1.
Sorry, that's MS30.
Of course. We all knew the MS20 was a Korg anyway.
2. From what I seem to understand from reading about them , and I don't know what one can do with the EQ, but a MiBass initially seems to not resemble the classic in-your-face TE sound. Dunno about newer TEs. From what I read, the MiBass is a lot less alive than that. Deader, one might state. That said, I think you could push the higher mids and probably the lower mids, and I have a slight feeling some compression on that band could help too. Better brains than mine will now hasten to correct me, and you will get your answer. I'm shrewd, I am. best, bert
3. Thanks, Barkin. Yup, mate, you's missen sum'ten. Note the difference between MiBass 550 and Little Bastard 550, see. The Little Bastard 550 is the one with the pre from the LB 30 and the power stage from the MiBass 550 - in all essence. The pre in the MiBass 550 OTOH is different, and probably consists of surface-mount miniature electrickery. My own Little Bastard being the 30W version, if I go all stadium* like, to still get most of that LB sound I'd want to put its pre into the power stage of a MiBass 550. Cabwise, I'd put two LB 112 cabs on the MiBass 550, and an Orange PPC108 on the output trafo of the Little Bastard 30. [hums: "Oh Nubie Q. (dum dum dum dum dum dum dum) Oh Nubie Q."] b, b * stadium: [n] a place that is not a bedroom
4. Good stuff, those B&W 601 S3. I must admit I'm a little sceptical as to how they perform in a bookshelf. Might do very well though - my cheap Yamahas perform relatively well in such conditions. Then again, they're not squeezed inbetween books, and I experimented with the space in the bookshelf, as in height between shelves and thus the immediate room they operate in. The speakers are only living together with my tiny bass rigs on the same shelves, so there's lots of air around them. At any rate, the B&W sub (was it SW 600 or something?) should work, but you could use a lot of different ones, also much cheaper ones. One just needs to match them loosely, as we're not talking about getting the very most out of the set here - bookshelf placement and all. Me, I'd get a cheapish bookshelf sub with a crossover frequency you can dial in yourself. YMMV. Of course, if you're not on a budget, I can help you design the doom system with horns that start in your basement and come out of the bookshelves in your living room. We'll get you a bookshelf rig of doom in no time! Bookshelves really don't deserve the flak they're getting. b, b
5. . Oh! Here be the bassoon. Be forewarned though. This is pop music. Well crafted, quirky pop music, admittedly, but pop nonetheless. b, b
6. Then again, this here Mo band from Holland were the essholes who ditched the bass as well. I love them though. Who can not love a band with a bassoon? Must find a song with that bassoon. best, bert
7.
Still looking for the 'Like' button!
Me too. I love its hat! Though the propellors could have been more pronounced ... (yes, you get me right )
8.
12AX7s have the highest gain, then 5751, 12AT7s and 12AY7s.
Yeah, I know, but Ruby Tubes themselves make that claim, and different AXs are different. So I feel they probably mean that these are low gain as far as AXs go. b, b
9. As above, really. Some soundbars are really very good, but they're expensive. Most are just overpriced fashion products. Approach with extreme care. A relatively cheap bookshelf sub (one just puts it in a place where it doesn't attract attention - btw Yamaha do a few neat ones with really decent quality) in addition to your bookshelf speakers would probably be a better investment for covering everything from classical guitar to scarie movies. Me, against my will, I've gone from large, obtrusive speakers to bookshelf speakers (will buy the sub as soon as bass GAS vanishes, which possibly is never), and I must admit I did not lose my lust for life after all.
IMHO, if BOSE can't get it right then no one will.
Ouch! Sorry Damon, but IMNSHO: if Bose ever get it right once, I'll have to find me some filt hat recipies on the double. I had to sell the stuff for several years. Never sold a single set. Couldn't get myself to lie to customers. Boss angry, Bose angry, Basstractor happy, non-Bose customer happy. Two out of four. One can do worse.
Maybe play her favorite music through quality speakers more often?
Word! Says my wife after having given me crap about our expensive Hi-Fi set for years: "If we ever divorce, I'm keeping the Hi-Fi. You'll always buy another set, but I won't. But I still want that sound." Yup, she has that set now. (I'm only happy we sold the B&W 802s to my sister, so the ex now just has some Infinity speakers. Ha, the sweet taste of revenge! ) best, bert
10. Nooby Q: Little Bastard 30 into miBass 550. Can one do that? I was thinking of taking the LB30 signal from the Effects Send and shove it into the Effects Return of the MiBass 550. Maybe that's all wrong and maybe there is still another way, what do I know. Any advice? I'd have a few 108s connected to the Little Bastard so as not to get another divorce - from the LB's output trafo this time. Got the idea from Ashdown themselves, in the way that their Little Bastard 550 essentially is the pre from the Little Bastard 30 with the power stage from the MiBass 550. best, bert
11. Thanks, Pete. Yes, we are. Your answer gave me a whole new take on the matter. You know, it never even crossed my mind that the other thread (on loop output voltage and impedance) contained that same thing with the blend. I'm still wondering how this works electronically, but maybe at these levels, there is no danger for output components if a signal comes the other way as well. Maybe I should put my poor head to rest ... Thanks, mate! best, bert
12.
the 'surprised' MB rig...
