Full ban indeed. Never ever allow bullies to decide the course through threatening, manipulating and other general bullying. (BTW, it shouldn't matter what occupation the bully has... There's quite some irony to be found when comparing different BC threads, and some people's different attitudes.) Anyway, I hereby officially pledge my pecuniar contribution to a legal fund - should a fund be started. best, bert Edit: I've written it before, but I do support copyright protection, and would normally not buy a R*r copy. However, JH needs to learn to attack peers - not everyday Janes and Joes. Buying a R*r now is out of the question.

Former Londoner, now in Stockholm, relapse bassist
BassTractor replied to bjelkeman's topic in Introductions
Hey Bjelkeman, Welcome to pratabass.co.uk! I'm sure you'll thrive here, but remember BC is GAS inducing to the n[sup]th[/sup] degree.
There is a real dearth of bass players in Stockholm apparently.
May be, but on the positive side, the few that are there are the best ever, and BC is proud to be acquainted to one besides your good self. (inside joke. sorry) Anyway, enjoy the site, its banter and its occasional exchange of info. best, bert -
bass, amp, strings
Welcome, mate, but I did not understand those words. Somehow the words did remind me of something I recognise, but I couldn't get it to fit. Maybe you can? I was thinking of "Shitloads of basses, shitloads of pedals, shitloads of heads and shitloads of cabs". Probably not related in any way though. Anyway, enjoy the site! best, bert
hi-fi amps (mostly solid-state) always seemed to state that they should not be operated without speakers connected.
Indeed, they sound better with speakers than without. Seriously though, I have not met this in my Hi-Fi years. Regular Hi-Fi amps "love" operating without speakers, as they are very lazy, and not having to deliver any Ampere is a great, relaxing state for them. best, bert

There's this rather firm (probably neoprene "rubber") foam that comes with glue on one side, and in different thicknesses. I don't know the brand name, and don't know how easy it is to get hold of, but PM me if you want to find a source for it. I know someone in Coylton (between Ayr and Cumnock) who probably has it, or I could send you a piece of it. best, bert

Bear in mind there are lots of (anti-)nodes, and during the vibrating of the string, different ones of them will be "active" / "not active" - especially during the attack phases, but not only then. As a result of this, I can't escape the feeling that some of the discussion above is missing what the alleged sweet spot is about, and is discussing with straw men. Originally, IIRC, it was never said that there's only one sweet spot, but it was said that they found a spot that served a certain purpose very well, and why it did that. If I find the article I have on it, I'll report exactly what was claimed. b, b

For people with more than 1 bass...
give a whole world of different sounds and feels that inspire me to play and not always the same thing.
Synchronicity! I was just about to start a thread asking folks about that. As a keyboardist, I'd routinely choose special sounds or different instruments during preparation, to see where the differences would lead me in my playing. So I wondered if the same goes for bassists. I guess it does then. Is this playing different things an important argument for people to keep different basses? b, b -
Demmit! "Einstein on Ice"? Whatever's wrong with "Einstein on the Beach"? It's not as if it's been done before! Oh! Seriously though, this plan might just turn out to put an undue pressure on your studies. My background is that I studied composition for many years, and from that experience, my take would be: I'd contemplate very much about what learning you can draw from each song on its own. This is the essential bit, as I think now is not the time to dream about masterpieces, but to write stuff that fits your developing as a composer. IME this developing is best served not by few elaborate works but by very varied, short and effective pieces that are set up and planned for exactly to help in that regard. Your life and your choice of course, but I've been there, dreaming about my opera masterpiece when I was 19. At any rate: good luck with whatever you choose! best, bert

Bass suitable for ~ 8 year old - suggestions please
BassTractor replied to dougal's topic in Bass Guitars
That pic screams that you made the right choice. Nothing better than when they get the instrument they lust after, and it's a good one. Love the missing sock! Congrats to boy and dad. best, bert -
I believe the point about the sweet-spot is that it's usually suggested to be a specific point relative to the part of string that's actually vibrating, which obviously changes in length depending on where you are on the fretboard.
It may have been understood like that by some, but it was never explained like that back then. Whilst there may be zillions of rather sweet or extremely sweet spots, as well as light spots and diet spots, the chosen one was chosen as a good compromise for the overall sound. Also keep in mind that fretting a string does not change the formant, present even on electrical instruments. The explanation that followed in the press releases showed that they knew exactly what they were talking about. Now, the actual value of that exact sweet spot as opposed to others, or indeed its importance altogether, is a different matter. But they were never unaware of strings being fretted and string knots moving as a result. Of course they were aware. It's basic knowledge. best, bert

