automatically, but still only on 18V basses. We'll soon have a 9V version ready though. They're in the last stages of testing. Put in your orders now. I've paid my 20 quid several times.
20. Mmmmm ... twelve Mars bars!!! .....
21. This is a noob question, I know, but noobs do still exist, so ... I've often wondered what type of Voltage and output impedance can be found in amp's effect loop outputs, and what type of effect gear builders think of when building amps with these. I understand there's a difference between feeding an "effected" signal to the preamp or sending an pre-amped signal to an effect unit, but that is not what I'm trying to ask about here. It's just about the electronics in this: voltages, impedances and whatever else that is linked to it. I'd noobly assume that say a Boss floor effect will do nicely with both hot and less hot pups/built-in preamps, but then, does the average preamp in the amplifier change any voltage at all? I'd assume most head preamps do not actually amplify, but that some do. I'd also noobly assume that a unit like a TC Electronic G# or M350 would expect say a 1V signal with low output impedance, and might not do well with a cold passive pup. These assumptions may be on Mars for all I know. So, does it matter at all (remember: voltage and impedance wise that is - I'm still not talking about preamp settings affecting the signal before or after an effect unit), where in the chain you put your different units? Thanks for any info that helps my poor brain. best, bert
22. Can't seem to find this being mentioned or shown yet, so here goes - hopefully not again: Marc Vanderkley reckons his new amp Aurora will be ready in October. Should make an impact at some level, seeing as how the previous one was lauded with weird oak leave thingies and whatnot. Now before you search your lining for change, do please realise this thing is gonna cost. That means "money". I mean: serious money. - Input for passive/active instruments, 0/-12dB. - 5-band active tone control. - Loop with dry/wet blend. - Continuously Variable Damping factor to control speaker damping - Master volume - The pre-amp is built up from high end discreet audio op-amps. - Stereo Aux in, Send/Return, - Headphones out with adapter jack to mini jack. - Balanced DI out, Pre/post eq, Ground lift, - Tuner out. - 700 Watt @ 4 Ohm, 1200 Watt @ 2 Ohm. - Weight around 5 Kg. - The power-amp is class D with switch-mode power supply. - It is two rack units high and comes with rack-ears for 19" mounting. - Supplied in a sturdy road case.
23. Elliot, any special type of haggises you prefer? Each time I was in Scotland, someone would explain me there's mainly two types of them: the ones with the long left legs that run clockwise around the hill, and the ones with the not-short right legs that run the other way around. If they're on the same isopleth, it soon is too late for paracetamol, and one can just pick them. Idunno what's best myself. Don't even taste any difference, and have never seen any that was not on my plate. b, b
24. Hey Elliot, Welcome! Sadly, that is not funny at all. It's deplorable, and we lament it. But hey, horses for courses, so if you enjoy doing it, who are we to stop you? (Must admit I enjoy it myself.) Another sad thing is you're one of the blokes who didn't buy enough Brora thirty odd years ago. You're responsible, man! That out of the way, enjoy the site! You'll not only find friendly people here, but also some Scottish people. best, bert
25.
Exactly the answer I was looking for
In that case, Marcus, here's my answer: The fundamentals of the bass sound like they're good & solid (neck & body), sort the electrics out n you're rockin'...new wiring loom from kiogon (bc electrical maestro), replacement pup (wizard or some other similar quality) and the rest is aesthetics, if the tuners aren't stable enough for ya swap 'em once you've tried 'em, hipshot are superb... :-D best, bert