13.
Hermit of Mink Hollow = genius. Much of the rest = overproduced dross. IMO of course!
May the gods (the todds?) strike me for saying this, but you do have a good point there. b, b
14. Why hide, Axe? We're wimps! We aren't gonna harm you!?!? Must say I have a hard time getting all of this. I'd think a typically 1V / 600 Ohm output would give me a signal fitting for say one of my Kaoss Pads, but no matter what I try, I get no sound. Maybe it's about time Bert stopped trying to understand stuff, and tried to learn bass instead of linking every box in the house. b, b
15. Ha! One of my first memories from BC is exactly someone mentioning him, and someone else expressing to be happy to see some love for him on the boards. Not gonna check, but I think maybe the culprits were in fact Nigel xilddx and me, me mentioning him, and Nigel being happy. He's been mentioned a few times since in the near two years that have gone. I seem to recall that the Scouser band The Rickenbackers have been mentioned somewhat more, which of course is goodbad reasonableunreasonable. Yes, he's a genius, and his music got even better after he took my advice to heart. Seriously though, I can imagine how one composes and arranges a tune, but how the feck does he even come up with these ideas? I mean: "Lucky Guy"? The slightly meandering sense of harmonic drive through use of the chromatics? Wonderful, wonderful! "Can We Still Be Friends"? Sooo simple, again (just looking at the intervals) and yet so strong in taking one to and through musically emotional landscapes. Fantastic! As a composer, I do complex really well. You want "advanced"? Ready tomorrow! You want two hundred parts and interlockingtwinedmultipoly? Gimme a few days. But writing a song like Todd can? Chanceless, and will be for the rest of my life. OK, back to my Toddaltar. It's been a few hours already. best, bert
16. Is there a standard to this? Can one use these without thinking, or must one use the manual for the specific model? Here's my two thoughts: I'd noobly suppose the Send does switch off the internal signal, so the return and the original signals don't "push" against each at the risk of damage to one of their outputs. I'd also noobly suppose the Return does switch too, so for example in the case one imports a signal from another source, this imported signal and a possible internal signal do not "push" each other at the risk of damaging one of their outputs. Though I do sense I'm overlooking something logical here, my head will not cooperate right now. Any comments? best, bert
17.
just increasing my overdraft before sending it your way
:-D
18. I have no clue. That said, my CV 50s Precision into an Orange Micro Terror guitar amp works wonderfully, and I can decide on clean or distortion easily. Haven't tried a Bongo yet, but will soon. The Micro Terror is almost gratis. best, bert
19. .
20. . Congrats, and relax knowing we love you. Where's that fuzzy emoticon? I still have trouble understanding what they all mean. Anyway, now is a good time to please send back one of my two basses, and of course I will pay the courier once it arrives. best, bert
21. A post from the "Bands with one or more guitars" thread! Right here! The sacrilege! Roll out the KZ! Wait! It's one of those optical illusions! If you stare at it long enough, a bass and a Hartke thing may appear in the background. Thanks for posting, good Lord. I liked that. best, bert
22. As said many a time, this thread is bloody fantastic. It deserves a bump, folks. Anyone know of or tried the Ruby Tubes 12AX7? They're very expensive, and reportedly both have low gain and a full, robust timbre. Also, they are hand picked! Yes, no less. I guess a 15 year old girl somewhere in China or wherever looks at the paper box, and starts contemplating which valve to pick for that exact box. Brings a tear to my eye. :-D b, b
23. Hey Tony, I liked your intro - especially the part where you wrote you love bass. :-) Welcome to the surface then, Tony, and I'm glad to see you have read so much that you probably know the drill: credit card (plus pin code) in a sealed envelope. My inbox. Enjoy, man! best, bert
24. This thread is Beauty and Beast in one! Not that we don't condone it - it's all good - but I do believe it's about time someone mentioned that: If you have frequencies in your body, there's loads of alternative medicine treaters that can do away with them, or at least treat them. I'm not joking either: the whole alternative scene seems to be dealing in frequencies these days. Me, I just tell them to stay well away from MY frequencies. That important note aside, and I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but: Extremely inportant for the timbre of a tone are the time related changes in harmonic and non-harmonic content during the very first few milli- or centi-seconds of the tone. In other words: remove the attack from a tone, and the listener will have a hard time recognising the instrument. (Side note: this awareness was used in, and is what lifted the 80s Roland D-50 synthesizer well above its price range and above its terrible, terrible simplicity.) Just thought it might be good to mention it. Sorry if it was brought up earlier. best, bert
25.
Re "Gorgomyte" : Who gives a f**k about the name ?
You do not seriously mean to express that you really believe that any of us really give a sjit, do you? I hope not. It's just part of keeping bc a partly lighthearted place that is fun to visit. b, b