For people with more than 1 bass...
BassTractor replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in General Discussion
Nope. Maybe when I get very old, but not whilst I'm averagely old. Though the idea of "one bass only" does charm me, I can't imagine having only one as long as I can survive economically with [s]several[/s] lots of them. Edit: However, I can imagine slimming down the collection. Say that I find I can't do sixers, fivers or fretlesses. Then they will have to go. In the unlikely case I can do everything on my fretless sixer, and never feel the need or wish to play any other bass, then I might consider owning only one. It's never gonna happen though. My main concern right now is whether we can bring all our gear into the nursing home and whether we'll be allowed to do prog, jazz and classical, or must comply to the majority wish of two- and three-chord music - - preferably slow and sleep inducing. best, bert -
What a fantastic outcome. Congrats! b, b

Don't mind telling, but I'm afraid it will not be too interesting, as there is little plan in it as of yet. Most gear was bought when a sudden possibility appeared, like a half price offer or a used one. Also, some of it was bought purely to get a friend started, so there's even less plan there. Orange Terror Bass - hybrid Beta Aivin BT250H - discrete Ashdown Little Bastard - valve Orange Micro Terror - hybrid (IMS) I realised too late that some are combos whilst your thread is about heads, but here goes: Harley Benton CB-110X Beta Aivin BP35 Just ask if you wanna know more. best, bert

Me, I'm sick and tired of towing, but this thread let me see the dark: Two motorhomes/campervans, filled to the rim with gear. Band logo spread over the full size of the sides - half of the logo on each motorhome. Imagine: 20 yards of logo! Motorhome 1 driven by present wife / future ex. Motorhome 2 driven by present lover / future wife. Me practising. Perfec. Seriously though, if I were to gig intensively enough, I'd always take an extra class D amp, and make sure that one of my two cabs could do the job by itself in a rut. Whilst not gigging at all, and merely attempting to learn to play the bass, I still invest in all kinds of amps. Had seven, currently have six, and will end up with one or two as soon as I understand what they do, and I know what I want. best, bert

My Little Bastard with the LB cabs sounds wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Carefully rounded off top, and far from dull. May not be the most hi-fi thing, but fits everything from Squier CV '51 P to Music Man Bongo. It's also masterful when used with a rock guitar like the Peavey Tracer II. Dunno how it would sound with a Les Paul, but expect it to be grand. As a result, I'm selling my guitar amps now. No need to keep them. Did I say I lurv it? My MAG 410/307W evo II combo IMHO sounded indifferent more than woolly to my ears. It made me enthusiastic the first days I owned it, and from there it alas went downhill. Not saying I'm right or anything - just sharing my personal experience. I liked it best with the Bongo. Did like the EQ section very much, once I got to grips with having to dial relatively much. It was very flexible. I appreciated the compressor. It was often on, in a modest setting. The sub was a funny, slow effect with my attempts at playing bass. Nice on long tones, unusable on short tones. I think the OP's impression of Ashdown knocking going on is incorrect. People have been positive AND negative about just about every brand, including Aguilar, Barefaced and Genz Benz. Even Vanderkley has received some lashing. Ashdown do very many different things, their products are often affordable, and, as far as I can understand, are rather popular. More popular = more people having an opinion. Just my thrupenny. best, bert Edit: Before I get arrested: I'm not saying the Les Paul is not a rock guitar. It is different to a Tracer though.

Anyone tried a Ashdown CL-414H? Who Can help me find a 4x10?
BassTractor replied to DanEly's topic in Amps and Cabs
I have this in my house (sorry about the crap pic)... [...] Although it's apparently called the VS212 though it looks identical to the CL range.
Ah! Thanks for posting! Now I get it. See, the LB range was succeeded by a whopping two different new ranges: The CL range is the successor of the LB range with bigger configurations. As far as I've understood, they are in a different price league than the VSs, and are built in England. However, I don't think any of them come with neodymium magnets. The VS range is or was the newish, cheaper and heavier successor of the LB range - IMS with smaller cabs. The LBs had been built in England, and spawned neodymium magnets. The VS is built in China and has trad magnets. Mind you, the LBs were a lot heavier than Ashdown claimed, so the weight difference is not that much in real life. Yeah, I'm sure the VS-212 is a great cab. Reportedly, they sound quite like the LBs - which is a good thing in my book. (Me personally, I'm not looking though, as I got hold of the very last LBs that I could find in the UK - after several sleepless nights of intense searching. I searched not for the sound but for the lack of kilos, as I have back poblems.) Indeed, a lot has changed on the Ashdown website after the update, and my uninformed impression is that some products have vanished from there that are still available. best, bert
