Hehe. Yeah, I know boom. Is this x about the pickguard, or is there more to it so there are sound reasons for choosing an x? b, b

I repeat myself when under stress, but: Congrats! I heard some bass! Now all we need is for you practise this stuff (ask them for the tabs) and that you put a playalong on YouTube. It's not too fast, is it? best, bert

Hey Yolanda, Welcome to BC! Apparently you have a lot to contribute, and I'm sure we'll be hanging from your lips trying to absorb each and every syllable. Me, I noobly have no idea who you are, so I'd ask you to please cut me some slack, so I can find out before getting jealous. BTW, people are not having pops at famous people here. That is a very, very sad misunderstanding. No fear. You'll do just fine. Enjoy the site and its banter! best, bert
Life's a long song is among my top 10 all time fave raves, a beautiful song.
Cool! "Life Is a Long Song" is among my top 1 all time fave raves - most of the time. Bought the ep for like 50p and was an immediate fan. That ep must be something of the best they ever did. Anyway, I'm seriously contemplating to die happy. For that, all I need to do is to buy me a new guitar and learn to play LIaLS. That and "Nursie". This contemplation has lasted for four decades now. I love the song that much. BTW, the very, very first song I tried to teach myself when coming home with my first bass, was, of course, "Living in the Past". Fave albums are probably still "A Passion Play" and "Thick as a Brick". So much loveliness within those pieces - patchy as they may be. Then again, dozens of other albums are close runners up for me, so it's really hard to choose. best, bert -

Sorry you didn't turn into a treehugger. I'd still be as impolite as to say: go back to those trees, and repeat the song "Songs from the Wood" until you either love it or litterally throw up. I think it's a masterful song. Other than that, there's more where Living in the Past comes from - as in the period of their first three albums. Many memorable songs I don't remember. They have so much character and IMHO uniqueness. "Aqualung" is by many seen as the quintessential album. Personally I would add "Warchild". There are som unforgettable songs on that one, like "Two Fingers", "Bungle in the Jungle", "Sea Lion". Uh oh. Battery on my laptop. Bye! -
In that case, work your way forward from Rubber Soul (though take Skank's advice about Yellow Submarine - although Hey Bulldog is worth a listen). Sgt Pepper suffers, I think, from being overly lauded as THE album that changed everything. it's good, but probably not THAT good. If I had to choose one album for my desert island I'd struggle to decide between the White album or Abbey Road. I reckon it would be Abbey Road by the slimmest of margins.
This is exactly what I would've written. That is: if I'd been able to write it. Whatever you do else, you must hear "Blackbird" and you must hear "The Long and Winding Road". IMEHO (excrutiatingly) Have fun! Edit: and yes, indeed "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "For No-one" best, bert
I must be lucky. I've just turned 40, and my 14lb (!) Warwick Streamer LX6 still isn't an issue.
. Sorry, mate, but they should have been more clear. It doesn't happen right after turning 40 but it's a gradual process. It starts when one turns 40 and five months, and is finished one week later. Sorry for being the bringer of bad tidings. Seriously though, and I think this may be a good thread to ask: - Do people have experience with double straps / other stap types that rest on both shoulders? I can imagine such solutions coming with their own drawbacks, but then again, if one has a serious problem, it might just help. - Do people have experience with routing away some of the "unused" wood from the back of the body? Certainly several possible drawbacks there. I'd expect more neck dive, but then again one can move the position of the strap buttons. Also, some woods might start to split after routing, as the wood will react to changing humidity. That could be handled though. best, bert

How has your day been as a bassist?
BassTractor replied to charliethornton's topic in General Discussion
Nice story indeed. Thanks for sharing, and congrats! best, bert -
Now, I don't know a thing about your experience level, so you may know this stuff a lot better than I do. No looking down intended. But I noticed you hadn't received an answer yet, so I thought it was better I answered than nobody. That said: From the look of it, it seems as if you may have had too high hopes for the difference between 180 and 307 W, which sadly is not much. People will hopefully correct me if I misremember, but I seem to recall you'd need ten times the wattage to gain an extra 6 dB. If the new combo has a 15 as well, IMS that doesn't help either. As far as I can understand, the 410 is seriously loud in smaller venues like pubs and churches. You could try the following: Create more headroom by turning down the lowest frequencies. The audience's ears will construct them back in. Experiment with the next button (filter frequency). Switch off the sub octave. Engage the onboard compressor in a relatively mild setting. Put some form of distortion on the signal and possibly tame this with the frequency knob to the left of the treble knob as well as the treble knob. Adjust gain and volume up. There should be space for that now. Experiment with combo placement so you avoid phase-unalignment in frequencies that are important for you Other than that, I'm not too fond of the idea of using different brand cabs together. Unless one is very lucky, they will have very different impedance curves both frequency-wise and amplitude-wise, and this is risky not only for the sound you get but also to the point of possible damage to the drivers. Well, that was my try. Good luck! best, bert

Reading how people lend out or don't lend out, I'm wondering whether there's anybody here who's on the borrowing end and who shows no respect for the borrowed gear. Tmust be me, as I seem the only one who has not posted yet. Sadly though, if I borrow something, I treat it with the utmost care. As to lending out, I'm the sucker who can't say no. Also, I sooo want others to experience the same joy I have with the gear, especially if they're young and unexperienced, that I almost push it. Yes, I'm a lost case. On the other hand, before last year, I'd never owned my own amp, and always rented or borrowed. Someone must have lent it out to me. best, bert

Classic Albums - Zappa Apostrophe - Great Documentary
Bass Tractor. You're taking it personally -- exactly what i was trying not to do. I never said his music wasn't structured. So your entire argument is based on misinformation. I made the point earlier about scoring a cat walking across a piano would be difficult, but it'll still sound like a cat walking across a piano. Oh well. I guess I didn't state my case very well. Or maybe it was stated too well. I'm not sure.
Thanks, Lowender, for a measured response. It's much appreciated. I don't think I'm taking it personally at all. I am not a part in the discussion about Zappa vs. Beatles, and your calling Zappa's music names does not touch me. I'm just calling you out on net forum behaviour that I think does damage to BC. Must admit that when I wrote the word "structure", I knew very well that you could decide to call me out on it (though that was not my aim with writing it anyway). The point though was never that you litterally (literally?) said so much, as much as that your denigrating remarks more than hinted at it - whether you meant to or not. See, good music by definition is structured music, whilst structure in music does not mean the music must be good. Then, when you regard The Beatles' music as high art, your evaluation must contain an understanding of the quality of the music's structure. So: I don't think you stated your case either badly or too well, as I think what you stated was a clear representation of your case. The error however lies in the case itself, as, inherently, it partly is based on (ac)countable entities and partly on denying same. best, bert -

Can the ShuttleMax do a good Streamliner impression?

IIRC, someone stated some months ago that the voicings are different enough that a ShuttleMax will not do a good Streamliner impression. I've tried to find it to no avail, so here's a new thread. So, howe sayest thee, your ladyshippes ande lordshippes? Can the ShuttleMaxes do this? Can they come close enough? Is it dependent on exactly which of them? Thanks! best, bert
